I’ll still champion this as a great time, but I have to say this is just not a game I’ve really thought about in 2025. Funny how that happens, as other stuff I initially thought a little less of ended up being what stuck with me instead. I wonder if this was a difficult twist away from landing like Blue Prince did for me, a game I was similarly addicted to but had enough of well before it was over. Despite its issues, this one was a smoother ride for sure and definitely hit at the right time for me. I may not be willing to go 5/5 on it anymore, but I’d play another one of these right now for sure.

@davidh212 argues in their review that Lorelei's puzzles aren't especially interesting, and I largely agree. Outside of a novel suite of puzzles dealing with perspective, there are very few challenges here that feel fresh, with far too many substitution ciphers and rote knowledge checks. Beyond the lackluster puzzles, the story spends a long time saying very little, and the clunky interface is a consistent drag.

None of those downsides were dealbreakers for me, though, and none of them much detracted from the core joy of untangling the game's tightly interwoven web of secrets. Making progress in Lorelei means exploring the 3D maze-space of the Hotel Letztes Jahr, and piecing together a timeline of events across two centuries, and advancing a half-dozen separate longform puzzles, all at the exact same time, and the combined effect is heady stuff. Possibility unfurls around you in all directions, a flood of doors and mysteries that dares you to keep up, but there's always just enough guidance to prevent frustration from spilling over. The stark, Killer 7-inspired visuals are unimpeachably cool, the constant uptick of the "percent complete" tracker feels great, and the final challenge ties everything together in an immensely satisfying fashion. Just super charming throughout.

After playing it further, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a blend of The Witness, Professor Layton, Alan Wake II, Immortality, and Inscryption a tiny bit.

Extremely fascinating.

This month is going to kill me. I can’t quit Dragon’s Dogma II even though I’ve been playing it for a month but I do very much want to play Indika, Animal Well and Hades II. And now Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Simogo’s new game, is out tomorrow. I can’t keep up with these releases!

Sweet god, Simogo has a new game and it looks like they are going to pull a bit from their Device 6 and Year Walk roots. Those were both brilliant games and I can't wait to play a new murder mystery from one of my favourite studios!
