Sonic returns for a second outing on the Game Boy Advance. Once again, Sonic is called upon to save the world from the evil Dr. Eggman. On this occasion, Sonic is joined by friends Tails, Knuckles and Cream the Rabbit, the latest addition to the Sonic team. Each comes with a set of unique moves, allowing you to reach certain areas through-out the levels. However, unlike Sonic Advance, you must complete the game as Sonic to unlock the other characters. Chaos Emeralds and Special Rings litter the stages. To collect the emeralds (transforming Sonic into Super Sonic for the final battle with Dr. Eggman), you must find the special rings hidden in each stage to unlock the bonus stage. Complete the bonus stage and the emerald is yours. You'll also get the chance to collect and raise chaos, and trade them over to Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on GameCube, through the use of the GBA/GC link cable. Read less

The level design gets pretty dickish later on, and the final boss rush is an absolute slog, but it's a good enough time as long as you don't go for the true ending. If you go for the Special Rings and Chaos Emeralds/true final boss, you're in for a pretty miserable time. It's a 2 star game going for 100%, …

If you go for the Special Rings and Chaos Emeralds/true final boss, you're in for a pretty miserable time. It's a 2 star game going for 100%, but if you just sit down and casually play through a character you like, it's a 3-star game.

Gttgfst

A huge step down from Advance 1. Advance 2 really pushes the boundaries of how fast you can make sonic move in 2d but completely misses the finer points of what made the momentum base platforming so good. Countless bottomless pits, forcing you to speed through at a crazy pace then punishing you for not know what's ahead. This game …

This game really embodies all the unfair criticisms of classic sonic.

A good sonic level is beatable on your first try but you master it with practice, these levels are filled to the brim with insta death gotcha traps that just make it unfun to play.

Unfortunately I'm dropping it without even finishing the main campaign as every level just gets worse than the last...

Worse Than I Expected

Screenshot after defeating an early boss in Sonic Advance 2

I really enjoyed Sonic Advance when I finally replayed it, so I was pretty disappointed by Sonic Advance 2. It's pretty mindless "go right to win" fun for the first four zones, then a frustrating game of "avoid the bottomless pits" for the rest.

(I'd write more, but @Reset_Tears already captured how I felt in her status update from a …

Over the years I've heard folks say Sonic games are just "run right to win," which is nonsense of course... but maybe they were all just playing Sonic Advance 2. Over the years I've heard folks say Sonic games are just "run right to win," which is nonsense of course... but maybe they were all just playing Sonic Advance 2. Because, yeah, you run right, and you win. I know many folks call this one their favorite of the Sonic Advance trilogy, but I just didn't care for it. The levels are super easy, save for some of the bosses.

Getting the Chaos Emeralds in this game is complete nonsense. They designed the levels to be for speeding through as fast as possible, but then say you gotta collect a bunch of special emblems hidden all over the place. Are they just trolling us, or what? The special stages are ass, so maybe they were. I did like some of the tunes in this game though, and the "music world" level is definitely one of the more unique ones for 2D Sonic games.
