I wrote a lengthy review for this but then I tore it up.

Look, I don't have any insightful to say about this game because I decided to "turn off" my critical brain for it.
I just wanted to enjoy the game without thinking about what it says about our society. That's why I'm not writing an essay about how taxes —something not inherently bad— can be used as a tool to opress the poor and the... NO, WAIT, STOP!
This was a fun, light-hearted top-down Zelda-inspired game with a cutesy aesthetic, a meme-based plot and inventive gameplay and puzzle mechanics. Some of the puzzles and boss battles toward the end of the game were challenging as well. My only complaint is that the game felt too short - I would’ve liked to see the puzzles, dungeons and boss battles developed even further if the game had lasted for more than a few hours.
I got this game because it was on sale and looked super cute. I hadn't looked up any reviews at all. I expected to be playing as a little turnip trying to avoid paying his taxes. What I got was so much better!
The graphics are nice and vibrant. It's a little pixel game with the cutest artwork and animations. So I was LAUGHING in the first few minutes. The humour here is great (though heads up it may not be for everyone). I felt terrible for the acts I was committing, but in the end it's for the laughs and I got used to it. With the humour comes some actual strong world-building as you discover the backstory of the world little turnip boy is running amok in. There are a couple of twists in there I thoroughly enjoyed.
The gameplay itself is great! Nice blend of RPG questing & puzzles and Hack n' Slash with boss fights. I don't consider myself a great gamer but I was able to play through and beat the game in a decent amount of time. It's not a crazy long game but there's definitely enough there to get joy out of playing …

There's a full collection of items that you can get if you want to beat the game 100%, including a collection set that allows you to unlock a 'true' ending. There is even a post-game infinite dungeon royale that's unlocked after completing the main storyline, so if you enjoyed the Hack n' Slash, you can keep on going!
I totally recommend this game, though maybe do a bit of research if you have reservations about playing a not so heroic hero. It's a lot of fun!
short and entertaining, it was funny at times and i enjoyed finding the collectibles. wish there was more to the game tho, i was expecting it to be longer for some reason but i liked the jokes

This exceeded my expectations in the same way that Pikuniku did: It's a colorful, short, irreverent take on a classic genre with some collectibles, some backtracking, and the faintest hint of deeper meaning beneath its humor. Plus, it's got accessibility options! That's my jam.
It's short, it's sweet, you commit tax evasion. 2 hours playtime with 100% completion. The humor is based on internet-culture, yes, but I don't think that's a bad thing, it just makes it not everyone's cup of tea.
The gameplay is not anything complex, most of the quests are "talk to the right NPC to get an item to give to another NPC" but you know what..... I wanted a cute, funny game to decompress, and I got that.
Overall I highly recommend it!
Finished in one session in about 2 hours with 100% completion. A very charming and very cute game that stays fun the whole way. Unfortunately even with a 2 hour game, so much of the game still feels like backtracking of just running across the screen to the next area. There's also a few encounters in it that seem like it's asking for more than the very imprecise controls and combat can provide for. Still had a fun time and it made me laugh out loud several times, but the usual rules apply where there were just as many things that made me laugh out loud as there were things that made me roll my eyes completely.
Now that I'm older, tax evasion is becoming more and more enticing by the minute.
Some cute characters and lines. Mostly fetch quests and meh combat. If you need to turn your brain off for 2 hours, this is fun. But you're not missing anything if you don't play it.
Last month I played through Turnip Boy and it was fun. The humor was funny at times and terrible at others, and while the gameplay wasn't that impressive or anything, it was still good enough for me to finish the game. The game really shines when it tries to tell its own story, which sadly doesn't happen often, instead relying on other media and references to make its jokes.

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is a parody of adventure games and pop culture in general, making fun of the tropes they use and the stories they tell. The game's writing can be really clever at times, more specifically when it's trying to tell its own story, however most of the time the "jokes" it tries to make fall super flat. I think the running gags about the game itself are really fun, but the developers just can not stop with the referencial humor, with some characters only existing so they can say "Haha have you watched this popular anime? Isn't it funny when our game quotes the popular anime???"
The game itself is ok. The inventory system and items you get are a little bit clunky however …

The game itself is ok. The inventory system and items you get are a little bit clunky however they're not game-breakingly bad or anything, so you get used to them quickly. The bosses are actually pretty fun though, and I was incredibly surprised when I finished the story and was met with the fact that the post-game was an entire god-damned rogue-lite dungeon within turnip boy, so that's cool for people who want more of the game.

Here's a little problem I have with video games lately: It feels like most videogames don't actually know what kind of game they want to be. Halfway through the game, you enter a section where they drop the silly act and reveal that

The presentation is actually pretty great. While the pixel art is good enough, I especially really liked the artwork they used for close-ups and cutscenes. The ending song is also super memorable.
In conclusion: While the game is fun, I can't help but feel like it could be so, so much better. The game had a lot of potential for a fun story but decided to throw it away in favor of pop culture references. The game is super short though, so even if the gameplay is not the greatest thing ever, it's still worth powering through it just to watch the story unfold. 6/10
In a society built by sentient fruits and vegetables (with animals still being wild), you get thrust into running errands for the mayor, who evicted you for... surprise, evading taxes!
In this short and condensed story, you'll deal with memorable, huge cast and their issues, rip apart notes, fight corrupted animal bosses and get a glimpse of your backstory at the end.
While the character designs are cute and imaginary with tons of dialogues within the game's length, the main plot is less engaging than the stories behind certain characters and locations that I come across doing quests for. Playing with gamepad makes for the best experience because I haven't found any hotkeys for switching between inventory items on keyboard, which forces me to resort to opening the menu and switching manually every time.
Ultimately, for a game that excels in the cutey charm/thug method contrast, 12,49€ for a game that last a couple of hours seems pricey for now. Hopefully, the price will justify itself with continued content updates, since seeing the free Sunset Station DLC put into place. I personally can't recommend it to everyone, but give it a try and see if it's your cupcake.
Opening Act: 3/10
Mayor drops in, and you owe money!!!
Gameplay Loop: 6/10
Navigate the Zelda (NES style) navigation map & gameplay. However compared to the original Zelda there are tons of NPCs and relatively good clues on how to proceed with the game. That being said you will have to cycle through several bosses and dungeons to get to the ending. They are pretty enjoyable and straight forward.
Hand and Eye Friendliness: 8/10
The game looks good and has no difficult visual scenes at all. Joystick and button holding are not strenuous. In addition the game is relatively short. There is a bit of timing coordination but overall its very hand friendly. For those struggling with any elements the settings can be made to be easier in the main menu as well!
Story: 6/10
The story is somewhat light, but what is there all fits together in the world and it resonates in a straightforward way with the player that is Memorable.
Sound: 7/10
A surprising highlight is a few catchy music tunes. They don’t hold up to long gameplay but the gameplay sessions here are short so it works well.
Overall Experience: 6/10 = Recommended (Worth the time) …

It’s an enjoyable game, and there is also some extras as well as multiple endings. Overall it can be beaten in 1-3 hours, and takes a bit longer to complete all the content. I think if you buy & spend some time playing this game you’ll think it’s memorable and funny & a good experience.
Rating: 6.3/10
Pros:
Cute artstyle
Quirky cute humour
Simple to learn mechanics
Sound plot though simple
Lots of variety in characters personaitys
Amusing side quests and hidden features
After completion content (Though I got bored of doing it after an hour)
Perfect amounts of mechanics for the length of game to keep it fresh while also using them to their potential for the puzzles
Puzzles were good as they took a bit of thought whilst they designed the levels to hint at what needs to do discretely very well
Negatives:
Conclusion:
Even though the postives outweigh the negative so much the game was consistentely just pretty good with a couple hiccups. I never reached a high particular immersion or high …

This was a fun, cute, and silly game. It's super short, so it's a good thing I got it for free. Story was a bit darker than I was expecting, it actually made me a bit sad. Usually not a fan of referential humor, but it works for this game. I guess it helps that the game is so short so the writing doesn't get stale.
This is free in the Epic store this week:

Next week we get Golden Light.
I've been playing this on the Switch & love how silly it is, a lot of fun. My main issues are the animation that plays before the big bosses (Liz & Onion) are cute the first time but get beyond annoying when you've died several times and have to rewatch it every time. I also wish you could take items out of your hand rotation so you don't have to click through so many options when they aren't all necessary.
Still thoroughly enjoyed the game & wish it went on a little longer.
It's a 2-3 hour game that's really fun to play if you are in the mood for a light-hearted game that doesn't take itself very seriously.
It is a little bit meta but honestly quite fun game.
pretty darn cute lil game, based off zelda top down style and it's got a jojo reference, very much enjoyed the subtly dark theme throughout the game that just gets darker and darker as it progresses
gets a lil meta if you're into that, brings up something about 2020 (no spoilers) but overall extremely enjoyable 4/5 for sure
