In the 25 years since its release, it seems as though Silent Hill 2 has become considered quite possibly the greatest horror game ever made. I think there are two primary factors to that: One, it's a game that genuinely gets under your skin and feels unnerving the majority of the time, and two, it ends with a complicated, metaphorical conclusion that allows for plenty of discussion and interpretation. For these two reasons especially, I agree with this game being in that conversation (I'd also argue it's the best Silent Hill game as well, not counting P.T.), and so much of what makes this game successful is the vibes. It's because of that that some of the weakest elements of Silent Hill 2 for me, in the original and in this remake, are related to the actual gameplay.

I'll start with the negative. I played this on easy difficulty for most of my playthrough, and even with that, this game took me almost 20 hours. I appreciate the different areas that this game asks you to explore, but you can't tell me that cutting one or two of them wouldn't help Silent Hill 2 as a whole. If this were a 10-12-hour adventure, I do think it would make this story more effective in the long run.

This is also a game that never makes me care about combat. I get it, the game wants to make you escape these horrors or conserve your ammo and health, so combat is something you often want to avoid. But when you are forced into a fight, I was never drawn into that aspect of the game. There are about four different types of creatures you keep coming across, several of which have cheap approaches that almost always injure you. And when you have to fight big boss battles, I never had any indication that what I was doing was working or hurting the enemy in any real way. I just kept shooting and shooting until the encounter ended, and I kept going on my way. There's rarely any strategy to these fights, just run, point, and shoot.

But maybe I feel that way because Silent Hill 2 works best for me when it's essentially just an adventure game. I kind of love going into a strange building, picking up a map, seeing which rooms I can get into, finding hints and tools to solve this mystery, and working my way through these labyrinths. Maybe that's why I really started to fall for this game near the end, when you enter the hotel, and there are barely any enemies, but a huge hotel for you to explore. These individual areas almost feel like Silent Hill 2's equivalent to dungeons, and to me, it's the best part of the game.

I'm also still impressed with how Silent Hill 2 approaches an extremely dark narrative about a husband losing his wife and the internal torment he's still struggling with. In fact, Silent Hill 2 presents this place as more of a place of grief that people find themselves getting lost in, and because of that, it does undercut some of the fear for me. Still, the game's approach to broaching such a difficult topic is quite fascinating. For example, this is a game that even discusses a character who was clearly sexually abused and does so in a fairly well-handled way.

Silent Hill 2 works because it presents larger ideas than just simply trying to scare you. Of course they can throw jump scares and eerie imagery into a game and be effective, but Silent Hill 2 does this with a story that tries to leave an impression, and that makes all the difference. I'm glad this remake cleans up the original and allows others to play this without spending hundreds of dollars. Silent Hill 2 is a horror classic for a reason, and its legacy only grows stronger with this impressive remake.

On the one hand, it makes you empathise with the protagonist a bit more, but on the other hand I was just burnt out at the end, both with the final puzzles and the combat.

The game is genuinely terrifying and the sound design is simply incredible.

This was such a good experience. Although never played the original game, I've been a huge fan of the aesthetic and soundtrack for a very long time. That being said, I didn't know much about the details of the plot upon going in. And I didn't know what would happen or where we would go.

The silent hill presetned in the remake is a wonderful place to hang out at. This game is so much about the vibes. The tension built up by the monsters roaming around, some to be heard on the radio, some not, builds with this sort of tense unknowing that makes it really exciting to hang around.

We visit many places in the town, and I really love each and every one of them, especially the travel between and the plot sort of spanning around it. The narrative is pretty symbolic and abstract, but it really adds to this dreamlike feeling that permeates the whole game.

I will make an extra excellent mark on the incorporation of the soundtrack, which is kept intact but leveled up from the original, thanks to the absolutely outstanding sound design. Chefs kiss times a hundred.

Definitely will be making it into one of the best games I played in 2025, and will certainly revisit for the new game +.

This is my first silent hill game, I didnt have any prior knowledge on what to expect apart from the good reviews I saw online. The voiceover of Mary's letter in the beginning hooked me to the game. The entire story had some mystery around it that I wanted to see what would happen next, which carried me throughout the game. The atmosphere was a cherry on top. The remake did a fantastic job of modernising the game. What pissed me off, however, was the puzzles. There were endless amounts of puzzles. Everytime I reach a new place and see a machine covered in cloth, I would go "Ah shit I'd be spending the next 30 minutes running around this map collecting shit to place in this machine". The combat was really fun. Blasting off mannequins and nurses with the shotgun was satisfying.

Spoilers

After finishing the game, I didnt feel anything. But only after pondering for some time did it really hit me. I was wondering why would James kill Mary. We were conditioned to view James as the good guy protagonist. Would I do the same if I were in his place? I began combing through youtube of character studies of each character, found several things that I missed. Maybe I am dumb, but I didnt even realise that the hot nurses were all symbols of James' sexual frustration. I still take a detour and watch those sick edits of Silent hill 2 whenever it pops up in my youtube. Not much games have impressed me with this quality of writing.

Few titles in gaming history carry the same weight as Silent Hill 2. Often regarded as one of the most haunting and introspective entries in the survival horror genre, it’s a game that defined what video games could achieve in terms of storytelling, atmosphere, and emotional depth. With its remake, the developers have undertaken an enormous challenge: to bring a classic to modern audiences while staying faithful to what made it iconic. Fortunately, they’ve succeeded spectacularly.

At its core, the Silent Hill 2 Remake understands that the spirit of the original is sacred. Rather than injecting contemporary values, ideology, or commentary on current political climates, the developers focused on preserving the timeless, universal themes of guilt, grief, and psychological torment. This approach is key to what makes the remake not only a tribute but an extension of the original’s legacy. It taps deeply into the nostalgia of longtime fans while still feeling accessible to newcomers.

Faithful Atmosphere and Spirit The hallmark of Silent Hill 2 has always been its atmosphere, and the remake captures this with reverence and precision. From the muted fog that swallows the town whole to the eerie silence broken only by unsettling sound cues, every moment feels drenched in dread. The sound design, in particular, is masterful. The minimalistic approach to audio, with its sparse yet sharp moments of sound, recalls the brilliance of the original while leveraging modern technology to make the experience even more immersive. This is not just about horror—it’s about creating a pervasive unease that lingers long after you put the controller down.

What’s remarkable is how the remake resists the temptation to overindulge in modern gaming tropes. There are no unnecessary jump scares, no over-the-top action sequences. Instead, the horror is psychological and restrained, relying on the player’s imagination and subtle cues. This restraint is a hallmark of the original and remains a defining feature in the remake. The atmosphere is not just recreated—it’s enhanced.

Mechanics: Old Meets New Another area where the remake shines is in its gameplay. Faithful to the original mechanics, it retains the deliberate pacing and tension that defined the classic survival horror experience. However, these mechanics have been updated with just enough modern polish to make them feel intuitive and fluid. Movement, combat, and camera controls are smoother and more responsive, making the game more accessible without losing the weight and deliberation that create tension.

This balance is crucial. By respecting the core gameplay structure while refining it for contemporary audiences, the developers have managed to bridge the gap between nostalgia and innovation. The result is a game that feels timeless—a classic brought into the modern era without sacrificing its identity.

A Remake Done Right The Silent Hill 2 Remake sets a gold standard for how remakes should be approached. It’s a faithful reimagining that respects its source material without being shackled by it. It avoids the pitfall of trying to modernize the narrative or infuse it with themes that distract from the original’s intent. Instead, it taps into the deep well of nostalgia while offering an updated experience that feels fresh and engaging.

The respect for the original’s spirit, combined with thoughtful updates to gameplay and visuals, makes this a remake done right. Fans of the original will find themselves transported back to the foggy streets of Silent Hill, while newcomers will experience what makes this game a masterpiece.

In an era where remakes often attempt to reinvent rather than revere, Silent Hill 2 reminds us why the original was a classic in the first place. This is not just a game—it’s a love letter to one of gaming’s most revered titles, and it deserves to be played by anyone who loves survival horror.

I finished the remake a few weeks ago but wanted to let it all settle in before I reflected on it for a review. I’ve been playing the SH series since the first one was released. I had part 2 on preorder (on hold) at my local game store as a teen and remember being super excited to go pick it up. It instantly became one of my favorite games. Over the years I’ve played it countless times. When this remake was announced I was filled with joy. I had faith in the team behind it because I played “The Medium” some time ago and i really enjoyed it, in fact, it’s a personal favorite now as well. But I knew if the remake fell short somewhat I would still be happy getting to revisit one of my favorite gaming experiences in this modern era. And let me tell you, I wasn’t the least bit disappointed. What Bloober Team has done with this project is truly commendable. They managed to retain all of the magic of the original and apply new techniques and mechanics to make it accessible to new audiences and the familiar players as well. I’m blown away by it and like the original, I plan to spend a lot of time in this town. What a time to be alive.

For this review for Silent Hill 2 I’m going to use a new theory that I’ve developed of the Three Ms: Mental, Mechanical, and eMotional. I believe that these are the three ways that video games engage us, but I also think they’re the three kinds of challenges in gaming.

Let’s get to it.

Mental

Silent Hill 2 has a lot of puzzles. Of course it does, it’s a survival horror game, that’s one of the main things they do. You can adjust the puzzle difficulty, though. I played on standard, and honestly, I’m not super sure what changes about the puzzles, but I didn’t encounter anything like the Bird Puzzle in Silent Hill 1 in this game. I found the puzzles pretty fun. Dissecting a note to get a specific number was fun and the juice puzzle is so simple that it’s kind of brilliant. The other type of mental engagement in this game is navigation. In the completion screen it was mentioned that I looked at the map some 800 times, which I would believe. The early apartments section of the game is the most complicated area. Finding your way around there and opening up new paths is a huge part of it.

Mechanical

I played some of Silent Hill Homecoming back in the day, and that game wasn’t great, so I was kind of shocked to see a dodge move return to Silent Hill. The combat in this game is surprisingly thrilling. Starting with just the board with a nail in it, and fighting the Lying Figure enemies helps you get a grasp on the combat early on. Then the Mannequins ramp things up by dodging YOUR attacks, and well, fighting them is basically a way more disturbing version of Punch Out. When I started encountering the Nurses I was smart enough to start using the guns more often, but I was still so stingy with bullets I would get tagged constantly trying to box a mannequin.

One thing I think slightly lets the combat down is that I always knew how many hits it would take to down an enemy. Against a Lying Figure, I could do a three hit combo, dodge its attack, and then knock it down with the next swing. Mannequins take three pistol shots to down. I saw behind the curtain a bit in that regard.

Still though, the hits are so meaty, and the intensity really sells the horror of the situation. The boss fights are good in this regard, too; my favorite being the battle with Abstract Daddy. The terror of that thing barreling down on me as the apartment crumbled around us was spectacular.

Emotional

Here we go, the big one. Like most Silent Hill fans, I haven’t played Silent Hill 2, but I know a lot about it. If there were an award for “Game that has the most video essays about it” I think SH2 would have a shot at it. That said, I kinda knew the story going in, but it hit me harder than it ever did secondhand. Maybe it’s because I too am a married man, and all the while I was thinking what I would do if something happened to my wife, but James’ voice actor Luke Roberts fills his dialogue with pathos, and the animations convey his sadness in such a subtle way. One of my favorite moments early on is where James listens to a jukebox in a bar, a haunting reminder of how the town uses memories to attack you. When the game first started, I took a walk down to Silent Hill and I chose to walk the entire way, even though the tool tip for the spring button came up. I walked for a significant part of the game, taking in the atmosphere, the creepy sounds, and the scares.

This is an intense game and it is VERY scary. I took frequent breaks while playing to decompress, but I would quickly be back to it.

I’ve never played any of Bloober Team’s other games, but this one has kind of nailed it. I don’t consider this as much oa “remake” as I do a “translation.” Konami has kept this series from us for years, and Bloober has done what they can to translate this story into our modern mechanics. This is one of the best games of the year.

Bloober Team didn't change all that much from the original, but what little they did change and add works great alongside what was left untouched.

I do wish the monsters were more visually interesting, as most of their models and textures are not very detailed. Music is good, as expected, but I wanted to hear it a little more of it during the game.

Still, Silent Hill 2 Remake goes straight alongside the Resident Evil 2 and 4 remakes as the best horror game remakes of recent history.

TOO MANY boring ENIGMAS, but really TOO MANY, a constant back and forth, if I hadn't checked the solutions on youtube, I probably would have just closed the game. Without ever opening it again.

I didn't like the story as much.... But mostly because I saw on youtube that it has weird endings....? Meaningless...? SPOILER:

-The ending of a dog holding a headphone? -The ufo?

-The fact that in the ‘original’ story he was trying to find his missing wife, but he didn't even remember that he had killed his wife, doesn't make sense.

He had to find out by seeing it in a video tape....? xD Maybe I missed the point of the story, but in a nutshell, it doesn't deserve more than 2 stars for me, this game.

I wanted to complete it, just to try and change my mind, but nothing. Despite having completed it my opinion is the same. 2 Stars.

While music and atmosphere is phenomenal, the things I was initially worried about going from the original to remake turned out to be present. The original's dialogue is undoubtedly goofy, uncanny, and sometimes downright funny. But in my opinion, that's part of the charm. In the same way I was disappointed that RE4R's dialogue was shifted to be more serious as opposed to the original's campy nature, I have the same issue here. In a game like this, the dialogue being more serious isn't bad, and at times it's better while still being awkward at times, but I'm just extremely partial to the original. The new stuff they added is fine, them being far more direct about its themes and implications is also fine, but I think I will still implore people to play the original first. In the end, to me it's personal preference. I'm happy Bloober managed to deliver what is without a doubt the best game they've done and even happier more people got to experience this game.

I'm a little bit disappointed that the delivery of the full letter at the end was nowhere near as impactful as the original but I felt that was always going to be the case for me no matter what.

The first half of the game was pretty good. Locations were interesting to explore, puzzles were good, you were getting more and more dangerous enemies. At the hospital location, which is about half of the game, you get the second ranged weapon and you get the most dangerous enemy in the game (nurse). But after that you get like 1 new enemy (excluding bosses) in the whole second half of the game, and that enemy is pretty weak. You get a third ranged weapon, but you don't really need it, as there are no new dangerous enemies. Locations became less interesting (though I liked the prison and the lake apartment locations), and there also were less puzzles.

I've put a good amount of time into the game and I can say I'm genuinely surprised at how well this game has been going so far. The atmosphere is great and the music is phenomenal. Unfortunately, the farther I get, the more I come to loathe the combat of this game. The minute I got the pistol, the horror element of encountering and engaging enemies completely flew out the window as the game turns into RE4 where you simply shoot the knee and finish off with melee. This would be FINE, but it also baffles just how much the game forces you to engage with its awful combat system. Often times you'll end up in rooms with one enemy only to realize there were two or even three more hiding in a corner. Unlike the original, it's almost never feasible to try and sneak around enemies as they are very persistent, on top of having the very cool thing where their melee attacks will home in on you and close the gap. Upon encountering the nurses, the game also practically tells you that melee is nearly useless as even on Standard, enemies take so much punishment from your pipe before going down. And it's certainly not feasible to even attempt melee combat with two or more enemies.

Combat in the original was also not good and very awkward but very much avoidable. James is not a fighter, and that's reflected in how awkward it is anytime you had to interact with the original game's combat system. Here, you're basically punishing yourself by not going in guns blazing and it honestly just takes me out of the experience. It's quite disappointing because just about everything else except the combat is done exceedingly well and I still do like the game alot, but I guess when it comes to modernizing a game you need to put emphasis on the action portions.
