We played this game with my girlfriend and had a blast. You go through various islands and archipelagos and need to mark things on a map using only rudimentary tools like step counting and a compass (the tool for drawing circles, not the instrument that points North... although eventually you also get that type of compass). So you need to rely on figuring out landmarks, doing triangulation and worrying about sightlines.
As the game progresses maps start getting bigger but you also get more tools. Like the aforementioned "compass of the second kind" or magic telescope that can measure distances. You also get the ability to build wooden platforms with a clunky control scheme and a Breath of the Wild-style glider that also controls pretty badly. There are also platforming challenges that are kind of annoying and have literally no reward.
But those things aside, the core gameplay is novel and fun. When you mark each thing you get a very satisfying confirmation that tells you how far off you were. Seeing that counter go to zero is immensely satisfying.
I strongly recommend anyone who secretly wants to buy a theodolite.
