Set in the aftermath of its award-winning predecessor, Sniper Elite 4 continues the series’ World War Two heritage by transporting players across the beautiful Italian peninsula, from sun-drenched Mediterranean coastal towns, to colossal Nazi mega structures, daunting forests and giddying mountain monasteries inspired by Monte Cassino. Covert agent and elite marksman Karl Fairburne must fight alongside the brave men and women of the Italian Resistance to help free their country from the yoke of Fascism, and defeat a terrifying new threat with the potential to halt the Allied fightback in Europe before it’s even begun. If his mission fails, there will be no Operation Overlord, no D-Day landings, and no Victory in Europe. Read less

Garbage story and janky programming, including downright bizarre enemy pathing. Still, it's amazing in co-op, and I'm upping the rating by one star because of that. With two players, the game opens up to distractions, flanking, spotter-sniper pairing, and double the chances for any plan to get shot to pieces when one of you inevitably turns a corner into a Nazi. Of course, that just means watching your buddy pull a Saving Private Ryan as he sprints halfway across the map to your position, rescuing you just in time for you both to die to an incoming bomb. There's also something nice about having another person there to see your best shots land. Give me more fun duos games like this if you have them!

The 4th Sniper Elite entry is a tactical third-person shooter, set during World War II. The game follows the same protagonist as the previous entry, Karl Fairburne, as he operates behind enemy lines, this time in Italy, to weaken Axis forces through sabotage, intelligence gathering, and strategic assassinations. Unlike many fast-paced shooters, the game emphasizes patience, positioning, and careful planning, making it feel closer to a stealth sandbox than a traditional action game. As the title suggests, the intention is to try to emulate a sniper routine, so don't expect flashy gameplay seen in most military shooters.

One of the defining strengths of this game is its excellent sniping system, which is in steady evolution with each new entry. Shots are influenced by factors such as bullet drop, wind direction, distance, and the character’s heart rate. And although it is not as deep as a realistic military shooters, such as ArmA for example, it still has a good balance between realism and arcady gameplay. The series’ iconic X-ray kill cam also returns, showing the bullet traveling through enemies in slow motion and highlighting the internal damage caused by the shot. And while it is very satisfying the first few times you experience it, I usually turn this off so it helps me with immersion and focus.

The mission design is another major highlight, each level is large and open, functioning almost like a sandbox environment where you can approach objectives in multiple ways. I think this entry has the biggest maps so far, making them way less linear than previous titles. Some may prefer to remain hidden, eliminating enemies quietly and using environmental sounds, which is my favorite style. Others might set traps, sabotage vehicles, or trigger distractions to manipulate enemy patrols. The freedom offered by these maps encourages experimentation and replayability. I highly recommend trying to complete all optional objectives, it makes up for a much more interesting experience, elevating the difficulty.

For me, the stealth mechanics play a central role in the experience, in my opinion, focusing on stealth is the best way to experience the titles of this franchise. You must manage visibility, noise, and enemy awareness while navigating through bases, villages, and fortifications. Although these mechanics are present in the titles of this franchise, overall this entry, with bigger maps, more optional objectives, and more freedom to approach situations, makes up for a clear evolution up to this point. There is a very subtle vibe to this experience that brings me back to the old days of Medal of Honor, which even though you are playing a military war game, it doesn't feel rushed. The gameplay loop can almost be considered coozy, you can take your time to tag enemies, recognize the environment, plan routes and place good shots.

As for the visuals, it presents varied and attractive environments inspired by the Italian countryside. Coastal towns, forests, mountains, and military installations provide a good mix of landscapes, and the larger map design compared to previous entries helps make the campaign feel more expansive. The OST and sound design also contribute to the atmosphere, particularly when distant gunfire, wind, and environmental noise reinforce the tension of waiting for the perfect shot. I also love the voice-acting, which improves the immersion a lot since you often hear soldiers speaking italian.

I can't say anything about it's coop elements since I played this entirely solo, so no comments on this regard. Despite its strengths, the narrative itself is not particularly memorable. The story mainly serves as a framework to move the player between missions, and the characters lack strong development. Some objectives can also feel repetitive after extended play, especially when missions revolve around similar tasks like destroying equipment or eliminating officers. This is something that also happened before but, it becomes especially bad this time around due to the bigger maps this title has.

Overall, this title stands out as one of the most polished and enjoyable sniper-focused games. Its combination of realistic shooting mechanics, open-ended mission design, and satisfying stealth gameplay creates a rewarding experience for those who enjoy methodical and tactical approaches to combat. Even years after its release, it remains one of the strongest entries in the Sniper Elite series and a highly recommended title for fans of stealth and precision shooting. A no-brainer if you enjoyed the other games, or if you like st

Intro

Sniper Elite 4 is a stealth/action third person shooter in which you explore medium-large sized locations and kill fascists.

The Good

  • You get to kill tons of fascists, including Hitler himself! (it's the real Hitler this time)
  • As usual, the killcam shows in beautiful gory detail how your bullets kills fascists.
  • Levels are way bigger than they were in SE3 and you have much more freedom.
  • There's a little skill system which allows you to pick between two skills for six slots.
  • There's silent ammo for rifles and pistols, making sniping much less reliant on environmental sounds and allowing you to pick non-Welrod pistols.
  • Grenades and mines have two different modes now (usually a delay).
  • TNT can self-explode now.
  • More variety in enemies.
  • You can shoot almost all lamps now.
  • Nice locations.
  • You can create a detailed custom difficulty.
  • Challenges, ribbons, etc. are nice additions.
  • Weapon unlock system encourages playing differently.

The Bad

  • Weapon unlock system includes some really annoying and grindy challenges.
  • Pointless unlock system for some weapons and consumables.
  • Some weapons seem useless.

The Ugly

Both a mission of the DLC campaign and the "kill Hitler" mission have super-annoying alarms that cannot be turned off.

Conclusion

This is a vast improvement over SE3, just like it was a huge leap from SE2. It basically feels like the shackles have come off and the player is finally truly free to take out the enemy like they want to. Recommended to anyone who loves sneaky murder man games.

Overall, I enjoyed this but have several gripes... They have made so many of these games by now that I'd have expected them to improve many mechanics and incorporate player feedback. Overall, this is a great engine and at it's best... However, the story is very trivial, and they have gamificationified EVERYTRHING that makes it feel like a Call of Duty Game... You get XP and points and all this stuff and none of it matters because, if you are smart like me... you're simply going to use the De Carlise Carbine with it's integrated suppressor and never look back, lol. There is like no reason to experiment with any of the other weapons or explore builds or equipment (i began forcing myself to use mines/traps because i was curious but its more of a chore than a utility to implement them, this game is just quite simple and straight forward)

I dont like this trend of gamifiying games to the point they feel like slot machines in some pay to win casino... Eidos did this with Deus Ex Human Revolution and it feels so obviously shoe horned in and out of place. I think this trend started with COD?

Kill cams, bullet time, trajectory and all the sniper engine stuff is good though. I'm unsure how improved it is from previous versions, it feels identical. Stalking your enemies is still fun. the game play overall really hasnt changed that much.

The setting of Italy is actually quite good and very satisfying. You fight a mix of italian and german troops at times and they speak italian. Stuff looks italian (Think cs_italy) and most of the maps are pretty good and big and open, and have differnet avenues of approach (they are an improvement from V3 which at times felt a bit railroad-y, this is not railroad-y at all!)

But, As I mentioned the story suffers (or at least I thought so, and wasn't really into it) You do get updates on objectives in game though, and can even find hidden ones in some of the maps (not sure how many) I really disliked all the collectibles and 'letters from home' that are filler-y nonsense... I disliked that I didnt care for any of the lore really, and that limited my immersion.

There is also a 'kill Hitler' DLC mission here (same as SE3) but its not nearly as good IMO. The Deathstorm DLC was actually pretty good and offered some unique missions (Sniper Castles)

Overall, Sniper Elite 2 remains my favorite in the series. The engine may have improved but the gameplay and other elements of that game I feel were at it's prime.

IF you want a sniping game, I would recommend the Ghost Warrior series over this... It's more tactical more intense and overall more interesting (plus you get cool technologies like drones to surveil and tag enemies) Sniper Elite is starting to feel like mediocre world war 2 COD nonsense. It's not really evolving or introducing too much in the way of new ideas. It is what it is.

I was not much of a fan of the series. I've played 1, 2, 3 at an easy difficulty, going through the campaigns fairly quick.

After several years, I started playing SE 4 out of a personal desire of learning to shoot without aim assist on the high difficulty (currently just finished on Sniper Elite without aim assist), slowly ascending to authentic, maybe authentic plus, in a time where I had some hard time at work and in my personal life. After slowly sinking into the atmosphere, planning ahead, watching, observing, taking my time to learn how to aim properly, paying close attention to your surroundings with your eyes and ears, changing from stealth to full combat because of one tiny mistake, not only did it help me recalibrate myself, it helped me learn patience differently and act differently on unexpected situations while remaining true to my playstyle.

The maps are huge and diverse that feel alive. The sound is on the spot, graphics are gorgeous. The story? It is neither here or there but it doesn't really matter though. Next stop Sniper Elite 5 and then the Souls series with Sekiro last ( oh man the journey)

The only thing negative about it, is the fact that every time i go into the bushes to hide, that damn sound cue plays. I get it, it's already making the "swish swoosh" sound when entering there i don't need the full song.

P.S. Thank you reader for taking the time to read my ramblings about this game- peace be upon you!!!

This is the first and only game out the Sniper Elite/Zombie Army sagas I’ve played so far, and I only tried it because it was on Game Pass, but I have to say I liked it more than I thought I would. As long as you’re ok with what the game is offering - which is to say a narrow, stealth focused gameplay experience against the backdrop of a small WW2 subplot -, there’s quite a bit to enjoy here. The systems are simple and fairly intuitive allowing you to approach each mission in a variety of ways, the maps are actually ample and beautiful to look at, the AI is pretty decent for the most part, and even the story, usually basic in these types of games, is actually okay in the sense that it allows for some character building. Additionally, SE4 doesn’t outstay its welcome - even if you take your time exploring the map, being very stealthy and doing all side quests, like I did, you can easily finish it in about 15hrs. And of course, the proprietary killcam is a blast, and at least to me it never got old (you can also adjust its frequency if you want).

The game does have a few issues that are hard to ignore: the voice acting (aside from the main character which is actually quite good) is unintentionally hilarious, some button mapping decisions, at least on Xbox, felt poor and resulted in unintended actions (ie picking up a body when you’re trying to do a quick melee takedown thus blowing your cover), and I also felt that the level design leaves something to be desired, in the sense that it could do with more vantage points that a sniper would benefit from. As I said these issues are there and are hard to ignore, but for the most part they play a minor role in what was otherwise a fun experience.

If you’re a fan of sniper games I would definitely recommend giving Sniper Elite 4 a go, though if that’s the case you probably did that already. If you’re not I’d still say it might be a good game to get, especially if you have it on a subscription service or see it at a discount. Considering I wasn’t expecting much and it clearly exceeded my expectations, I’d probably give it a 7/10.

Who would have thought that a game titled "Sniper Elite 4" wouldn't have a deep, thought-provoking story? No big surprise here, but disappointing nonetheless. Here's a brief synopsis: Lieutenant Badass McToughGuy (your character) is the snipiest, shootiest, sneakiest, stabbiest, blowstuffupiest guy in the Allied military. Only he can stop the Nazi plot to build a new superweapon that will turn the tide in the Fuhrer's favor. His targets are guarded by the most elite troops of the Wehrmacht, but fortunately he's not distracted by things like a personality, a backstory, meaningful dialogue, or relationships with other human beings. Basically, if you've played a WWII shooter before, you already know what the plot/narrative (or lack thereof) has in store.

On the plus side... it was genuinely fun to play. The challenge level was, with the exception of some bits that felt too easy, well-managed. It has a robust stealth system and good, smooth combat mechanics. The level design is optimized to make you feel like a very clever, sneaky sniper and the sniping mechanics feel very authentic without getting bogged down in not-fun things like calculating wind speed. The kill-cam is top-notch, with slo-mo anatomical cross-sections (showing skeletons, organs, arteries, etc, as the bullet blows holes through them) of your victims when you get a good shot or stealth kill. It's even got an RPG-like leveling and weapon mastery system that feels meaningful and adds extra mini-challenges/objectives to aspire to.

TLDR version; very little to no narrative or story but, as a WWII stealth/combat/sniping simulator it's very polished.

Fun if you don't think too much about it.

If you're looking for something super realistic then that's not the game for you. It's a strange mixture of somewhat advanced sniping combined with metal gear solid style sneaking around. I quickly decided to just have fun with it and don't care too much about trying to be too stealthy and after finishing it I feel that was the right choice.

Occasional frantic firefights caused by that approach were kind of fun and broke the monotony of constant sneaking and waiting for sound cover to fire a shot. However it was no substitute for a sneaky well-timed sniper shot.

The game most quickly can be described as a metal gear solid kind of game set in the world war two italy focusing on sniping. There are some pretty cool mechanics though - especially trying to time your shots with other sounds like airplanes passing or big guns firing is standing out as a novelty. You also get a big array to tools and items to play with and progress. From explosives to different guns and traps.

The visuals are of high quality and the setting looks really well. The levels are well designed with many ways to approach the main and secondary goals. That's probably the strongest part of the game allowing for a lot of freedom and custom problem solving. You can sneak your way around, you can lay out some traps or you can go in guns blazing which obviously is not the intended way but you can.

Italy is a really nice theme for the game with varying environments, white villas etc.

The character control is mostly fine although it feels a bit stiff at times. It's not near the metal gear solid phantom pain levels but there were only a few times were I wished for just a bit more flexibility.

The story is meaningless and unnecessary. The pre mission briefings felt a bit too long with ability to talk with characters that didn't add much but somehow felt like I had to go through the meaningless dialogs. I guess having no story at all would make even less sense but as things are I have no idea at the moment what it was about as it was completely forgotten now.

Overall a pretty cool game though. With a lot of repeatability value though completely forgettable story.
