Had a hard time figuring out where to go most of the time, and I guess I'm just not used to the sorts of puzzles this game was going for. Ended up using a guide to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do, but even when going the right direction the game just felt bland. Didn't feel scared by the robots, mostly just annoyed. I'm surprised to see this is like a 15-hour game (would probably be 20 for me), since that seems way too long for this sort of thing.

So I never picked SOMA back up after my last update 2 years ago. Maybe I should. Kinda feeling a horror thing...

I really didn't think the "what does it mean to be human" sub-genre of sci-fi had any more left in the tank, but boy did SOMA prove me wrong. It managed to tell a fascinating story about human consciousness that provided some pretty agonizing choices (the one involving your arm near the end had me debating with myself for 15 minutes before I could do anything). Luckily the horror elements aren't nearly as terrifying as they were in Amnesia, which makes the game much easier to recommend to non-horror aficionados. Don't get me wrong, the game is plenty tense, but the game lets you know when enemies are nearby through some pretty obvious screen effects and just sprinting by the bad guys can work a majority of the time. The only thing I have to say negative, and it's not really negative so much as something I wish they had done, is the choices, while narratively impactful, don't have any meaningful gameplay consequences outside of one notable instance. That instance has you choose between keeping a robot-man alive or getting to play the next section without the enemy. It was a powerful motivator to make 'the wrong' choice and more such instances would have been greatly appreciated. Hell, I could imagine a game where you get to make horrifying decisions and not face many, or any, enemies because you have in essence become the villain. But that's just spitballing. SOMA is a hell of a game with a powerful story and easily one of my favorite of the year so far.

Really tried to like this. I'm a HUGE fan of sci-fi horror and have a soft spot for abandoned stations. The game got in the way, I feel. I got to some part where a monster is chasing you through corridors and you have to take the perfect route back. Problem is, half of this game I was walking around lost, so I have NO IDEA what the correct route back was. After dying 6 times I just ALT-F4'd. Not sure if I'll load it up again.

Soma gets the story right and carefully unfolds its narrative. You do a lot of walking, once in a while manipulating objects, and you read a bunch of notes, but that is compelling enough for me that it didn't bother me. Soma gets the story right and carefully unfolds its narrative. You do a lot of walking, once in a while manipulating objects, and you read a bunch of notes, but that is compelling enough for me that it didn't bother me. The hide-and-seek aspect of seeing the monsters gets a little old, but the atmosphere of the game is suffocating. So it's not really as scary as it could be in terms of your encounters with your threats, but the unflinching honesty of the plot and the environment still make it pretty scary. It's more interesting for the story though.
