The parry system really reveals weaknesses in Insomniacs enemy targeting. Too often during combat I'll attempt to parry an incoming attack, only to have the combat camera spin and target another enemy, causing the parry to fail. This is also evidenced by how often finishers land on the wrong target because the combat camera is off the mark, but I …

Is Insomniac secretly auditioning to make a Superman game? There sure is a lot of flying around for a game about the web-slinger!

I heard that fast travel was instantaneous but I was having a hard time figuring out how to actually do it because I couldn’t see any fast travel icons in the map. And then I realized I can fast travel to any spot I place my cursor on, without any waiting through load times. Impressive coding Insomniac, very impressive. I …

Things I didn’t know Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 needed: attack parrying.

Squeezing through tight space animations? A mirror positioning puzzle? Is Sony so desperate for a single homogenized AAA game play experience that even Insomniac games have to start emulating the design approach that every other Sony Studio follows? I want to play an Insomniac game, not Uncharted or God of War.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is starting to remind me of another big, popular and successful game this year, TotK, in so far as both games take a very solid base in the form of a first game and heap a ton of extras on top of that base. Like TotK, this game manages to carry the weight of all that excess competently, enough to win the affection of enough people to be considered a potential shoe-in for GOTY by its fans. Like TotK, I can appreciate that perspective, and understand while people enjoy both games. Heck, I enjoyed TotK and am enjoying this. But like ToTK I think Insomniac’s Spider-Man was best when it was smaller, tighter and not striving to grow the experience so much that it overflows with an abundance of superfluous elements.

This game introduces or reintroduces like forty-two different combat mechanics, everything from combos to gadgets, within the first five minutes. And then it layers on bonus XP for specific actions by encouraging you to use them. But they ask you to do this by describing them by name.

Insomniac, buddy, I know how to execute everything you just threw at me, but if you think I’m going to remember what you named them, you’ve got another thing coming. Web-strike? Bounce enemies? You think I know which of my six hundred moves is the one that specifically bounces enemies? Give me a break.

A part of me is excited to back in the world of Spider-Man, but part of me already finds all the side content and busy work to be exactly that, busy work. It's hard to come from a game like BG3, where every side quest feels consequential, to a game where I feel like I'm doing very specific types …

So Spidey isn't a cop anymore, but he is setting up a city wide "opt-in" surveillance network 😬 🤦🏽

I love Insomniac but their critical thinking is not always the strongest.

What is with American studios (film, games, even TV) with hiring American actors to do poor Slavic accents instead of hiring actual actors of Slavic origin? Starfield got flack for Bethesda's usual choice of hiring non-Irish actors to do bad Irish accents, so where are the people poking fun at Kraven's awful accent in this game? It might actually be …

Starfield got flack for Bethesda's usual choice of hiring non-Irish actors to do bad Irish accents, so where are the people poking fun at Kraven's awful accent in this game? It might actually be worse than Matt Mercer's Minsc in BG3, but at least Mercer was a bit of a cameo to give fans of Critical Role a nod, so I tolerated it. Kraven is making my ears bleed.

Loved the gameplay, loved the story, loved everything about the game except that it was a glitchy mess. I think that’s to be expected with a brand new release but I can’t even count the number of times I had to restart a checkpoint or close out the game entirely to work around major glitches.

Absolutely loved it. A few of the story points felt a tiny bit rushed, and I did run into a handful of glitches, but the story points that blew me away far outweighed the few that didn't, and the absolute joy I constantly felt during combat and traversal made up for the couple times I had to save and reload to fix a quest not proccing. Its in a weird situation where the improvements to basic gameplay make it more exciting and harder to go back to Spider-Man 1 but I think that one might be the better game? Still my current GOTY.
