Diverse puzzle game to play in bursts
Artistic Value: The graphics are nothing to write home about and some of them even feel "flat". The overall visual style feels generic and uninspired. Artistic Value: The graphics are nothing to write home about and some of them even feel "flat". The overall visual style feels generic and uninspired. The music is good although a bit repetitive, what I really like are the sound effects. Jumping and grabbing items has that "hump" or feedback of doing something. The ambience is lugubrious and cartoonish, which feels like a 90s show. Being a platforming puzzle game, it doesn't need anything else. Rating = 5/10 for average.
Gameplay: Here is where Adventures of Shuggy shines. There are many different mechanics which are introduced throughout the whole game and all of them are very fun, I specially liked the controlling of time and dealing with your "shadows". The physics are well designed even if sometimes Shuggy's inertia might frustrate you. Controls are simple and easy to use, because it doesn't get overly complicated since the mix of different mechanics/powers is uncommon; the difficulty comes from the puzzle design itself. The level of difficulty is great because there is a huge number of rooms/puzzles ranging from the ridiculously easy to the frustratingly hard; I personally found the difficulty slope to be perfect throughout the game. There is also a number of multiplayer levels that I very much enjoyed. Even though the user interface is great most of the time, in certain rooms the key items for some mechanics blend in with the scenery. Also I did experience a couple of crashes. Rating = 8/10 for superb.
Fun Factor: There is some replay value in this game for those interesting in beating their own times. The mechanics used in this game are not exactly original, but since the developers decided to put a lot of them, it doesn't get repetitive. The game is great to play in bursts of 30 minutes since you can make progress quickly, but it's not the kind of game that you can play for hours because it might get boring after a while. Rating = 5/10 for average.
