Tower of Doom is a side-scrolling arcade game featuring four different characters (cleric, dwarf, elf, fighter) fighting iconic Dungeons & Dragons monsters. Bosses include a troll that regenerates unless burned, a large black dragon, the dreaded Shadow Elf (Mystara's equivalent of the drow), a beholder, the optional superboss Flamewing (a great wyrm red dragon) and the final boss Deimos (an archlich). At points in the game the players are presented with a choice of paths to take to continue progress. Each path goes to a different area, and it is impossible to visit every area in a single play. The gameplay is more technical than the average on beat'em up games. In addition to the usual basic attacks and jumping it includes blocking, strong attacks, turning attacks, dashing attacks, crouching and evading. It also requires the use of careful tactics, as most enemies have the same abilities as the heroes and can out-range them, too. Daggers, hammers, arrows and burning oils can be used as throwing weapons, and many enemies have similar weapons. Spells can be used by means of magical rings or by the two playable spellcasters (a cleric and an elf). Less

Welcome to Dungeons and Dragons!
This review is for the Arcade version

This is very similar to the other DnD title: Shadow Over Mystara. They re-use many of the same assets including bosses and enemies. The main difference over the versions I played was the inclusion of 4-player co-op (the other arcade was only 2 player) and the stripped down UI which I think is a good thing. It's still clunky switching between spells and items but at least the screen is slightly less noisy. It can still be frustratingly hard to hit enemies with items and spells. Aiming requires precision which is hard to accomplish with the lack of depth of field in the 2.5D style graphics.

If you can get over the jank it can still be a ton of pulpy fun and is great with 3 friends. The game is certainly designed to kill you. Almost every optional side room was riddled with traps making veering off the main path almost always the wrong move. There was also a weird translation issue with the version I played where the optional Red Dragon spoke in Spanish. This ended up being pretty funny so I'm not complaining.

Tower of- DAMN! I RAN OUT OF QUARTERS!

tower of doom is a decent game, by which I mean it would be great if it wasn't limited by the 'let's cheat 'em outta their quarters' mentality all arcade Beat Em' Up games MUST follow to a t. That aside, it is pretty good by old licensed game standards, and the final fight against Deimos the archlich was really interesting, plus ToD also has a superboss Flamewing (terrible name for a dragon, by the way.) for players that want more of a challenge (although, the game is pretty challenging already). Overall, ToD is definitely worth playing for old school D&D (or a nu-skool D&D player like me) fans that want a D&D game with more action. (I'll give it a 7/10, or a good and a half)

I'm just playing this now, I don't know why my dwarf keeps screaming FART SPAWN over and over, or why this drow/shadow elf can teleport and is a fighter, but this game is ok I guess.
