When the “99” thing exploded I wansn’t using Nintendo Online so I missed it but last year I finally subscribed it and I had to try. Well, Tetris 99 si fucking addictive. Getting into it is quite easy, because, well, it’s Tetris, and the abyss opens up. Easy to play, even easier to play it again without even realizing you started a new match, and you get very quickly to that liminal zone where you convince yourself one day you’ll be able to win (and you will not). I managed once to get into the top 5 and that was enough for me. I’m satisfied. But still, every once in a while I play a couple of matches.

Oh, I also tried F-Zero 99, which has got a completely different first impact: tutorials, long explanations, limits, rules, tests, so fucking boring. I immediately lost interest, but I’m sure it’s me, not him.

I have barely played games in the last... eh, 6 months? The only game I've booted is this eternal gem. Hope you never die, dear F-Zero 99

My word F Zero 99 is a lot of fun. I find the 99 series of games they've been putting out very hit and miss. But this one nails it.

Pacman 99 is probably the one I've liked least. I wish they'd bring back Mario 35.

Best battle royale ever made, maybe.

I'm gonna give it 5 stars because the fact that's the only game I've played in the last few months and I keep on going speaks about itself.

The only racing game that actually gives you the feeling of "oh fuck I'm so fucking fast!"

New classic mode just came up and it's (apparently) just like SNES but with 20 players. It will definitely be a Stingray fest. Good for me as I was actually playing with the Stingray.

Anyone else still playing this? I believe this game fits incredibly well into my "competitive but 5 minutes please" category, hope it doesn't die soon, although unlikely, considering that most lobbies are half filled with CPUs

I really like the new tracks added in the latest update - Red Canyon is really fun. They make a bit painfully obvious when to use the super boost however. And it seems the meta shifted from the Fox to the Goose? Seeing it everywhere and still no one playing the Stingray. Way more Blue Falcons as well.

Earlier today, this finally happened:

I asked my supervisor if this could be a sign of me finally nailing my thesis. "Lol what? -he replied- You better start writing".

Enjoyable little diversion. I love that Nintendo is experimenting with this and other 99 player ideas. Though,I played a half dozen times and got my fill with no need to do it again.

F-Zero 99 hits you with two doses of nostalgia straight out the gate. As soon as you fire it up you get the first dose from those familiar visuals and sounds. Then the second dose hits after a few races when you realize that this reminds you of the fun Death Race mode from F-Zero X. However, despite this healthy hit of nostalgia the game also feels fresh. F-Zero 99 may not be the F-Zero many were hoping for but it’s still a really good game.

F-Zero 99 plays how you would expect. You need to learn those tracks, know when to back off the acceleration, when to slide and when to boost. You need to time those spins because you can’t spam it. You need to nail those corners and keep that speed up. You have some control over the vehicles flight and landing too. It’s the same fast, slick racing you remember that rewards skill and practice. Only now this has been combined with the chaos and a little strategy of having 99 racers pushing hard for top spot.

At times things can be an absolute mess as you get smashed around the track by all the other racers and the tricky course itself. It sucks to receive a good bump and then get caught up in a shit storm which drops you back many places. It sucks to blow up just before the finish. But god damn do those top 10 finishes feel good. Weaving your way through the chaos and picking up places is rewarding. So is delivering your own good bump or getting a KO. KOs also get you a health increase. There’s also that bit of strategy I mentioned. You need to manage your health with boosting as it’s the same bar. You need to collect the little super sparks and hit golden vehicles to fill a meter to get that skyway, which means not always driving on the fastest or safest line. Choosing when to activate that skyway, so you can safely cruise above the competition, is important too as you can skip by the most chaotic parts of the track. Another important thing to consider is when to hang back a bit or when to push hard or when to be defensive. The whole thing is just good, satisfying fun, even when things haven’t gone your way. It has that very strong ‘just one more go’ energy.

Hopefully this game continues to exist with good support because I can see myself having at least a few races almost every time I turn on my Switch for a long time. I am also hopeful that this may lead to Nintendo finally giving us an F-Zero GX remaster or remake or a totally new game in this deserving series. My only real issues are it needs more content and Nintendo is going to have to find a way to keep it fresh so people keep coming back. If you can access F-Zero 99 there is no reason not to try it.

8.2/10 (for now)

Switched to the stingray and I definitely feel more competitive on my good races. My bad races suck amazingly though, but I believe that's a skill issue. Still winless but hoping to change that at some point before they take the game out completely.

F-Zero is a twitchy racing game where you need to respond to hazards, boosts, turns, and jumps with precision. F-Zero 99 is a twitchy racing game where you can't respond to hazards, boosts, turns, and jumps with precision unless you know the topography of the track. So go to practice mode until you can get through the track without hitting walls while hitting the boosts and jumps. Not only have I "git gud", I also am having a blast!

*It was my day off! Gimme a break!

Let’s get some real discussion going. In the wake of Nintendo’s latest attempt to convert an old classic into multiplayer mayhem, the important question is simple: do battle royale games suck or is this game just bad?

Please provide you answer on a short essay format and cite all sources using Chicago or MLA 6.

The more I play it, the more nuances I start to find. I'm kind of digging the economy of when to go to the sky, or the balances between hitting turbo and dying.

And the sound track is as good as I remembered

I only played the default mode but did enough to get an overall impression of the game. It checks a lot of the boxes of the battle royale format, more than it initially appeared to me, but the moment-to-moment gameplay can feel like a bit of a mess crammed into tracks that were never designed for it. I’d say overall it fails to really match the highs of the best battle royale games in terms of tension, meaningful small skirmishes, and decision-making. Some mechanics just don’t go far enough, like only up to 5 or so people at the back of the pack getting cut from each lap. The rival mechanic which assigns you 4 similarly-ranked racers who you’ll be compared against to determine rank changes is a good idea, but I just don’t perceive that they’re even there in the mob of similar-looking vehicles slamming into each other. Killing people to recover your meter is a good idea but with such limited ways to do it, it doesn’t feel that satisfying to me. I do like what they did visually in making a version of original F-Zero that looks this sharp on modern TVs without losing the original aesthetic. I just come away from this feeling like it’s a decent novelty that I feel little need to return to again.

Gave it a shot.

Way too crazy and chaotic. I love arcade style racers like Out Run and the Cruisin' series, and I love F-Zero, but this is just too much.

Seems very luck based, and you are likely stuck wherever you start the race.

This isn't the F-Zero we wanted, Nintendo. Do better.
