Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is an action-adventure game and a sequel to the 2010 game, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and the 35th installment on the Castlevania franchise. The game was developed by MercurySteam and published by Konami. This is MercurySteam's last contribution to the franchise. The story is set in both medieval and modern worlds. As in the previous game, the player controls Gabriel Belmont, now known as Dracula, as he fights through an open world. During the game's opening sequence the player is able to control Dracula while he still possesses all his powers as well as all of his weapons. Dracula's main weapon is his Blood Whip, a weapon that is comparable to the Combat Cross from the original Lords of Shadow. Replacing the magic system from the previous game are the Void Sword and the Chaos Claws. The Void Sword can replenish Dracula's health when used while the Chaos Claws can be used to break through enemy defenses and deliver powerful attacks. The story mode in Lords of Shadow 2 has been stated to be far longer than the previous one. The game is mainly an open world allowing the player to choose what route to take. This game also features a movable camera, something that was not available in the first Lords of Shadow game. Read less

The second Lords of Shadow entry is an action-adventure game that mixes hack-and-slash combat with exploration and cinematic storytelling. The second Lords of Shadow entry is an action-adventure game that mixes hack-and-slash combat with exploration and cinematic storytelling. The MC now is, surprisingly, Dracula himself, as he wields the Blood Whip, Void Sword, and Chaos Claws in a fluid, combo-heavy system that’s widely considered the game’s strongest feature. Boss battles are creative and intense, and the gothic castle environments show impressive detail.

Unfortunately, the game struggles with pacing and structure. The modern-day city environments are visually bland compared to the atmospheric castle, and forced stealth sections often feel awkward and unnecessary. The story is unfocused and sometimes incoherent, despite the previous title having a very simplistic tale in comparison, they decided to create a more complex one this time. Exploration feels limited, and repetitive encounters dilute the impact of the otherwise enjoyable combat.

The result is a game with strong technical execution and some genuinely thrilling moments, but one that is weighed down by uneven design choices and a lack of narrative clarity. Fans of the first Lords of Shadow may find moments to enjoy here, but many will see it as a step down from its predecessor, though I still enjoyed this one greatly. I highly recommend playing the DLC too, which the MC is Alucard, it is a must-play for any Castlevania fan, sometimes it feels even better than the base game, since you can transform and the puzzles are more comprehensive.

I always like the Castlevania setting for video games. This one isn't quite as good as original Lords of Shadow. The modern time period feels a little odd and too many times I got stuck on a puzzle, navigation, or boss that I couldn't figure out how to get past until I look at a walkthrough. This Castlevania focuses less on the exploration and more on the boss battles. The bosses are Satan's acolytes and each one has a cool and creepy model. The music is great, particularly the theme song.

A bigger, more detailed, more dynamic game with a varied combat system and improved graphics than in the previous part. But the biggest and most decisive drawback of Lords of Shadow 2 compared to the first part is the weaker story and plot.
