It also replaces the single screens linked together of the original version into a true 2.5D side-scrolling game. While there are various enhancements and details to the character and the scenery, the basic gameplay is still largely similar in a side by side comparison. The GameSpeak system Abe uses to command and talk to other characters start with the same commands, but can later be expanded. This version of the game supports leaderboards for the completion time of each mode and the overall game. There are three difficulty levels and the game. It includes the original cooperative function of the original game when another player can take over when the first player dies, taking turns controlling Abe. Read less

Really liked the original and this version as well. The big disappointment was the controls though, I don’t know how to describe it but just didn’t feel really tight like a platformer like this should.

The original Abe's Oddysee was a revelation to me on the Playstation. It was difficult but I enjoyed it for both the gameplay and its storytelling. I found the graphics, sound design and just the world in general to be well made and fascinating. There was platforming but the puzzle aspect of rescuing Mudokens made it feel like something new to me. I hadn't really kept up with the franchise after that game since it would move to a different console and different genres but I would always think about the game randomly and check in to see what the creators were up to. After the announcement of this remake, I was eager to see how it would turn out.

I feel like this is one of the best outcomes that a remake could have. Amazing graphics and sound that far exceed the original and quality of life changes that remove some of the frustrating gameplay aspects of the original game while preserving what made the original game so great. I remember some complaints that the remake is not as dark as the original game which may be true since I haven't played the original since I had it on the Playstation but regardless I enjoyed the remake a lot and feel that the creators put lots of thought, passion and effort into making it even better without straying far from the original base. I played this with a gamepad on the PC and it's nice that there are some options to change certain controls to be closer to the original Playstation. I think I ended up using some hybrid of the two.

I'm definitely looking forward to Soul Storm as I never did play Abe's Exoddus.

Needed something to play while waiting for Batman. I'm happy I finally finished this game, since I played it when it first came out. It was still as clunky as the original, but it was a pretty solid experience. Finished in 2 sittings, close to 6 hours

What a disappointment. Terrible port. Just because you can render something in 3D doesn't mean you should. For a start the framerate here is average to downright abysmal at times. Load times are also quite a bit longer than you would expect for the amount of level it loads.

What a disappointment. Terrible port. Just because you can render something in 3D doesn't mean you should. For a start the framerate here is average to downright abysmal at times. Load times are also quite a bit longer than you would expect for the amount of level it loads.

The controls are a big step back from the original. Your left analog stick controls your speed depending on how hard you move it. This means it is very easy to break into a stride at unexpected times, which isn't great when trying to navigate mines. Gone is a button just for taking a leap forward, which is now replaced with jumping and then tapping the analog stick straight after. This is very awkward and I couldn't count the times Abe jumped up onto a ledge unintentionally due to this change.

I really don't understand the high review scores this title got elsewhere on the Web. I would possibly have rated it a 1 but because the source material was great I couldn't bring myself to. Not recommended.
