Inspired by the arcade classic Kung-Fu Master, Dragon Wang (ドラゴン・ワン) is an action game for the SG-1000. You play as Wang (Chinese for "King"), a Kung-Fu master (inspired by Jackie Chan or his character, Thomas), and must kick other men across four stages. This is the prequel to Kung Fu Kid for the Sega Master System.

Standout Amid The Mostly Mediocre Early Martial Arts Action Games

Preliminary: Wow this really surprised me. Usually this era of beat em ups or martial arts action games are sooo clunky. And this one definitely has its clunkiness, but it's surprisingly tight and learnable. I found myself figuring out the quirks and pushing through the difficulty (sheesh was it hard to make it to Warpman with a decent amount of health left, and then he's brutally hard warping around on you!). Michael just got home and we shall see what I think of this when I revisit this tomorrow and push on to Round 2. I get the feeling there might not be a set amount of rounds, but this might still be worth a few more rounds because it stands out as the best martial arts action game so far! enter image description here

Look: 8/10 Great UI, and I love the full body sprites. Not particularly amazing, especially the level design graphics, but the sprites and UI are excellent.

Sound: -/10 Maybe a 6 or a 7, I honestly don't remember it except that it usually didn't annoy me except the flashing ball things.

But it really is a martial arts action platformer action-adventure lol. I mean, after all you're collecting keys to move on to next areas... heh. The Round 2 boss fights, I started thinking of Zelda during their combat, especially Zelda 1. Dang those flashing balls that move in patterns (with the annoying sound effects) sure are difficulty to dodge! The controls are impressively tight, as I expect from SG-1000 (so well-done for its time), but the platforming elements still aren't the best.

Feel: 7/10 Still, the difficulty, goofy clunky era of this gameplay, and repetitive nature to the rounds and bosses were always looming. I found myself keep pushing and pushing despite these reservations--after all, I felt like I was getting better and better with each round!

Attachment: 8/10 And sure enough, on the 3rd round I got sick of the difficulty (and having to re-fight all the prior bosses to get to the new boss for each round). Great job with refilling your health after each boss/key, but it still wasn't enough to get me to push through. This could definitely be worth a replay, though, and I could see myself showing my brother who really likes Mortal Kombat and just as a pick-up-and-play game, an early standout for beat em ups and martial arts action games, and for the boss concept.
