Beat on slow motion. This was a weird game with a mix of strategy, action and rpg. The story made little sense, with earth sending Godzilla and Mothra to defend against invasion. Why would they help people? Yet it seemed like earth forces were fighting them the entire time. The game started on a map with different types of tiles, and you could move 1 monster each turn while the enemy moved 1 on their turn. The goal was to reach the big city tile at the other end of the map to move to the next stage. Godzilla moved 2 spaces while Mothra moved 4, and a shoot em up stage had to be played for every tile you ended a turn on, and combat vs other monsters used the same style. The shoot em up parts could be best described as a clusterfuck of relentless enemies and projectiles. It was impossible not to take damage and much of the play was about farming health pick ups. They even stayed around and moved right as long as you could keep up with them so sometimes I could keep a nice reserve. Mothra played more like a proper shoot em …

Mothra played more like a proper shoot em up due to flight and a very basic ranged shot. The shot did not do much damage though and any hit Mothra took caused massive knockback to the point of frustration. It could also drop bombs using the power meter. Kills increased score which functioned like xp to increase max power and hp. It also seemed like there was a hidden defense stat (maybe attached to hp) since less damage was taken as the game when on. Godzilla on the other hand had to walk, punch and kick his way through the same stages. He took way more hits and was way more affected by obstacles. Punch vs kick was mostly high vs low mechanic based on the elevation of enemies, though punch was much faster. He could also duck to do a tail swipe with better range, and his power move was a breath nuke. Different enemies had to be killed by all of those moves. The most dangerous enemy by far were the fireballs, one of the very few things that could not be destroyed. Mothra could easily fly around them but Godzilla would take repeated contact damage for massive amounts. I learned to jump left to bait them to fly higher so I could safely pass under them. Other annoying enemies were dome towers that could not be reached by melee without taking damage, so I used breath. I had both characters fight the enemy monsters at first preferring Mothra but letting Godzilla solo the final map. The kraken was easy for both due to very low damage output but annoying because it liked to stun lock me in the corner. I don't know why they put such a stupid mechanic in. Who wants to completely lose control of a game until the enemy decides to stop pressing them into a corner. The other mechanical reptile thing shot fire that could hit Mothra but was still easy for both. The purple spiky thing was hard counted by Mothra because it could not hit at all when flying low. The orange crawler was tougher but not too much challenge for either. The slime creature like to spam projectiles but stopped when Godzilla got up in his face. Godzilla killed that faster but Mothra could do it with 0 damage. Then Gigan and mecha godzilla were the strongest monsters with powerful melee and ranged attacks. Mothra did better because there was a sweet spot where the ranged shots could not hit. The final boss took a few attempts because the outcome depended on how long he kept me pinned in the corner unable to do anything while my hp went down. Breath helped push them back before being pinned and I could breath far more often at higher level. Both ended up at level 16.
While this game was interesting it did have a lot of flaws. It dragged on too long clearing very samey stages and fighting the same boss monsters over and over. There was only ever 1 of each monster per map too. The strategy aspect was extremely limited. There was no clearing tiles as 1 character to make it easier for the other, or differing routes or objectives for them. Double teaming was barely effective because only 1 monster could move each turn, and the overall balance was pretty scuffed and frustrating at times. The core combat mechanics were a little fun but the game design around that was not good.

So after finishing my homework I installed Batocera in my old laptop, so I guess it´s time to finish those retro games that I couldn´t finish before. Ps: I love this game, if you´re a kaiju enthusiast then you must play this gem!!!
To celebrate the release of Godzilla vs. Kong (it was fun) I made a list of the most interesting games about the King of the Monsters.

I was really surprised to discover so many games. It has almost as many video games as movies! Anyway, you can check the article in GamerFocus (its in spanish).
