Dordogne is a narrative adventure game in which you play as Mimi, a 32-year-old woman visiting the house of her recently deceased grandmother. Dordogne is set both in the present and the past. In the present timeline, Mimi explores the rooms in her grandmother’s home. In the past timeline, you’ll help a 10-year-old Mimi explore Dordogne and complete her quests, affecting the present. Along with the puzzles that both versions of Mimi will solve, you’ll collect photos, sounds, objects and words to create Mimi’s journal – keeping young Mimi’s memories of summers spent with her grandmother in Dordogne.

Le château de ma grand-mère
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Bon.

A lovely adventure game that focuses on narration, with a lovely pictorial style, and tells the story of a woman dealing with her past, the memories of her grandmother and the summers she spent hanging out in Dordogne. I played it with Daughter, we had lots of fun with its story, we loved the fascinating scenery and It reminded me of the best Pixar stuff, the one that can really be appreciated in different ways depending on your age and experiences and always be emotional and moving. Anyway, I like this recent genre I could call “French indie games that try to be original while talking about the human condition”. Also, we finally were able to play a French game in French language!

This was a very charming and heartwarming narrative light adventure game. The art style is gorgeous and the writing/story is very well crafted and structured. I loved the relationships that were explored and felt like the ending was a wonderful way to wrap up the storylines that were being told. While some of the controls weren’t super smooth for some interactions, the puzzles were simple but effective and still fun play through. I really enjoyed being able to make your own scrapbook to capture the main character’s memories of her journey. It was short and sweet and overall a good time

The French never disappoint Oui???

Cute linear narrative game. Very short I would definitely buy it on sale. But the watercolor effects alone was just nice to immersion and get lost in. It has a great lesson in it and for that I give it a four.

Artful reminiscence
This review is for the PlayStation 5 version

Played this sweet little Indie with my 12 year old daughter. Was able to play it through in 2 sessions (following a rather frustrating glitch which forced us to restart). The artwork is stunning, it offers around 70% of the value and the story the other 30%. There is not much to the gameplay, simple point and click for the most part however the scrapbooking was a lovely creative way to deliver bespoke playthroughs. Definitely worth a play when you are in the mood for something sentimental and dreamy.

Didn't spark joy for me

Platform: Switch

Playthrough: First Playthrough

Language: English/French Voices

Finish Status: Lost Interest

Playtime: 4h

I absolutely fell in love with the visuals of this game, and it is absolutely incredible! The sound is nice too, and everything is kinda cozy and nice.

However, I had a hard time coming back to this to finish it. I'm quite intrigued by the main character's adult story and all that is interesting to see how to deal with the issue, but I don't care so much for the nostalgic flashbacks with the kid; it feels like a very childish type of gameplay.

Unfortunately, as well, the gameplay does nothing for me on the Switch. All the little things feel super awkward and unintuitive if u don't have a mouse and don't really add anything to the experience except nuisance.

Also, damn, people need to stop using mocap so aggressively, it really brings me out of the beautiful handmade art.

V1CGaming's review of Dordogne

All in all, Dordogne is a moving story, full of sincerity and kindness. The title addresses a wide range of family issues: abandonment, family crises, serious accidents in life. It also offers a universal biography that touches our hearts and soul, as much through this summer stroll as through the search for memories. Our only regret is that it only lasts 3 hours at most. Its accessibility will allow everyone to follow in Mimi's footsteps and gaze with marvel at the promises of a more indulgent world.

Merde...

Twice this year I've tried this, and twice I find myself having a hard time enjoying myself. It's not the story, the art or the acting (although I don't understand why I can't play a French game with French audio), it's the UX. I thought that the UX was poor when played with a gamepad, and initially assumed that mouse and keyboard would be better. It's not, and the gestures required to complete certain tasks feel rigid and alienating whether played with a gamepad or a mouse. I know there's a lot to like here, but I can't quite seem to reach it through the UI/UX design.

Great game, UI's a bit clunky but it's fine. I loved the art and music, sad that it's only 3 hours while some questions are answered others are left with subtle information for you to piece together, which I like but also wish the game was longer to touch more on it.

Only nitpick is I wish it didn't try to add gameplay moments which is a weird nitpick for a game, but it's the same issue I had with artful escape where the added platforming just got in the way of the games flow. Best example is a quick time event that happens toward an important part at the end, it was janky and I needed tool me right out of the moment. Luckily this games story is good and it pulled me back in, but with short games like this just lean into the storybook vibe more and don't add any unnecessary game mechanics.

Other wise I widely recommend tho keep in mind it's only 3 hours.

I'm more excited about the idea to play Dordogne than Diablo 4 and I'm ok with it.

A time and place for every game.

This is begging me to play with a keyboard and mouse, or a touch screen. The console/controller UI is clunky and detracts from what is otherwise enjoyable.
