Doing an evil run as The Dark Urge is honestly stomach churning. I thought I could take it, I thought it would just be simple roleplaying. But it so much worse than I thought possible. I appreciate that it's possible, but boy is it hard to love being this evil.

I just killed two of my favourite characters in the game, and I'm not handling it well. I know they are just data within a game, but it's still awful. And back-to-back too, like the game was designed to punish me for my terrible choices.

It is downright mean and deeply unjust that Alfira can only join your camp if you are The Dark Urge. Why couldn't she come to camp when I was a bard? And what you do is even worse.

I didn't really have Astarion join me for a lot of my first two playthroughs, mostly because I was proficient enough at lock-picking (and stealing as a bard in my second play through, because my druid wouldn't steal the first time around). Now that I'm playing in Tactician, I really see the value of a rogue. Attacking enemies from the shadows and consistently gaining advantage via surprise really is the way to go!

You know you have something magical when you've already put hundreds of hours into multiple single-player, story driven campaigns, and you still want to put hundreds more without tiring. And with my bard's story complete, that's my second play through done. On to the Dark Urge storyline next!

I’m very close to pulling the trigger on this. Question is do I buy the:

  • PS5 version (the easy no brainer no hassle option)

Or

  • Steam version, which I’d be able to play mainly on Steamdeck (+/- official dock) and also potentially on my 13” M2 MacBook Air.

….I’m in a state of analysis paralysis!

One of the biggest downsides of GeForce Now is that it occasionally fails to upload your game saves to Steam Cloud. Yesterday I popped in for a moment over lunch when I was away from home, and registered a save. Today I can't access that save on my computer or Steam Deck because it wasn't uploaded. And, as a nice bonus, GeForce now is patching the game and BG3 won't be available for a few hours, so I can't log in to force the upload. Wonderful way to start my long weekend!

For god's sake, I thought they fixed the Felogyr quest, because the quest log now properly updates when I reach the top floor. However, the entire city aggros me when I go through with the quest, so it's definitely still bugged. I think I'm permanently abandoning this quest for all future play throughs.

Both times I arrived at Baldur's Gate I suddenly felt deeply overwhelmed. Both times I arrived at Baldur's Gate I suddenly felt deeply overwhelmed. Not in a true sense that relates to a real desire to physically stop playing, but in the sense that I empathize with a character that must be in sudden awe of a city space that feels multitudes more intimidating than all the spaces I've travelled in-game prior to this point. Baldur's Gate is literally awesome in the historical sense of the word: daunting and inspiring fear and apprehension. I feel small, and unable to plot where I should go first. It's truly, and wonderfully, intimidating.

I'm in a big pickle! Second playthrough is going swell, I'm being evil, which so far has included betraying the druids and tieflings to Minthara, siding with Nere against the gnomes and dwarves, and betraying Last Light Inn. I'm in a big pickle! Second playthrough is going swell, I'm being evil, which so far has included betraying the druids and tieflings to Minthara, siding with Nere against the gnomes and dwarves, and betraying Last Light Inn. But I've run into my most difficult choice, which is to murder or not to murder a companion as the Dark Urge. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to succumb to my dark urges and trim my camp headcount by one (Sorry, Lae'zel), but not at the cost of all my other companions turning on me! I'm really enjoying having Astarion and Shadowheart as my dastardly evil minions, after all. Plus I'm having a hard time beating them 2v1, even if I wanted to get rid of them. Agh, decisions!

Given Grouvee is now my personal BG3 blog, it might be surprising to anyone following along that I nearly passed this game over. Not for lack of interest, but because I wasn’t sure I was in the mood for this type of cRPG at the exact moment is was officially launching. I’m glad I was wrong and succumbed to curiosity, because I honestly think this is the first game since Chrono Trigger that compels me to play every permutation possible, to experience every angle and ending to the story.

Even my beloved Mass Effect, a game I replayed twice after my first play-through didn’t feel quite like BG3 does to me. To this day I still haven’t played as a soldier in Mass Effect but I feel like I want to play BG3 as ever class, sub-class and even every multi-class option I can think of.

This game feels like an obsession and I’m starting to wonder if I should bother picking up any other new games this Fall-Winter while that obsession is going strong. If I buy Super Mario Wonder or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, will I even bother playing them?

I still haven’t played Goodbye Volcano High, a game I was dying to play, not because I don’t want to but because I can’t tear myself away from BG3. And Mineko’s Night Market came out two days ago, and I’ve been excited about that for the better half of a decade, but I feel like I can’t tear myself away from BG3. I also bought Cocoon and don't know when I'll get to it.

I promised myself I’d pause for other games between my first and second play-through, but I didn’t. It seems Larian owns my soul at this point.

I had no idea that Shadowheart changes her hair colour when she rejects Shar, because she didn't do that during my first play-through because of the portal bug preventing the continuation of Aylin and Isobel's story intersection with Shadowheart's own.

I don’t know if you can do this as any class other than Bard (I’m assuming not) but if you find Alfira after the battle at Moonrise you can play a duet with her. God I love this game.

Yessss, I didn’t get locked out of the story scenes with Aylin and Isobel. Either Larian patched it or sending my summons away worked.
