Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, with world-building contributions from novelist George R. R. Martin, the game features an expansive open world called the Lands Between. Players assume the role of a customisable character known as the Tarnished, who must explore this world, battle formidable enemies, and seek to restore the Elden Ring to become the Elden Lord. The game builds on the challenging gameplay mechanics familiar from the Dark Souls series but introduces a more open-ended structure with vast exploration, dynamic weather, and a day-night cycle. It offers deep lore, complex characters, and an interconnected world filled with secrets, dungeons, and powerful bosses. Read less

Yes, guides helped for NPC quests and other stuff as a first time player, getting it all done (100% completion) without any help would have been nearly impossible, but, worth it. You see, while the story feels incomplete, the philosophy of the game requires of it to be like that (at least that is what I could make sense of from Miyazaki's statements) I would have preferred a more thorough lore but I'm not complaining for this, I can live with the feeling on its own. Excited for NG+

Note: I played a fair amount of this on Steam Deck, and it runs so well on that device.

I won't go into too much detail as I can't really say anything others haven't already said. The world was massive and took me 150 hours to explore, and while I was super ready to be done with it, it stayed interesting and satisfying the whole time. I still have to go back and finish Haligtree, but I explored other areas pretty thoroughly and it was always rewarding to explore the larger areas. Combat is super satisfying and -- from what I've heard anyway, as I've only done one build -- incredibly versatile.

My only gripes about this game:

  • This is my 3rd completed From game and I'm a decent way into Bloodborne, and I've always had an issue with how the "difficult" boss fights just come down to precise memorization of their move sets. Sekiro was as close as it can get to taking this formula and making it more skill-based, but when it boils down to it, getting "good" in these games is just playing the fight repeatedly until you can effectively parry or dodge your way through to dealing enough damage.
  • I strongly dislike the environmental storytelling aspect of From games. You have to be a detective and piece together clues, and in Elden Ring those clues are few and far between so you have to keep notes, have an incredible memory, or just read about it online. All of those are shitty, IMO. Just tell me the f***ing story.
  • The catacombs and other sort of cave areas were the most formulaic and I always dreaded them. It was always super satisfying to finish one and finally get out into the fresh air again.
  • The music in this game was a big missed opportunity. The boss battles seem to consistently have epic music, but when you're out exploring it's just forgettable, atmospheric stuff. Besides the theme song, I can't sing you any tunes from the game. Contrasted against other RPGs -- or just great games in general -- the best of the best always have some earworms you can't get out of your head. I personally really love game music and the lack of it here left a big void that I've had to fill with alcohol.

Overall I think this game is the absolute peak of the FromSoft formula and the one From game you should show people if you only have one to show. But with this game, the formula is REALLY played out, and it's time to move on and introduce new mechanics. Or continue to, anyway, as they have clearly been trying new things with Sekiro and some of the co-op stuff.

Elden Ring (PS5)

Honestly, I picked this game up due to a desire to understand... the cacophonous hype, I guess. I haven't played through much of FromSoftware's catalogue before now. I think I dropped between ten and fifteen hours into the first Dark Souls, and it just never came -close- to clicking with me. I found it boring, plodding, and more aggravating than anything. I understood what it was asking of me, but I did not feel ever like my patience was rewarded—not in the encounters, and certainly not in the world or story, such as it is. I killed a handful of bosses but just... never felt any desire to continue.

So yeah, I came to Elden Ring with a great many reservations, but I also wanted to understand just why it is that this game has taken hold of so many, journalists and friends alike.

A few things right off the bat:

-The platforming is -awful-. Seriously, whoever designed the actual platforming (not the artistic design) of the Haligtree and the Tower of Caelid deserve to be launched into the sun.

-While the lore is interesting, the actual storytelling is weak. Good voice acting and dialogue, sure, but it was picking apart this world that drew me in and almost nothing to do with the story being told. When it comes to games, I prefer something more authored and less diagetic (which isn't the case when reading books or watching films/TV—something about the time commitment involved in gaming makes me want to fight less for my narratives).

-Some of the difficulty spikes truly are infuriating. And as such, I strongly dispute the popular notion that Malenia is the most difficult fight. She can't hold a candle to the rage I felt repeatedly beating my head against the Death Rite Bird in the Consecrated Snowfield or the Bell Bearing Knight in Caelid. Or most of the Putrid Avatars, for that matter.

-Fuck whoever decided that pressing in L3 should get rid of Torrent—I did that SO MANY TIMES when I absolutely did not intend to do so.

Those caveats aside... I am shocked at how much I adored this game. It went from zero to obsession in practically no time at all. I started the game on September 12, and by October 16, upon beating it and -every- possible boss, and finishing pretty much every quest but Hyetta's (because I didn't want to accidentally lock myself into the Frenzied Flame ending), I'd logged 158 hours with my level 195 bleed-heavy samurai (rocking fully powered-up versions of the Moonveil in one hand and the Hand of Malenia in the other).

Is it perfect? Lord no—see the above grievances. But I was continuously fascinated (and disturbed) by the world, the extremely fucked-up and at times strikingly beautiful horror-ish art design, the constant reminders of the world that was... And the combat. While yes, some fights do feel—to use a term I haven't employed in this context since I was a child—"cheap," for the most part the sense of accomplishment felt when winning something once thought unwinnable was like nothing else.

While I don't see myself giving Dark Souls another chance anytime soon, nor do I care that much about Sekiro (though I am curious about Bloodborne), Elden Ring has helped me understand just what it is about these games that is so appealing. I'm not a big risk taker—I played conservatively and spent large chunks of time levelling up with the giants behind the Warmaster's Shack in Limgrave and, later in the game, the bald cartwheeling assholes lining the cliffside by the Palace Approach Ledge Road site of grace—but the sense of terror that I felt going into every fight... it was exhilarating.

I don't know if I'd play it again to get the other endings (I don't give a shit about trophies or achievements), but I absolutely would give a sequel a shot. Because games this epic in scope and feel just do not come along that often.

Will play it again in the future.

The worst downside: lack of a log. It was really hard to follow on the side quests and NPCs. It would be great to know who's where and what we need to do.

Definitely recommend (if you like that kind of gaming, ofc. If you don't it's okay as well! :) )

I can't do justice to Elden Ring with my review but it builds upon the trend that Breath of the Wild started and what I hope becomes a standard for Open World games.

The game is filled with meaningful content, not just random copy pasted side quests to complete to give sense that you got your money's worth. You go left, there is something to discover, you go right, there is something to fight, you go down there is a secret, you go up there is a whole new area. There is no wrong way to go on this game no matter what you do you are always engaged with the game.

The side quests are another area I am blown away, they are so integral to the game and so meaningful that it is hard to tell them apart from the main story game. This is how side quests should be done, they are not an after thought, they are not "side" they are integral to the main story and its pieces are so high quality that they can be confused for the main story.

While From Software is known for their hard games there is such a beauty on how difficulty is handled on Elden Ring, there are in game things you can do to make things easier or more difficult: Game is too hard? Use Spirit Summons. Still too hard? summon a friend. Still too hard? Maybe this fight summon an NPC. Still too hard? maybe there is an item to make it easier? Still too hard? Try a different weapon that is good against the boss and exploits its weakness. Still to hard? go somewhere else, explore, level up and come back when you are stronger. And the opposite applies if players find it way too easy.

you are never truly stuck in the game because you can't get pass some area. there is always something that allows the player to make the game easier.

Other games should take note, rather than having a set difficulty for the entire game, allow the player to adjust it as they play through game mechanics.

Last but not least, the art direction of this game is phenomenal! the vistas, the areas, the enemies, there is always something to make stop and be like "wow this looks great!" Very few games make me wanna take screenshots of what I am seeing, I took plenty of screenshots on this one!

Overall the game is extremely well designed and it is an absolute blast to play beginning to end and I do hope that it sets a new standard in gameplay and open world design in the industry

The open world in this game is ground-breaking in it's ability to both encourage and reward exploration. I lost track of the number of times I said to myself "I wonder how I get to there?". No other open world I have played in comes close.

The dungeons are classic FromSoft dungeons, not too much to say - on a par with DS3.

Ashes of war / weapon arts, the "stagger" system, dual wielding and guard counters all excellent additions to the combat formula. Still not as good as Sekiro combat but much more interesting that other souls games.

Bosses sometimes incredibly hard, bordering on "unfair". I'm fine with target tracking, input reading, delayed attacks and long combos, but I feel like there are certain "rules" we have learned about bosses: a big AoE effect will have a big windup, a big AoE attack or a multi-move combo will leave a longer attack window than usual at the end, etc. Many of these conventions were violated which added a lot to the frustration of boss fights.

Of course, the counter to boss difficulty was Spirit Ashes, but for me this removed the uniqueness of the boss designs entirely. By the end, with Mimic Tear +10 (of course)., every boss fight was just: let Mimic get aggro, jump attack from behind a few times, rinse and repeat. I can barely remember some of these late-game boss fights, whereas the bosses from other FS games are etched into my memory forever.

Personally, I would have preferred better designed bosses with some limitations on summoning - only allowing spirit summons in the open world and/or for multi-boss battles, for example.

I understand that opinions differ, and nothing is stopping anyone from declining to use summons, but the end-game boss difficulty in that case would have been, for me, punishingly un-fun and I would still be trying to beat Melenia to this day.

Overall - an astonishing and unforgettable game which sets a new benchmark for AAA games. Not perfect, but that just means I can look forward to the next FS release.

I think my current ranking of the FS titles I have played would be:

DS1 (remastered)

Elden Ring

DS3

Bloodborne

Sekiro

Demons Souls (remastered)

As a big fun of From Software games i have beaten Demon Souls, Dark Souls 1-3 and Sekiro several times, and long waited Elden Ring was no exception. This game is terribly vast, full of content and even addictive. Its pretty much obvious GOTY, partly for the reason of abscence of big releases in this year. Main things i like about this game are:

  1. Awesome aesthetics, art design is the best that Souls-like games ever had. Locations, cinematics and bossfights when you see them for a first time are breathtaking. Art team did the magnicifent job making such a beautiful game even with 2016 year Dark souls 3 engine. Also it has the best main menu they ever did in my opinion. It really makes you feel that you won't regret spending money on it, before you even start playing.
  2. Many handy features were added in this game like quick item cast from Esc menu, finally removed covenants (which were pretty cool mechanics) but still severely restricked pvp in Souls, and most likely thats why they were removed. Lvl up, potion managment and weapon enchantment at lost grace (aka bonfire) are also one of my favorite things, which make playing more comfortable.
  3. Combat changes are also pretty good in this game. I really like the guard counter, huge variety of weapon arts which can be changed, so you are not forced to use a single weapon for a specific weapon art. Combining of miracles and pyromancies, vigor and vitality is also logical. Spirit ashes are also big + for new players which will undoubtably struggle while traversing the lands between.

But, unforunately i have to disagree with huge amount of game journalists and players saying that Elden Ring is 10/10 perfect. It clearly has big drawbacks: Open world isn't that open. There are too much cliffs that force you to reach destination with only 1 or 2 routes. Fall damage system is weird, and it's really hard to understand where you die from falling and where you don't. Wind updrafts are rare on the map, i had to use them only 2 or 3 times in two of my playthroughs.

Some bosses are way too agressive and not fun to fight against (even minor ones like Misbegotten with big sword). Sometimes so much trash on screen happens with all fullscreen explosions and AoEs, if you compare it with Dark Souls 1-3(except DS 3 DLCs), its like Overwatch with CS GO. Super action packed, but much less strategy, there are many situations where you just have to panic roll everything, and i dont really like that direction they went.

By the way, as i mentioned before this game is big, and it's WAY too big to preserve in it Dak Souls style "no map, no journal, no helping and so on". Elden Ring shouldn't be oversimplified like some ubisoft game, but when you have over 150 bosses, big bunch of items, npc quest and secrets, there must be some way to track them without having 15 wiki tabs open. This formula worked for the Dark Souls sized games but not this one. I think if ER had more map marks than just sites of grace like it is done at Fextralife map, it would be just fine. Or if you could get sort of notebook item in your inventory which helped you with some sidequests and hidden locations without googling it like 95% if players do. I understand that it is mostly my fault that im so inattentional, but i did my best to do blind walkthrough without any guides or watching others play, and i just coudn't go out of Leyndell to fight Morgoth (i even got into sewers and found Mogh while was searching for his brother). This game can be way too complicated and non-intuitive. Also size of this world made it hard for developers to fill it with original content, filled with multiple same enemies (even main bosses) and questionable loot. For example you don't really need to bother with dungeons where you can get spirit ashes, they are much worse than Mimic Tears or any other legendary spirit ashes.

There are also some minor flaws Elden Ring has, like being unable to use map in combat, enemies hiting through walls, too much junk loot and etc, but the biggest issue on my mind is that lazy work they did with enemy AI. From Software clearly wanted to make this game less abusable by high range spell damage, so instead of making decent way of playing where you have to use your head and time spellcasts some foes like Malenia will just start dodging your projectiles (both spells and arrows/knives/bombs etc) before you even throw them. The only way to counter it is to use specific type of magic which they dont notice, it sounds dumb and it is what it is. Meanwhile sniper enemies like giant lobster and ancestor follower will always snipe without ever missing even when you are mounted. Also i dont really like inconstancy of some bosses (Malenia again, Maliketh) which sometimes just watch you punch them and do nothing, and other times just do 15 strikes non-stop, or fly around and shoot you with blackfire projectiles like Maliketh does. Comes out that you often need to get lucky with AI to pass the hard boss fights.

All those flaws should be mentioned so that developers learn their mistakes and fix them in this game and future ones. I say it because i care with all my heart about From Software games and dont want to become a biased fanboy like some Elden Ring players are. Anyway, i am grateful for all those hours i have spent in Lands Between to Miyadzaki and his team, for all different emotions i have felt when playing this game, obviously reccomend it.

I have never played a single souls games in my life.I am a very casual player who plays games in my off time from work and studies.Because of this i never gave the souls games a try but i always found the artisitic way the games are presented to be really good.I highly recommend everyone to try this game. This is the type of game were it cannot be described as a game but as an art.The way they have built this open world is just MAGNIFICIENT.The countless number of times i had a jaw dropping experience when discovering different parts of the maps and the boss designs and all is insane. This will truly remain as one of the best games to ever come out.A true masterpiece.

If u are worried about the difficulty just install a simple mod which brings the difficulty down to whatever u feel is right. This is the only issue i had with the game which was easily fixable.

Lisäksi pelissä on aivan liikaa tasohyppelykohtauksia siihen nähden, kuinka huonot tasohyppelymekaniikat pelissä on.

5/5 Erinomainen

Great game, but it's just not finished

This game was released unfinished. I'm a veteran to soulsborne games, and Sekiro and Bloodborne are some of my favorite titles ever, so know that I'm coming from a place of appreciation for this company and what they do when I say this; they should have at least delayed it until they finished up what they were working on. The amount of cut content which should not have been cut is astronomical, the late-game suffers drastically from re-used assets, imbalance, emptiness, etc while the early game flourishes with content. Some stories stop dead in their tracks and go nowhere, like Miquella. The gameplay is great, but in a game that makes you intrinsically care about its story so much, the story having huge threads that go nowhere is a big letdown. This will probably be a null and void argument once all the DLC for the game is out but it still needs to be said how incomplete the base game is.

More Grafted Than Golden

Feels like a masterpiece for the first half, but eventually you start to see how many pieces were shoved together, repeated again and again and again the later you get into the game, and a lot of area that feel under-baked.

It ends up being the best Souls game ever made but also it has the worst Souls game ever made inside of here.

it leads to an interesting position where I'm looking forward to playing the game again one day, only because I know all the parts of it that suck that I just never need to do again.

Also, some of the best art direction mixed with some of the worst technical. Game runs like shit on a PS5 for basically the entire game start to finish. Pretty hard to forgive that. It never runs well.
