A Game I Really Shouldn't Like, But So Varied And Unique, It Got Me Anyway

Look: 8/10 Welp, finally! I figured out Fuse/ZX Spectrum emulation (playing that version instead of the Commodore 64 version, I had to merge the 2 games here on Grouvee, but the only difference is that the 64 version is titled Super Spy). What a journey that was ha. So far, it's definitely giving me TRS 80 vibes, tho I guess it's more contemporaneous with Commodore 64 enter image description here

This is given a boost for the innovative (well, not really, but certainly innovative in the middle of a text game ha) use of the 3d maze lair part. Very unique game all round ha, peculiar to be my first time playing a ZX Spectrum game :-p

Play: 8/10 Dang, I just wish there were a guide for this game cuz uh... I'm not good enough at games for this ha. This map and the clues from the 64 manual, included below, are the closest to help I got... let's see if I can do this on my own :-p enter image description here

I love this part of the Instructions, makes me so excited to play this with my brothers sometime to hopefully get further if not overcome it :-p

I love this part of the Instructions, makes me so excited to play this with my brothers sometime to hopefully get further if not overcome it :-p

Playing Super Spy The game has four parts: a) The round the world spy chase in which you aim to discover the location of Dr. Death's secret hideaway. b) Exploring Dr. Death's island to discover the entrance to his underground maze. c) The 3-D graphic maze which you must navigate yourself through to find the control room where Dr. Death has hidden the kidnapped missile. d) Breaking the code to disarm the missile and save the world. Clues are available overleaf; use only in the event of sheer frustration!

Before even playing the game, I had looked at the map, and liked how logical it was--at first I was like weird, gridlike, but then I realized it's just being logical of that you moved in the direction you moved so the screen should be there, not somehow magically across the map like in most text adventures I've played so far--especially with the sea surrounding you so that can help when you get lost (even the official Instructions clues mention that ha). (Welp, the logic of the map didn't really prove that true after all ha, it was quite illogical as per usual in text games.) As much as I like round the world gameplay, like Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego, part a felt meh. Fortunately, after part a, the game definitely gets more fun (and more straightforward). Cool to see some mixture of other genres within this.

Feel: 8/10 Very interesting. Sorta like in RPG games you start out having to make a choice, basically like your stats or equipment, tho in this case it's more like items that can be useful. This idea definitely allows for replayability since you could choose different items enter image description here

Lol "give us a second! er... 80 seconds" enter image description here

I was going to give this a 7, but just for how unique, varied, and [somewhat] fun it is I boosted it to 8. Probly not all that accurate, but meh, the game deserves to be remembered in my neverending log!

Attachment: 8/10 Despite some questionable content (e.g., the use of the word m*****s, and just tacky stuff like "mysterious oriental") which is mostly more attributable to the source material than the game, I mean after all it's 007/Bond we are talking about here, I definitely would love to see one of y'all better gamers, specifically text adventure and puzzle gamers, figure this one out. I could see this being fun to watch someone play, which is rare for early let alone text games, but this has an actual story to play, it felt real and exciting hard to explain. Despite my incompetent self ha. As far as I can tell, this is the first James Bond-inspired game, even if unofficial. That's something that makes it memorable, too. Might not be my favorite, but impressive, expansive as heck for its time, interesting, well-done, and memorable. (I was gonna edit this after actually beating the game, since I gave it another try, but alas, still just endless beaches and marshes :-p was fun to explore tho) Lol yes yes, I knoowwww, I'm "rubbish" enter image description here
