The concept of a faster-paced, more challenging version of an existing mario game is great; mario games are for everyone so that means those who want some tougher challenges typically have to wait until the back half or post credits for the really good stuff. It mostly works, but feels only a half fulfillment of the idea. The skeleton of the old game is there so there are lives and you get put back on the map screen after every death, which feels anachronistic and frustrating on harder levels; there's a reason super meat boy, celeste, trials, etc made retrying as painless as possible. The 100s time-limit also feels like a half measure. It adds a general sense of pressure, which I quite like, but because collectibles can be got across multiple runs, time is never meaningfully a part of the challenge. However, because the levels are condensed, they're very focused and the level design is great. It doesn't fully execute the concept but it's still a good platformer.

This game is nearly unplayable. I haven't played a Mario game since SNES, so maybe this is just how these games are, now. Luigi floats all over the place. It takes FOREVER for him to get moving, he slides so far when you stop, he has an air-kicking jump like in Super Mario Bros. 2 that lets him get a little farther, but it's inconsistent and is better off never used as it lulls you into a false sense of what Luigi is capable of. The game isn't fun. At all. Think of it as the opposite of Super Meat Boy. "Hella-tight controls" turn into "mashed potato controls." I know it's not supposed to be a Meat Boy game, but it's barely playable as it is. I can't imagine how kids are expected to play this.
