After a decade and a half of playing Burnout: Paradise on and off I decided to sit down, start from the from the beginning, and finally earn my Burnout License.

Sure the graphics might show their age, but the car deformation, shattering panes of glass and slow motion scenes of destruction remain just as impressive as they did when I was 14. And hey, with the remaster you can finally restart an event. I still wish there was a way to teleport directly to the Junk Yard though.

It's a shame there hasn't been a Burnout game since. NFS doesn't do it.

Kinda fun but also pretty terrible

Playtime: 3,4 hours

Intro

Burnout Paradise is an open world racing game. You ride around a map that has starting points for races everywhere. You race against others or the clock, or you have to wreck/not get wrecked by enemies. There are also stunt races which involve boosting, jumping and rolling.

The Good

  • Racing feels good.
  • Crashes are fun.
  • You simply get reset when you crash.
  • The cars look nice for a 14 year old game.
  • Lots of different options for the time of day (timed cycles, set time).
  • You can disable specific songs from the soundtrack.

The Bad

  • Menus use Backspace instead of Escape to go back.
  • Pressing Escape doesn't bring up the main menu, you have to skip through 2-3 other menus to get there.
  • No waypoints or other navigational help.
  • Western part of the map often lacks side-routes.
  • The map is very small and you mostly drive in the eastern part too.
  • There's not a lot of content compared to something like The Crew.
  • When you start a race the starting and ending points aren't shown until the narration is almost done, making it impossible to plan a route.
  • There's only one DJ and he sucks.
  • In Marked Man races the enemy is faster without boosting even if you have a racing car and are boosting.
  • When picking a new car you have to wait several seconds for it to fall down before you can proceed.
  • When you unlock a new car you always have to get it repaired first.
  • You can't change the paint until you do that.
  • There's tons of in-game ads on billboards. Ugh.

The Ugly

  • Every single time you boot you get the "don't turn off your machine when autosaving" prompt that has to be closed. Yes, even on PC.
  • Every single time you get prompted to log in with your account and these screens take several clicks to close. Every. Single. Time.
  • Paradise City by Guns N' Roses plays when loading the menu and in the menu. Ugh.
  • This game has the worst soundtrack i've ever heard. It's terrible noisy rock songs and even worse "music" from previous games. I constantly skipped songs, there wasn't a single one i heard that i liked.
  • The game constantly has this beeping sound and i have no idea what it is for. You hear it when running out of time during a race but also every few minutes when just driving around. It's driving me insane and is the thing that made me quit playing.

Conclusion

This is fun for a few hours but there's just not a lot to it and eventually all the flaws will wear you down. You're better off playing The Crew or a proper racing game like Grid or Dirt.

One of my favorite racing games, and one of my favorite open world games. Great gameplay and a huge variety of cars and events you can participate in. Online can also be fun. My main problem with this game is that the car customization is a little lacking, but still decent.

A racer that I liked better than most. The sandbox approach felt a bit like the Grand Theft Auto games, in a positive way! It was a fun to explore the huge city and complete missions and upgrade my cars along the way.

A surprisingly fun arcade racer that doesn't get itself mixed up in some limbo between realism and arcade. This game is all about crazy jumps, nitro burns, ramming opponents off the road and causing general mayhem, while listening to some good o'le rock.

Since it holds a clear line as an arcade racer you can just play this in short bursts to release some tension and just drive like a mad man through Paradice city.
