I'm near the end of the game, but I've reached an impasse and I'm not sure what to do about it. I'm trying my damnedest to raise my characters' HP and awaken some of the strongest skills. I made sure everyone has affinity for the weapons they're using AND they have an affinity for gaining HP (some do not, for whatever reason). However, only one of my characters' HP is over 300. I read there are fights coming up where there are multiple AOE attacks that do 500+ damage. I'm getting my ass kicked by the Green Dragon (Bogsaur Marsh) and the Black Dragon (one of the oases in Shifting Sands), and even random mobs can one shot me.

Ok, I just browsed the internet for a bit and it seems like maybe I skip finding better weapons, unlocking the best skills, and beating the dragons and rare enemies in a new game plus. Supposedly some stuff carries with you in NG+, but not skills or items, which is INSANE. I might not do all the play throughs after all.

This is an interesting little game. Hamauzu's score is great as ever, the art style is gorgeous like Alliance Alive. But this one sits much closer to its SaGa roots than AA. Not much, if any, plot so far (Owen is my protagonist), allies don't add much, kind of just wandering around. The map completion mechanic is both a gift …

The map completion mechanic is both a gift and a curse. Good because it satisfies my competitionist nature, bad because it just seems unnecessary. I'm not sure how the trade mechanic works, but I just sent my first expedition. The hub town is bare bones and the shop offers nothing of worth except new maps. I'm having fun and looking forward to how it's going to pan out.

OMG I JUST read that this has an HD remaster on modern consoles! I was just thinking about how much I loved Alliance Alive, and I know a lot of people say this game is basically a cheap prototype for that, but I'm so excited to play more of something similar. Plus more of Hamauzu's gorgeous scoring. I could cry! …

I remember being excited when this was first revealed. Years later, I'm finally getting around to playing it and holy yikes does it deserve all the middling reviews it received. I wanted to like this so much but this game is so much wasted potential.

I can see why many players dropped it. Its gameplay is tedious and opaque. There's almost nothing going for it narratively. The environments are same-y and uninteresting to explore. It's a slog to get through, and my realizing the Quick Save function can be abused is the only reason I stand before you today with my sanity intact.

And I'm still only 60% of the way through? Maybe?? IDK.
