I had hours of fun roaming around the map in single player, but then one day I launched the game and found I had completely lost interest in the story mode. I have to say it is still one of my favourite games and I had a lot of fun with it before I quit, but I just had no desire to finish the campaign.
Positives
The open world map feels very alive and is a lot of fun to just bum around in. Driving is also a lot more fun than in previous GTA titles and feels great. The game is very cinematic so it always just looks super slick no matter what you're doing. The cut scenes are very well thought out and are also very cinematic and the voice acting is really well done for a game. The characters are some of the edgiest in video games in a while, and being able to switch between three different players was a real novelty for this type of game. Subtle touches like the way the different characters move around and what characters were in the middle of doing when switching to them were really well done.
One improvement on earlier titles in the series is the way the missions are actually integrated with the open world and the overall story. Earlier GTA games have tended to just have the player drive around completing random missions in between fooling around in the open world. In GTA V the missions are built around heists which have smaller missions that need to be completed to build up the bigger heist missions. There are also subtle ways the progress is reflected in the open world as well, such as the radio announcing news stories that relate to missions that have just been completed after assassinating someone etc.
Customisations
Compared to previous games in the series there are more limitations around customisations in the single player story mode. There are a lot of clothes and items that you can buy, but each character has a certain range of items that they can purchase, even from the same store. The outfits the characters are wearing also get changed over automatically so it's easy to lose interest in redressing the characters.
Some of those little random tasks that were in the earlier games like being able to get fat on takeaway or bulk up at the gym have also been removed. This is obviously not a major loss to the gameplay, but some of these little customisations made the earlier games more fun to muck around with. There are hobbies and interests that you can muck around with such as playing golf or tennis, but these don't really seem to have any purpose or impact on your player.
Owned items
Ultimately why I lost interest in the game was to do with the limitations around items that can be owned and purchased. For example, it is possible to buy a car, but if you drive it out of the garage and lose it, the only way to get it back is to retrieve it from a vehicle impound. If you don't go and retrieve it, you lose it for good. You can also steal cars and park them in garages, but these cars also seem to disappear without warning regularly. You can customise cars that you steal, but there is no point since it is easy to lose them without having a way to recover them. In the end you end up just having to upgrade the character's cars.
Money
Another point of frustration is the way money is acquired in the game. Outside of the main missions there are hardly any ways to actually make money. A lot of the side missions don't make you any money, so it forces you to stick to the main missions and also buy shares to make any money.
In general it seems like the single player mode forces the player into the story missions a little too much and makes it hard to care about customisations. Being in the open world feels great and is super immersive, but ultimately with a lot of the limitations around customisation and progression it's hard to really care about the story missions after a while.
