Most of the graphics and sounds have been reworked, the weapons have been made more extreme and some fairly strange things (laser-firing WWII planes and ships that run on ground) have been added. The trademark P-38 has been replaced with a biplane, the Boeing-Stearman Model 75. Read less

The weapon/powerup/life system here is unique and really makes this game different than other shmups of the era. There is no one hit deaths, instead you loose energy, which you can either fill up with powerups, or you get a better weapon. Better weapons also are always on a timer, so you must always try to get the weapon powerup again before it runs out. While that might sound bad and awfully pressuring, it works pretty well in the game.

Disliked:

It, like many really old shmups, has very bland levels, and very little variety in environments. I don't think anything ever visually changes much, except for the last level maybe, that finally changes the time of day. In the end the difficulty level really got unmanageable for me though, and since your life energy also constantly runs out even if you don't get hit, it sometimes felt unfair to die even if I managed to fly relatively well.

Summary:

It's a classic shmup that feels quite a bit different from the norm, which is very commendable in a genre that otherwise often lacks innovation. If you can get past the arcade difficulty in the end, and the fact that it lacks variety, this is a worthwile game to check out.
