Main game

A star rating for this game is hard... since it feels like the writing team and the art direction team never spoke to each other about what they were trying to do with this game. One wanted to make a great game with a touching story about magical girls... the other wanted to make softcore pornography starring underage girls. So, story and gameplay get at 4 stars, the creepy graphics get a 1 star.
The story centers around a former ballet dancer who, due to an injury, can never dance again. At the beginning of the game, she is depressed and her life holds no meaning anymore (totally understandable, given her circumstances). Then two girls show up and teach her how to become a magical girl - she can cross into another dimension and fight monsters! This other world is like a collective human consciousness, and when people basically have a breakdown, it's because a part of their consciousness has "fragmented" off. Normally, this isn't a big deal, people heal and move on, but because they live at some kind of hellmouth, demons show up and exacerbate this stuff in order to fuel their evil masters (who, once they have …

ANYWAY the entire game takes place in an all-girl's school, where your job is to get to know your classmates, understand their problems, empathize with them, in order to keep their fragments stable and keep the power out of evil hands. So like, really, the bulk of the game involves teen girls talking about their problems -- friends drifting apart, trying to live up to parents' expectations, bullying, overcoming shyness to make friends... etc. It's very wholesome and sweet, and some of the plotlines were honestly so touching I got emotional over them.
Buuuuut... then there's the art.
The camera constantly pans over the girl's bodies during cut scenes (esp when they're in swimsuits) in a way that feels like a lecherous old man zooming in on their asses, etc. Every day after school you have a chance to like, study, socialize, stretch etc. and these boost your stats... or you can choose "get into the bath" and get a scene of the MC naked in the bath, with options to "wash your legs" and etc. It's... honestly super creepy. There are random shower, pool, and changing room scenes with the expected disgusting nonsense. But the worst offender... when it rains, all of the girls in the school's white uniform shirts go see-through and you can see their bras. So like... they had to animate every single girl in the school with a different bra (they're all unique). I just. x__x omg. so much extra work to be so creepy.
These girls are all 14 years old, also. Did I mention that? YEAH. They're first years, so at MOST they are 15. Great job, Japan. Ugh.
The battle system is interesting. It's turn-based, but while you're waiting for your turn, you can hold down buttons to build your defense, heal yourself, or other stat boosts. I'm really not a hardcore gamer by any means, but I had to crank the difficulty to hard just so battle wouldn't be laughably easy. (From reading stuff online, this may have been my fault for having too much fun on side quests and accidentally boosting my chars' stats too high lmao)
Basically.... I don't know. I genuinely liked the game... if I aggressively ignored ALL OF THE VISUALS. And it sucks that a game that's like, what, $55??? you need to do that much compartmentalizing in your brain just to get through. But the story was genuinely great and I had a lot of fun with it. I wish I could download a mod that turned the creep factor WAY DOWN but... blah. SIGH.
It took me a long time to finish this game, not because it's bad, but because it's one of those games that, once you finish a session, you don't feel like playing again. It's a very pretty game, but also very uninspiring. It's like watching a slice of life anime, one of those where nothing happens.
Just got the platinum. It's an okay game. It's nice to play a magical girl game that isn't a bad spin-off of some anime, but it's still nothing special. It's a story of the power of friendship through and through. All of your power ups come through helping people and getting to know your friends better. The characters themselves are fine: nice designs and decent personalities, but nothing too deep. I'll play the second one at some point and maybe check out the mobile one, but it's not a priority.
It also seems like whoever did the English localization did not hire a QA team. There are a quite a few typos and inconsistencies. I didn't analyze the TL itself that much, but nothing struck me as obviously wrong.
Just finished chapter six. Despite its flaws, it's hard to not love the game. The combat has gotten stale, but the decent animation and slick UI is doing a good job to make the combat at the very least, entertaining.
The low budget feeling also started to kick in, but they did a great job to make the most out of what they have. The cutscenes are directed in a fairly cinematic way that the "basic"-ness of it doesn't really matter, they look nice. And while there are a lot to say about the other world, the school is surprisingly detailed, even more so than games like Persona 5. The game isn't fully voiced, but for the lines that do get voiced, the voice acting is amazing.
The music, art direction, and story really carried the whole experience. it's really personal story in a genre that's mostly focused on the world rather than the characters. Can't say I've played any JRPG like this. I get why most people are recommending this game to mahou shoujo fans, but I think this game will be appreciated more by fans of japanese teen drama media in general. If you're a fan of anime …

I'm sorry, what the hell is Blue Reflection and why does it have a season's pass that costs more than $100 CAD? I was browsing the current PS store deals, and this was in the add-on deals section. This is ludicrous. That's not including the price of the game, just the Season Pass to cover the cost of all the DLC. The game itself is $79.99 CAD.

Too repetitive in the beginning. The ending felt rushed and the game quality went down in the last couple chapters with more lag and more typos.
The premise was very interesting but the execution was lacking. Would make a nice anime.
I finally beat this game... the story gets really emotional in the last few hours and I basically sobbed my way through the ending. Better/more in-depth review potentially coming soon,
SIGH well they just introduced a character as having a "condition" very similar to autism, and then are making a huge point that she has no emotions. Their magic is based on emotion, and she has none. Great. ugh.
Edit: Nevermind they're making a point that her emotions are different somehow? Or that she didn't know how to recognize them before? This is still just a really weird subplot they have going on.
I've been enjoying playing this.... in spite of the extremely gratuitous fan service that occurs every two minutes. The camera pans over the girl's butts in swimsuits, and they have "rainy days" where all of the girls run around completely drenched so you can see through their bras through their white shirts. The available DLC is several outfit packs... including swimsuits for all the girls and just... towels. For all the girls.
Every day you go home, you also have the option to "enter the bath" which gives you a cutscene of her bathing. Sigh.
There is no explicit nudity, but the sexualization of girls who are first years in high school (meaning they are about 15-16 years old) is super gross to me.
Which I hate because this game is fun, the story and characters are fun, and it's the only "magical girl"-style rpg that I've ever seen. SIGHHHHHH.
I just started playing this... I was super excited about the idea of a jprg based around the magical girl trope. But the fan service is gratuitous, and gross considering they are high school girls. I'm continuing to play it while just, aggressively ignoring that part.
Since (so far) much of the plot revolves around giving advice to people about their problems, it would be a much more compelling game if they gave you the option to choose between 1-3 advice options, and you got to see that play out in the girls' lives. Instead, the characters ask your MC what to do, and she just goes ahead and answers for you. Eh.
I did enjoy Blue Reflection and I only need to do the stupid Dark Cave game to get my platinum trophy. That being said I thought it was quite boring, repetitive and too easy. Definitely not in the class of a Mana Khemia of which this game reminds me .Apparently there are many players or the makers think there are, who want to see very young girls with huge breasts and asses because it was a constant in this game and now even worse in the game I am playing Nights of Azure 2.
