Fun Co-op, Classic Xbox Live Arcade Game

There are very few Xbox Live Arcade games from the 360 era that I fondly remember these day aside from Castle Crashers. Brief Final Thoughts

I love the art style in this game, what looks like quite a basic layout brims with personality. I played this with friends and had a blast overall, some great humour meshed with tight controls and plenty of boss fights which I always welcome. The awesome soundtrack is one that will be etched into my brain for the rest of …

I picked this back up last weekend (solo) while hanging out with friends who were doing their D&D campaign. Played a bit last night, and I feel like I'm probably gonna get sucked into this for a while again, at least until I get burnt out/frustrated.

I played the shit out of this game with friends in high school, and it really is, unfortunately, one of those games that just isn't as good when you play solo. It's still enjoyable in a lot of the same ways, but it's much more of a slog. When I first bought the remaster, I solo'd as the Pink Knight. I had to grind a ton to get through the game on my own. All of the enemies (including bosses) have the same stats (as far as I can tell) as when you play multiplayer, so you're trying to do the job of two-four people on your own because nothing is scaled down to a solo character's abilities. This means a looooot of replaying levels, which gets old. I think my level was somewhere in the 40s or 50s with the Pink Knight, whereas you can easily beat the game in the mid-20s if you're playing as a group.

The exp in this game is also something I wish they'd fixed with the remaster. 1 hit = 1xp. I enjoy the magic, so essentially, I put a lot of points into magic and not into strength, and do a lot of physical attacking throughout the game to get in more hits and use magic whenever. Low strength = more hits to kill stuff = more exp. This is frustrating because you basically have to use more of the skill that you don't put points into in order to level (meaning you could do the opposite of what I do and put more into strength and use weak magic). I always use the giraffe animal orb to get extra exp as well, and it's still slow. Take multiple people playing into account and you then have even less exp to go around because the number of enemies and the number of hits that they take to kill is the same. It's just a frustrating system that was probably put into place to limit people being dicks when playing online, but ended up just punishing the couch co-op and solo players (who are probably the majority).

I do love the variety of characters, but there are many I've always wanted to use that require me to beat the game with one or more other characters first, and I usually get burnt out before I finish a playthrough, or immediately after. I do wish they had made a number of changes to the remaster regarding these aspects of the game, because otherwise, it's a cozy favorite to go back to

The game is a tad on the short side and not particularly challenging but it's a rip-roaring good time for the couple of hours it will take you and some friends to get through it. Also, there's tons of characters and weapons to unlock if you want to wring even more entertainment out of it. This game is also the first "digital only" game I ever played and along with games like Braid and Geometry Wars, signaled a new era of gaming where independent developers could get smaller games into the hands of more people using the POWER OF THE INTERNET! WOW! Cool stuff.

Not fun

Bosses with health pools that require 20 minutes of button mashing to kill. What a brilliant and professional game idea.

Not.

Uninteresting slog

Castle Crashers is a boring simplstic brawler that lacks enemy variety. After 15-20 minutes of pressing A/W/S near the exact same enemies over and over again i just wanted it to be over. What's worse is that you may accidentally click the wrong game in the menu and end up playing some shitty dodging game instead - without any explanation …

Enjoyable but repetitive.

The game is rather enjoyable and has fun mechanics, however the gameplay does not change much throughout and can feel a bit repetitive.

Supports couch co-op which is great when friends are around, and that fun within that company can help push past the repetitive feeling.

Good game, smashing gives a lot of fun, graphics drawn in nice, humoristic way, but stupid "won't save your progress after each stage" system made me drop this game... so only 3/5 instead of 4/5.

Really nice 2D side-scrolling RPG smashing game. The Co-op mode is multiplying the gameplay experience and gives you tons of funny moments. The cartoon graphic is highlighting the humor of this game. I recommend it more for multiplayer, but single play gives funny time and challenges battles as well.
