not as phenomenal as i thought it would be.* was hoping for a full on campaign/story mode of some sorts that slowly progresses through each different retro game theme and incorporates unique elements based on said games -- not a bunch of small game modes that are each themed after a retro title (mostly aesthetically). i mean, the main endless mode goes through different retro themes depending on how many lines you've cleared. but it's just music and visual, and there's a point at which the difficulty stops raising meaningfully. since the speed is imperceptible, the game turns into "slide the tetromino in a decent position while it's already at the landing spot" with a lot of time to maneuver -- they could've at least lowered the maneuvering time progressively. but i get that this is also how modern tetris works(? been playing more nes tetris lately)

anyway, im rambling. im glad i have this game finally just for the sake of it (tetris is still tetris), and some of the game modes are interesting enough for me to maybe revisit. -- i consider level 5 CPU on "Push" actually impossible though

* and tbf, i knew literally nothing about this game except the box art and a few screenshots, up until now. so literally everything i've said here is based on 15 years of mindlessly imagining how this is probably the best tetris ever LOL

Tetris DS is another entry in the wonderful Tetris series, this one including a few new clever modes to spice things up. To be honest I didn't really love any of the new modes, but they make for an interesting change of pace at least. This game is for Nintendo fans, so there's a Mario-themed mode, a Zelda-themed mode, a Metroid-themed mode, etc. To be honest it was all a bit much for me (I do not dislike Nintendo, but I'm not a huge fan of any of their franchises either), so I got sick of the music in each mode very quickly.
