At first, I didn't understand why the game was so hated, but as I progressed, I started to notice that it was quite easy and the boss battles were a joke; some enemies couldn't even hurt you. But honestly, I couldn't hate it. I had a lot of fun with the game, despite the poor programming.

All the rest you are just shooting all the enemy cause it gave no incentive to use the weapons really and dont even get me started on the lock on system.

Gameplay sucks, it's god awful, it's not broken, or outstandingly bad, there's no design questions that makes you go "what were they thinking ???" the issue is more discreet, game's just extremely boring, no feedback, maps that are way too big, enemies that are hell to fight, and weird weapon balance (weaapons are all the same and shoot to win)
I like Lucia though, she's cute, wish she was in a better game

I don't think I've ever written a review for a game I've given 1 star before. Hell, I rarely even give out 1 star ratings. I typically only use them when a game is wholly unplayable for some reason or has virtually nothing about it I can praise. Yet this feels like it deserves special attention. I went into this game with the full knowledge that the game has a very bad reputation and was still taken aback at how terrible it really is.
There are two points of praise I can give to this game when I push myself to find something good to say.
That's it. Other than those two points, I can't really think of anything that struck me as positive about my experience with Devil May Cry 2.
The gameplay feels like a massive step down from the previous game. Dante doesn't really have a "moveset" here so much as a string of attacks that you can choose to end early. Enemy AI feels slow and broken, making every encounter way too easy even for someone who sucks at the genre like me. Many enemies also feel like they were designed for something more ranged combat-focused like Resident Evil, as they refuse to come down into melee range, forcing you to spam your guns on them till they die. The game also has several spots where it infinitely spawns enemies without warning and also respawns enemy hordes you've already defeated. It's obnoxious to deal with when you're just trying to find the door to the next room and get ganked by enemies you've killed already.
The visuals (both the game world and UI design) are drab and ugly. I guess Dante looks alright? But still not great. The soundtrack is pounding and irritating to listen to a lot of the time. The voice acting is worse than the infamous first game's without being nearly as funny and there is just about no coherency to the story being told here whatsoever. Dante's signature playful attitude feels entirely missing and instead he comes off as cold and unattached.

There's really no reason to play this game outside of if you have an interest in playing through the series in release order like me. It's not even a "so bad it's good" kind of game. It's just bad.
Hm. Except maybe the helicopter boss. That was kind of funny.

Yeesh, Dante feels like shit to control. I don't know how they took such a massive step down from the previous game on the same hardware like this. It's not that he's not responsive exactly. I think it's a weird combo of camera movement and the speed at which he moves across the screen. It feels terrible. Also what's up with there being like a single sword attack I can use? Maybe I'm missing something with the controls but it feels like I'm locked into the same 3-4 hit combo every time I attack.
I had an idea of this game's reputation going in but didn't think they'd mess up the most basic stuff like this. Gonna keep pushing and see if things get better, but uh, it doesn't look good folks.

Gone are the Resident Evil style pre-rendered backgrounds to be replaced with massive ugly backdrops that zoom out to make you the size of an ant. The gameplay actually IS difficult, but for the wrong reasons. Enemies are bullet sponges and one fight in particular (Helicopter boss) was such a slog I nearly gave up on this game. Even the storytelling is bad (which is not an especially high mark to hit for Devil May Cry). Best not revisit this if you had semi-fond memories for it.

This game being the fourth worst-ranked game on this site didn't give me any confidence that I was in for a good time but I have a habit of seeing games through to the end even if I know they are bad. I started off feeling weird because on the first mission I actually kind of liked the game. I saw the new movement they added and was like maybe this game isn't actually as dog as people say and maybe it's closer to mid. Although I soon saw this game unravel into the monstrosity it truly is. After the seventh mission as Dante, I gave up because I just couldn't take it anymore. I was telling myself that it's a short game and I can see it through but then I told myself something, "I don't deserve the pain of playing this game". I would go in-depth about what the game does right and wrong but, to be honest, I could probably go on forever on everything they messed up here. This game has basically no story, no personality, no balance, pretty bad AI, and some of the most questionable enemy designs I've ever seen (like seriously what the fuck are the Infested Tank & Infested Chopper enemies). And essentially if you want anything to die all you have to do is enter devil trigger and then just hold down the shoot button and you can eradicate any living being in sight. I've heard that Lucia's campaign is better than Dantes but to be honest I don't think anything can save this game from what I just experienced. I read about the development of this game and it is impressive that they were able to turn it into a "playable" game in just about 4 months. But even the story of its development can't help me give this game any extra points. From what I've heard the only reason someone should play this game is to truly appreciate how they made a comeback in the form of dmc3. 2/10, I'm anticipating seeing how Devil May Cry 3 blows my mind in the opposite way this game did.

After defeating a group of demons in the museum, Lucia invites Dante to follow her to Dumary Island, where he meets his mother, Matier. Matier explains that he once fought alongside Dante's father, Sparda, to defend the island against demons. He asks Dante to help him fight Arius, an international businessman who uses demonic power to conquer the world.Dante flips a coin in response and decides to help when the coin lands on their heads. After Dante leaves, Matier and Lucia discuss Arcana-the items Arius needs to raise the Demon Argosax. Lucia eventually confronts Arius, who reveals that he is her creation. When he moves to hit her, she uses her magic to blow him up. Shortly after, Dante meets Lucia, who gives him the last of the Arcana before leaving.Dante then meets Matier and tries to pass the Arcana on to him. Matier, in turn, asks Dante to take the Arcana to save Lucia, who goes to fight Arius again.Dante flips the coin again to decide whether to help or not; he lands on their heads and heads off to help Lucia.Meanwhile, Lucia Decamps to the Uroboros Tower and attacks Arius, who captures her. Dante arrives and trades Arcana for Lucia, then attacks Arius. In order to escape, Arius forces Dante to Decide between saving Lucia or killing her. Worried about the ritual and conflicted about herself, Lucia wonders how they are going to stop Arius. Dante waves him off, saying he will find a way.Dante leaves Lucia to think while he leaves to defeat Arius. Matier arrives soon after, relieves Lucia's mind and convinces her to rejoin the fight against Arius.Dante arrives at the tower to find Arius in the middle of his Immortality-inducing ritual. However, Dante is not worried, as he replaces one of the arcana with a fake coin.Another fight ensues, in which Dante finishes off Arius with his pistols. Outside, Lucia confronts Dante and asks him to kill her, because she is afraid that he will become a Demon himself. Before the problem can be solved, a huge stream of energy hits the tower, and a portal to the Demon world opens. Dante and Lucia argue about who to let in and close from the inside; Dante offers to leave the matter to fate. He flips the coin and lands on their heads once again, leaving Dante with Lucia to enter the portal to deal with Argosax, who was partially summoned after leaving the coin. After Dante leaves, Arius returns to life carrying demonic power. While Lucia is fighting Arius, she finds herself injured and tries to distract him, which fails and Lucia goes on to defeat him.Inside the portal, Dante fights and defeats Argosax. After finding a closed portal behind him, Dante instead makes his way to the Demon kingdom on a motorcycle. After the war, confiding in Lucia about Dante's fate, Sparda tries to Matier, insisting that he returned from a similar trip. Lucia examines the coin Dante left with her and discovers that both sides are the same. Some time later, in Dante's shop, Lucia wonders about Dante. The sound of a motorcycle echoes outside, and Lucia leaves to investigate. If Dante returns, the player will not be shown. The gameplay is as follows.in this game consisting of 31 episodes, you are trying to kill the creatures and pass the episode. The music of the game is beautiful. If you are not too obsessed with graphics and you like retro games, this game is for you.My rating for the game: 10/10 (y) Good games to everyone 🙂

This mini-campaign doesn't add so much and doesn't have so many changes but it complements the story. Putting both campaigns together the game barely lasts 6 hours like its predecessor. The final result left me with a bit of a bittersweet taste because although the technical improvements are noticeable, it still leaves much to be desired.

because anything that shoots is mightier than the 3 samey swords (unless if you use your c===B as both, then you could have the most powerful weapon in DMC).
Like everyone else has said, Devil May Cry 2 is fucking awful. It is one of the most tedious, incompetent games that I have played. I could only give an ounce of credit to Devil May Cry 2, and it's that you can switch guns on the fly and the addition of the bloody palace, which carries over to later DMC games.
Devil May Cry 2 is worse than its predecessor in every way. The auto lock on is even worse. There are levels that want you to hit something to progress the level, but when you're trying to rush through this abomination, like DMC1, Dante locks onto the enemy. I say that it's worse because DMC1 didn't implement these kinds of switches all that much compared to DMC2. Mission 14 is the worst level that I have ever played in my life. What I said before applies here. There are 4 scattered orbs around the level that you have to hit a bunch of times to progress. If you return to the same portion of the map, the same setup of enemies respawns. 1 orb was hard to find because you don't know what is an invisible barrier and what isn't. Also Phantom from DMC1 shows up in this game because reasons and he is just worse in this game.
The combat is a downgrade from the first. There are 3 swords, all of them have the same movesets. The delayed input has been removed from the game so the "3 movesets" are lacking compared to DMC1. DMC2 doesn't tell the player what buttons or combinations do. I know that there is this flip attack thing that you do in the air. I don't know what the hell it is, but DMC2 doesn't tell you how to use that combo. Enemies don't make you switch to different ways of play so as said in the start, anything is better than a sword. Ebony and Ivory are starters to "launch enemies", and then you switch to the akimbo SMG's to launch them into fucking space. The shotgun can stagger enemies to the point where they can't attack you. Even before they get up, you can still stagger them again, leaving them in this loop. The rocket launcher is a damage dealer so you might as well stand from afar and shoot. From what I have heard, if you beat DMC2 on "hard difficulty", you unlock Trish from DMC1 and she plays just like DMC1 Dante with delayed inputs and all. Why Dante doesn't have her moveset boggles my mind.
DMC2's story is extremely minimal, but I don't think that it is a good decision. DMC2 feels like something that is all in a day's work for Dante. Speaking of Dante, he is extremely quiet in this game. There is barely any dialogue between Dante and the bosses. They're just there, you kill them, they die. That's it. Dante just goes to places. No reason, he just goes there. Bosses in this game just exist because they exist. There is no reason why Phantom is alive or Griffin is a part of the final boss. The environments are nowhere near as cohesive as Mallet Island. Visually, it is the blandest looking game that I have played since Modern Warfare 3. While the levels tried to look barren just to make the player feel oppressed like in DMC1, they're just boring.
It's hilarious to me that when Devil May Cry 5's recap brought up DMC2, it went straight into DMC4 1 SENTENCE LATER, and I think that says something about Devil May Cry 2. It is an almost worthless game that adds only 2 good things to the series and nothing else. Don't play it because it's bad. This is not the funny kind of bad. This is just bad. Fuck this game. Don't play it.
FINAL RATING: 1.5/10

The gameplay is still stylish, but Dante (hell, I'll call him Daniel) is practically mute and is way too tryhard; flipping coins like a Cool Kid™ to make all his decisions. The story is absolutely nonsense. Characters teleport around when convenient, layouts of maps seemingly change in cutscenes. You'll find yourself saying "What?" so many times it's (almost) not even funny. I still couldn't tell you if Daniel even knows who Lucia (the other main character) is. Or more importantly, what the hell he's doing on Dumary Island, and by extension, the campaign itself.
Anyway, going in with a 2003 hack n' slash mindset, it's not that bad and genuinely offers some enjoyment to be had.

Yes, it's bad. It's really really bad.
And not only because some "mechanics that were good on its day but are obsolete now". Even trying to analyse it like it was 2003 it has serious faults in gameplay, design, plot, narrative and even style.
