I didn't like the gameplay. The "bossfights" were awful, as were some of the stealth sections. I guess it was nice that it was fast-paced enough that it never got really frustrating. I wanted to give it 2 stars, but I have to appreciate such an innovative indie game. I may like SUPERHOT better, but this came before and probably inspired it.
Also, the visuals and music are great. I sat there and watched the credits roll, mesmerized by the bright colors and calming but trippy music. The top-down POV is cool, and the bright colors and sound design give Hotline Miami a unique and memorable sensory experience.

The first Hotline Miami entry is a fast, violent, and stylish top-down action game that leaves a strong impression with its mix of brutal gameplay and surreal atmosphere. The MC here has no name and receives mysterious phone calls instructing him to carry out massacres against members of the Russian mob. Each mission drops you into compact levels filled with armed enemies, and the game demands split-second reactions, one wrong move and you’re dead, forcing you to rethink your approach until you master the rhythm of violence.
This is easily one of those memorable games which the gameplay is masterfully crafted, and it is good enough standout, but instead, if also delivers amazing characters, plot twists and an unforgettable mainline story. What sets the game apart is not just its challenge but its presentation. The neon-soaked visuals, drenched in 80s Miami excess, give the carnage a hypnotic flair, while the pulsating electronic soundtrack drives the action with relentless energy.
It definitely left it's mark in the gaming landscape by choosing this art-style, to the point where we got to see a lot of games inspired by this afterwards, and a lot of people thought this style came from this title, instead of it being an already existing music genre, and visual style. Beyond the bloodshed, Hotline Miami weaves in a disorienting, dreamlike narrative that constantly questions the morality of your actions and blurs the line between reality and hallucination.
The result is an experience that is as thought-provoking as it is addictive, every level feels like a puzzle of speed, precision, and experimentation, rewarding persistence with exhilarating flow. Short, sharp, and endlessly replayable, Hotline Miami has earned its status as a modern indie classic and remains one of the most influential action games of its generation. This is a must-play for people who claim to like indie titles to any extend, and there is really no excuse not to play it since this one is very affordable too.

Is this an indulgence in violent play for it's own sake, or are we to reflect on our bloodied hands as we step over the corpses we've made on our way back to the car? Is the mission brief and the interlude just a distraction between killing or is it the point?

This game is as simple as you want it to be. You will be challenged but your tools are simple and your task deceptively so. You will feel satisfaction in becoming good at bringing death. Or is it guilt? Depends on you.

Incredibly violent, but a breath of fresh air. Hotline Miami has reminded me a lot of the original top down GTA experience on the PS1, it's got a beautifully nostalgic and simple feel to it whilst managing to be refreshingly unique too. Hotline Miami is proof that you do not need fancy graphics / gameplay mechanics to create a compelling and satisfying game. It nails the core aspects of what makes video games worth playing in my opinion and in that respect it's pretty timeless.

Navigating buildings and taking people out using a variety of melee weapons and guns without getting hit once is the name of the game here. There is an overarching story too where you try and discover what the hell is going on basically and get some answers to why you're being tasked with slaughtering so many people. I went into the game completely blind and certainly wasn't expecting it to play like this but I really enjoyed strategising how to clear each room. You will die a lot but that's part of the fun! Completing a section knowing that you managed to take out every single enemy without getting hit once is all the reward you need really. You get marked on how well you perform with an overall score and even a leaderboard to check out.

The pixelated graphical style and the grungey soundtrack pair perfectly. The soundtrack is a collection of synth-wave type distorted beats from a range of artists including Mitch Murder and M|O|O|N, it reminded me a bit of the incredible Celeste soundtrack actually.
I completed it in roughly 4 hours so it's a relatively short game that certainly doesn't overstay its welcome, and I really appreciated how they handled the ending of the game. The only area of improvement I have really is that the aiming with thumbsticks and target lock on felt a bit hit and miss at times. This might be improved in the second game, i'm not sure. There is also one mission which really limits your mobility and it kinda sucks but theres guides online to get you through it in minutes.

Someone needs to say this, Hotline Miami is incredibly overhyped for what it is. The AI and aiming is unbearable, with enemies literally lasering you from half of the map from beyond where you can aim with your cursor. There are tons of other games which feel fair, fun and very challenging, prime example being Cuphead, however, Hotline Miami would be at the other end of this spectrum. Grinding through some difficult levels felt such a chore, and in all honesty, I've never been this bored and frustrated with a game during its difficult levels. Overall, it might be your cup of tea, might not be.

For the unfamiliar, this topdown shooter is a pick-up-and-play indie game that's paving the way for fast-paced action. You are a hitman carrying out over-the-phone orders and get caught up in a story that unfolds in a more complex fashion a la David Lynch flick. The gameplay sets up stages for you to overcome enemies at great odds, so it requires of you to think and act quickly, tactically and with a bit of luck. A stray shot could get you killed so the win-death ratio is less favorable for average players, decently compensated by a quick reload to maintain the flow.
I finally beat the game and to be honest, its strength lied in its immersion and weapon arsenal. On the other hand, I wasn't all that engaged with its enigmatic story and the time's worth after ridiculous amounts of trials-and-errors I put through the game got me less keen on trying out the sequel. That point can win over the praise or get gamers rage-quitting for the last time, so I can't say this game is for all shooter fans. But since the franchise has garnered great reception in general, I can only advice newcomers to try it and see how well it clicks.

I reached the conclusion of Hotline Miami uncertain of the plot of what I just played. Normally that is a bad sign for a game, but I didn't mind not understanding it. If anything, my shrug at the end fed into the games appeal.

The twitchy twin sticks puzzle action leaves you feeling bold and strong. And not because you can take hit after hit after hit. You can't. You can take one hit and then you die. That makes you feel strong. The victories are all yours. You won because you figured out the floor.
I played Katana Zero (another twitchy action puzzle room game) earlier in the year. When I closed that game out, I could put pieces of the narrative together, but the game was nudging me to explore its story more. I just kinda thought it was annoying. After 5 hours of killing mobsters in Hotline Miami, I didn't need an explanation. A shrug sent me off smiling.

Hotline Miami is definitely a unique game. It's set in an alternate version of Miami in 1989, where the unnamed protagonist is a hitman. His assignments are received through cryptic voice messages left on his telephone. Gameplay-wise, you're tasked with carrying out these assignments, which involve systematically eliminating enemies and completing any relevant objectives on each level. While this sounds straightforward, it is actually made difficult by a simple mechanic - you die from a single hit. Add the randomized behaviour of the enemies into this mix, and each level becomes a combination of planned strategy along with spur-of-the-moment recklessness. It takes a lot of attempts and a lot of deaths before a level can be cleared. To that effect, there is even a Steam achievement for dying 1000 times.
The presentation of the game is also special. There is an 80s aesthetic throughout the game, and there are wild, psychedelic colours everywhere. The game's soundtrack also ties into this, with a variety of synthwave tracks that showcase either a brooding or an aggressive vibe. The visuals also illustrate the brutality of combat in a stark manner, with the bodies strewn about each level and blood sprays everywhere. This is especially noticeable at the end of each chapter, where the background music cuts out abruptly and you have to walk back to your vehicle while having to look at the carnage you have caused. The overall aesthetic also weaves into the surrealistic main story, where the protagonist starts investigating the source of the voice messages.
To summarize, Hotline Miami is a one-of-a-kind experience. Based on my own tolerance for its unique playstyle and difficulty level, I enjoyed it enough to complete the main story and the epilogue. I don't think I will be returning to take on the high scores or to hunt for the collectibles.

It doesn't take very long to complete and isn't particularilly complex in it's design, but it manages to do several things so properly that it's experience is nearly an unmatched pleasure in the canon of gaming.
- A story that is overly simple, yet suggests much more complex narratives that the player themselves fill in with their own brainpower. Think a David Lynch movie.
- Simply the best combat a top down action game has ever had.
- The musical score is simple, thumping, could-listen-to-it-on-repeat-level-after-level awesome! It drives the action forewards with ferociousness.
- Intuite control scheme that is easy to learn and scales to player style extremely well.
- Genuinely difficult and smartly designed levels.
- Graphics are psychadelic and make you feel like your playing a game on the NES.
- Lots of masks and weapons to unlock.
- Reminds one of the original GTA and GTA 2 - minus the driving.
