I purchased this because I wanted a decent basketball game. I decided to try out the "My Player" playthrough, where you play as a prospective NBA player and build your career. It was fun enough and I had managed to probably play 10 games of the season in the year or so that I occasionally launched this game.
Until i realized that 2K decided that the MyPlayer playthrough only works if you connect to their servers; servers that they then shut down when the next year's full price product is listed. I decided to just simulate a WNBA season at that point and be done with this product forever. I hope they enjoy my $70. May God strike me down if I pay for their crud again.
NBA 2K23 (Next Gen) continues to set the bar for sports titles, as it plays just as smooth and realistic as ever, which is not much of a surprise at this point, as well as retains its very in-depth modes and features, while adding a few new ones. The Jordan Challenge's return is a nice addition, but MyNBA Eras is truly an outstanding mode/feature that makes this game instantly worth buying for any fan of franchise mode. The amount of depth, realism, and love put into Eras is so great to see and allows any NBA fan to accurately recreate the league from various points in NBA history, although I wish we could get even more specific with the starting years.
A common downside to 2K, as always, is the micro-transactions in other modes, which is nothing new at this point and while I don't pay a dime, I know others are forced to. A new con, though, is the new shooting meter, which definitely takes a lot of time to get used to, and I'm not quite sure why 2K changed it again. Otherwise, 2K23 definitely is another hit for easily the deepest and most polished sports game on …

I had a My Career player a while back; maybe late 2023 or early 2024. I booted the game back up a few days ago and discovered that your MyCareer requires you to connect to 2K servers. And 2k shut down the servers so I lost it entirely. Adding 2K to my list of no no companies, I'm thinking.
This is probably my favorite 2K game since I've moved to PC. 2K20-22 felt largely the same/similar with slight balance tweaks, but 2K23 on PC feels like a breath of fresh air just for feeling like it isn't the exact same. I'm going to give the studio the benefit of the doubt and assume 2K20-22 on PC feeling so similar is a combination of COVID slowing down development and them prioritizing developing the PS5/new Xbox versions over the PS4/XBOne/PC versions. Yes, sports games will largely feel the same from year to year, but typically not to that degree. 2K16 felt different from 18, which felt different from 20-22.
Quick breakdown:
+Different animations
+Being able to change your badge points on MyPlayer freely
+MyTeam got rid of needing to add contracts to players
-It takes more VC to do less. They somehow found a way to get even greedier with their money gauging.
-I haven't seen a flagrant foul yet. Strangely enough, it seems like non-existent contact will draw a shooting or personal foul.
-MyPlayer takes place on a boat again like in 2K22, let me see some different scenery. Give us the city for the next game like next-gen has.
