On Tuesday, November 8th 2016, I went over to a friend's house after work to check out the recently released PSVR. For those who don't remember, this was also the night of the 2016 Presidential Election. On the drive over, it was looking like Hillary Clinton had the thing in the bag and I was feeling good. By the time I put on the VR headset, certain news outlets were expressing some concern over the numbers that were coming in. By the time I had completed Batman: Arkham VR, it had been declared that Donald Trump was the winner, and would be the 45th President of the United States.
The one two-punch of the ending of this game (being trapped in a prison cell with a deranged lunatic) and the final results of the election (being a citizen of a country run by a deranged lunatic) were enough to send me deep into a state of profound dismay that I, in a way, still have not recovered from. Later that night, as I ate my sad first burrito in this objectively worse new world, I resolved to purchase a PSVR to drown out reality for the next four years. Did Sony have the power of foresight to predict that many Americans would need a literal dark cave for their face, where they could retreat from this nightmarish political landscape? Did Rocksteady know that the film Joker would become a cultural touchstone for Pro-Trump online hate groups like incels and proud-boys? In any case, it's yet another example of video games providing solace at a very difficult point in my life.
