I thought maybe my love for Persona and its characters would help balance out my hate for Etrian Odyssey. I was wrong. Map making is cool, but the battle system is just too much of a drag. The floor with about 20 FOEs just destroyed my motivation.

Beat on loan from my coworker using her DS. I absolutely loved this game and thoroughly enjoyed the entirety of it. Having not played 3 or 4 (and I still don't have them) I went with the blue haired guy from 3 because he looked cooler. I believe my party was Mitsune front and center (she is so hot, I would follow her anywhere!), some jock guy, robot girl in the back and maybe a white mage girl. I honestly only remember the 2 protagonists, robot girl and Mitsune; the other characters were interesting enough at the time but I can't remember them now. I may have put the protagonist from 4 in the party but I really can't remember (and don't have the save file to check).

I started off on Hard and the 1st dungeon was brutal. Eventually I learned that difficulty level only lowers xp and money gain without any kind of trade off reward. What!? Ok Easy it is then. I like challenge but NOT tediousness. I mastered the combat system pretty early and went back to kill FOEs in the 1st dungeon not long after completing it. From then on I could beat the FOEs and not fuss about the puzzles to avoid them, but the fights were intense and resource draining. I really enjoyed the system of exploiting weaknesses making the next magic cost no mana combined with the partial auto hp and mp restore after combat. It made combat highly tactical and rewarding while allowing a great balance around extended dungeon crawling with limited resources. I tend to not like crossover games because of nonsense plots and settings, but the characterization in this game is amazing. The story itself is decent while the characters and their interactions steal the show, despite there being way more than can fit in the party; a pet peeve of mine. I look forward to playing 3 and 4 to get to know the characters again.

Would definitely buy and play again if/when I get a 3DS. Gave it 8.0/10, might be worth up to 8.5.

I'm having trouble with the Guardian Machine after Inaba Pride Exhibit.

I'll get it eventually..... I'll get it!

Had to go with the Persona 4 protagonist, since the game does not let you play as the female Persona 3 protagonist from P3P. That and the inability to run around the school talking to people are my only complaints so far.

I don't really like dungeon crawlers, but if any series can get me to play and enjoy one, it's Persona. This game is great.

Like other Persona games, the soundtrack is pretty sweet. The main battle music has been stuck in my head all morning.
