The reviews I read that encouraged use of a stylus seemed to always mention finger grease as the primary factor. But IMO the touch target sizes really are too small for the Switch’s screen without one, regardless of how oily your fingertips are or aren’t. And the gamepad controls just don’t cut it for me after so much time with the Wii U predecessor.
I already had a stylus lying around, but thought I’d mention in case others plan to buy and do not.

A quick PSA for this game, there are two peripherals that make it infinitely more enjoyable, first of all I highly recommend making the levels directly on the Switch in touch mode, and for that I would recommend an Ipad type Stylus, you might already have one around the house, as manufacturers have started adding them to regular pens.

The other one is to play the levels with a D-Pad, if you have a later version pro controller, you can use that, but for portable play I highly recommend the Hori D-Pad:

This one is currently on sale, I have the Zelda one and I've been playing all platformers, Metroidvanias and fighting games with it, very recommended.
