it's kind of hard to ignore the misogyny. I tried to give the benefit of the doubt, but it's pretty heavily woven into the game that every last member of the dev team firmly sees women as objects. I don't mean because there are no female warriors. That's a choice that does say something but fine I could forgive the narrow view, but the fact that women in this universe at all are solely brothel girls, witches or mothers that are victims. This could have been salvaged partly with competent and sinister female villains not just one of many unremarkable monsters. If the village girl npc had the potential to be vengeful figure. If any of the positions of even small local governing power were held by women. even a small percentage of them. But no. Just victims and whores. When women are so much as spoken of in dialogue it's just about being lustful or about a family that fell apart, a woman that was stolen. Just an object.
What really drives it home is that the strongest influence on the writing and world building in this game was obviously Glen Cook's the Black Company. A series with five prominent women who wield considerable power and influence and another three that are warriors and valued parts of a company of mostly men. So this was deliberately weeded out as a reflection of the devs views. on their website they address the question of why no female warriors and say they would have had to rework the writing and it just wasn't a priority. Hard to ignore that this is what they think.
Is it still a well made game, with solid gameplay, sound design, graphics and writing? yes. Is that enough to overlook and ignore this glaring flaw? maybe. It's not as if the devs are being elected to any position of power. Adding things like this to the culture doesn't help. It does contribute to a view of women as objects being continued and we certainly have enough of that.
Fortunate there are mods to correct this mistake, among other issues with this very limited game. I praise the things that are solid about it. There is a good gameplay foundation here, but I hope in the future the dev team expands their writing and lore team before producing a sequel.
