This is the most overrated junk. Trash rogue game based solely on RNG with a lot of fluff like tarot cards to make it seem like it's strategy. There is no skill to this game whatsoever. This type of mind numbing time waste should be restricted to mobile gaming.

Balatro (PS5)

I have never quite played a rouge-like this addicting before. Part of my inability to get into roguelikes has been the new run each time aspect of it. This game helped me overcome those barriers to entry. The game's reliance on skill and knowledge as opposed to perma unlocks to make the game easier meant that it felt like I was improving not my tools and that made it addictive to play in the way a competitive multiplayer game is. There is a lot of content and builds to play around with truly making every run feel unique. Unlike other roguelikes I have played the runs take 20 minutes tops which makes it easy to pick up and play, and not as frustrating to end a run. Considering that this was made by one person it is extremely impressive just how much content and style is pumped into this game. I have loved every second I have played this game and will continue to pump hours into this game as I go for 100% completion!

A Masterful Deckbuilder

Balatro is like Slay the Spire, but better. Where a run in Slay the Spire could feel like dumping a ton of time into a run only to get screwed over by an inopportune draw, Balatro keeps you in it until the bitter end. There's always a pivot. Every once in a while you'll get hit with some bad draws, …

Where a run in Slay the Spire could feel like dumping a ton of time into a run only to get screwed over by an inopportune draw, Balatro keeps you in it until the bitter end. There's always a pivot. Every once in a while you'll get hit with some bad draws, but those sink the run within the first two rounds. The gameplay just feels fantastic. Despite being a "one more run" style game, this one is remarkably easy to put down once you've had enough, and just as easy to pick back up when you have a few minutes to kill.

This game kept getting mentioned on various podcasts I listen to and then showed up on the game of the year contender list so I decided to give it a try. I am not usually a big fan of Card based games, but I am a fan of rougelike style games and poker.

It took me a few minutes to get into it, but once you get into the flow and understand the mechanics, this game is bizarrely addictive. It’s a really simple mechanic and idea done exceptionally well and everything about it is very stylish. I love the fact that it also isn’t relying on any micro transactions and has no actual gambling elements in it beyond the random chance that is associated with your deck and the jokers you were using, etc.

I never install games on my phone, but when I was in a pinch waiting for something, I redeemed a free trial on Apple Arcade and downloaded it immediately and it’s suddenly also found its way onto my iPad as well. I suspect that this will be one of those games that just lives on my devices and is ready to go when I have some downtime to avoid mindless Internet browsing.

I do hope this actually wins game of the year. It would be a well-deserved accomplishment for a really really fantastic game from a Canadian solo developer!

Run-based / Roguelite / Roguelike / whatever you want to call it is pretty common these days. Balatro is another one of those with its unique twist being that you make runs starting with a traditional 52-card deck, playing poker hands to try and achieve score thresholds. Pretty simple concept but there are a ton of additional cards and modifiers that add plenty of complexity make every run pretty different. If you like run-based games it's on the upper end in terms of design and polish. Just know that anyone else watching you play is going to be bored to tears as its not much of a spectator game. My daughter asked me "why is this fun?" this morning and I didn't know how to explain it to her... which is fine. As long as I am actually having fun I don't have to explain shit to anyone.

NOTE: Played on the Switch. Runs totally fine without any slowdown or performance lag. Runs seem to autosave as I've had my kids close out the game while suspended to play Smash Brothers and I was able to reload and play later.
