Picked Balatro up and have zero regrets. What a fun game. I never really considered card games, or card based games, as something worth spending gaming time on until a friend convinced me to try Inscryption. While just about every moment of that game is brilliant, it's the core gameplay loop of the card game itself that I stuck around for (Kaycee's Mod). I remember searching for similar games once I'd quenched the thirst I had with that game. I didn't really find anything appealing.
Balatro would have done it, there's no doubt. I love that you can spend as many hours as you want on it, or as little as 60 seconds. It's a good thing I got it on PS5 and not phone because I'd probably never look up from my screen. Though, I do need to make a trip to the DMV soon...what better way to pass the time in line?
Really though: it's good that I picked this up after breaking myself of hunting for trophies. Balatro's trophy list is challenging and requires a great deal of both time and luck. I don't mind dumping hundreds of hours into a game, but I think I wouldn't really be able to have the pure joy and fun that comes with a game like this if I had made the decision to go for the platinum.
I don't know how much they can expand on it, but it would be cool to see what else they can do with it. I think I've only played like 2 hours at this point so I'm really just scratching the surface. I just learned that you can change the order of your Jokers. Hell, I just learned that you can speed the game up. I probably won't, though. I enjoy the animations.
I think this will be one of those rare games that I come back to time and time again since there's really no end to it.
