Goated Toad 'em up

This was one my favorite games as a kid. Me and my brother used to rent it from Block Buster until we eventually got a copy used, I think as a hand-me-down from a neighbor who got an N64. I don't think I ever got passed the second level, but always enjoyed it.

Lately I've been trying to beat it on my RG-Arc emulation handheld when I can't sleep and it's been kicking my ass, but some save state practice helped me get towards the end of the game. I surprised myself on a flight the other day and ended up 1cc the entire thing. Sadly I had no WiFi so I didn't get the retroachievement 😅
I know this is partially nostalgia goggles but I genuinely think this is a great game. Unlike standard beat 'em ups, there's a lot of variety in the gameplay and the combat is surprisingly deep. The music slaps, the graphics work great, despite being a bit simple for '94, and the game is challenging but beatable.
Parts of the game feel unfair, but you eventually learn tricks to navigate all these issues (except for the shmup level which basically requires a turbo button). There is a surprising amount of depth for a combat system with just a punch and a jump button.
I highly recommend this if you like beat em ups! I haven't played the other Battletoads games but this one is apparently easier. I quickly tried the NES port and that is really impressive for the hardware. It's essentially the same core gameplay as the SNES and Genesis games.
