Fate/Samurai Remnant is a mix of action and story, and for the most part I think those two elements work well together.
I’m really not a big fan of the Dynasty Warriors style of games. While it’s clear a lot of love went into the gameplay systems such as skills, progression, and various mechanics, it still feels a bit plain despite everything they layered on top. Outside of the main story battles, many encounters ended up feeling like a chore, and I often found myself rushing through them just to get back to the narrative segments.
Design-wise, the game clearly has a lot of love put into it. There are many small details, lots of little objects scattered around the environments, and the character designs themselves are beautiful. However, this isn’t always matched by the graphical presentation, which can feel a bit… rusty at times. I don’t usually mind graphics that much, but given the Fate series’ strong visual identity, I did expect something a little more polished and less rough around the edges.
That said, the music is amazing. Some of the tracks will genuinely stay with me for a long time.

As for the story, I’m a huge Fate fan, so I was very entertained overall. It doesn’t connect too strongly to the original Fate story beyond some cameos and references, but it definitely captures the same kind of dynamics seen throughout the Nasuverse. I was especially invested in the Iori/Saber dynamic, as well as Chiemon/Lancer. Other characters also had their moments to shine, such as Dorothea, Rogue Saber,
I do feel, however, that some questions were left unanswered, or answered too vaguely, such as why t
Regarding the three endings:
Finished the first DLC. I was wrong - each route takes about 30 minutes. They're really repetitive though. It's just the same basic story but you fight as different people.
Gil is not as OP as he should be and kind of sucks against single targets. Ibuki-Douji is alright, I'm just not a fan of playing large characters. Makes it hard to see what's going on. They did also make Rider playable.
I've uninstalled the game for now but will revisit it down the road once the rest of the DLC is out.
Finished the other 2 endings.
Entreat the Darkness was not at all what I was expecting. I don't really know i was expecting, but that certainly wasn't it. Shortest and easiest ending, but also the least satisfying.
Ray of Light felt more like the true ending. Going after Assassin seems like it was the smarter choice based on how things turn out after each option in the split.
Also started the DLC and did Saber's route. It's certainly nothing amazing as of yet and I'm not sure if it was worth $15. Saber's route is maybe 20 minutes on easy and the story is rather shallow. But there's 6 other routes still to do. Will have to make a final determination after I finish them all and see how much fun playing as Gil and Ibuki is.
Finished my first playthrough of this. Like most things there were moments where I questioned what the writer's were thinking and thought the MC was an incompetent idiot, but overall it's still good. The plot is chaotic like most Fate plots are. Because I chose to play on the default difficult instead of lowering like I usually do, some of the fights were really intense.
I started a second playthrough because I want to at least see all the Digressions. I'll probably get another ending or two as well. I'm not sure if I'll end up going for the platinum though. There's a trophy for maxing out the workshop and getting the materials for that may be too grindy. We'll see.
The first piece of DLC came out recently too, which I want to try. It has new story with a bunch of the characters and adds Ibuki Douji. I'm not super into Ibuki, but she's voiced by Aoi Yuuki and it just means more fun chaotic Fate nonsense.
I am loving this game.
I love the absurdity of the Fate universe in general with all its Heroic Spirits and Holy Grail wars. There's something satisfying about the characters being (often times weird) interpretations of historic people rather than just completely made-up. It's kind of an homage to human history and Fate does not discriminate on when and where it pulls its heroes from. Saying who shows up would be spoiler and I don't know who everyone is yet anyway, but there are at least 15 quite varied Servants running around. And my boy Gil shows up to call everyone mongrels!
I'm also a big fan of musou style gameplay which is what's at the core of this combat system. It is however a fair bit deeper, especially when you have to fight large monsters and Servants. There's more of a focus on dodging and timing your hits in those situations. You've also got things like multiple stances, combo attacks with Servants, playing as the Servants themselves, magic, etc. So I get to have the fun of hack and slash without it just always being a button mashing frenzy. I'm also playing on the default difficulty instead of the easier ones like I usually do. Sometimes I'm tempted to turn it down for Servant fights just because they take so long sometimes, but I haven't yet. Fighting Heroic Spirits shouldn't be a walk in the park generally speaking.
I also find it amusing that almost every area in Edo has little side quests to pet a certain number of cats and dogs. The fighting can wait - this fluffy boy needs a tummy rub.
