Hakita released a new weapon yesterday. So far, it's a better weapon than the original nailgun, I see more practical benefits with it and it leads to much more style potential.

The developer behind this game has applied some valuable lessons not just from DMC in encouraging fluid, stylish play, but even from Bloodborne in their approach to this game’s mechanics and encounter design. I’ve been tired for a long time of the kinds of shooters where you are constantly in cover and passively popping off shots, and recent titles like Doom Eternal and Post Void have done a great job of both shedding that passivity in their level/enemy design, and actively encouraging crazy aggression through their mechanics.

I mention Bloodborne specifically because this game does something functionally similar to its rally healing mechanic, here instead restoring lost health with no time limit based on your proximity to the enemy at the time of attack (proximity is of course more relevant to a shooter as opposed to Bloodborne which is all point-blank melee combat anyway). Also similar, it encourages direct parrying of certain telegraphed attacks, which has already given me one of the most exciting boss takedowns of recent memory. In the Soulsborne world, rally healing and a greater emphasis on parrying over blocking and dodging steered players away from safe, shield-based strategies, which ultimately created a more exciting experience. Here, it does much of the same for shooters where you now have to fight the urge to stay a safe distance away or simply dodge everything at all times—but you definitely still have to keep all of that stuff in your bag of tricks too.

Tough game so far, but really creates some fun moments and encourages cheeky stuff like blowing the floor out from under enemies and so on. The ”Chapter 0” I just completed leaves a very strong first impression. The bosses in it are solid gold stuff for a shooter, probably even better than those in Doom Eternal. Also, I’m playing on a controller and it’s working flawlessly once I turned up the look sensitivity to max, so if you’re also into that, give it a shot.

I wanted to make a video for Ultrakill, so I played through everything twice. Both recordings of which failed. First playthrough had no audio because Shadowplay is stupid and the second one stopped because my hard drive was full so I only had 3 minutes of footage. FML. >_<
