Elden Ring is an action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, released in February 2022. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, with world-building contributions from novelist George R. R. Martin, the game features an expansive open world called the Lands Between. Players assume the role of a customisable character known as the Tarnished, who must explore this world, battle formidable enemies, and seek to restore the Elden Ring to become the Elden Lord. The game builds on the challenging gameplay mechanics familiar from the Dark Souls series but introduces a more open-ended structure with vast exploration, dynamic weather, and a day-night cycle. It offers deep lore, complex characters, and an interconnected world filled with secrets, dungeons, and powerful bosses. Read less

Me when Elden Ring launched: "Huh, a lot of people seem to like this game, perhaps I can check it out."

Me after a month of full Elden Ring content in twitter, Grouvee and podcasts: "I'm tired of this game; I will never touch it."

Quality tweet, and oh so true:

A little Easter egg for Elden Ring fans: Once you’ve beaten the game, you can go to bed at 9:30 instead of staying up until you can barely keep your eyes open.

I am convinced we have not reached the pinnacle of open world mapping in games and that the “best” way just hasn’t been invented (discovered?) yet. I appreciate the fairly minimalist design in Elden Ring with limited auto-mapped icons. At the same time the user dropped pins just doesn’t cut it. Only 100? I ran out in a single play session.

I really wish there was user note taking on the map; I remember one of the Zelda Games on the 3DS let you draw directly on it (Phantom Hourglass?). Assuming your handwriting wasn’t chicken scratch like mine it was a better but not perfect approach. Skyrim will automatically mark dungeons on the map you have completed, which I think would have been a big quality of life improvement here. But there is something missing for the over world. Discovering a part of the open world map is a key feature that shouldn’t change, and I am grateful there is less tower climbing these days. But we still need a better system for denoting where you have actually explored …StarCraft fog-of-war maybe?

Developers keep trying new things…

Having spent 10 hours, I can easily say I'm enjoying my time. However, each play session is maybe an hour long before responsibilities crash back in and move me elsewhere.

This step stone progress, while promising, is slowing down the experience to worrisome, bite size pieces. I fear that it'll begin to be a chore or bore. Limited time resources could be spent on something I could finish and hum at a higher rate of entertainment.

That being said, the Elden Ring... mine

After 100 hours I've somewhat run out of stuff to do in Elden Ring. All bigger bosses done, ending achieved, all areas explored to a moderate extent. I'm still thinking of getting a couple of weapons maxed out for a potential NG+ (if I wanna powerstance bleed and scarlet rot daggers for example) but we'll see. All in all, an …

I'm still thinking of getting a couple of weapons maxed out for a potential NG+ (if I wanna powerstance bleed and scarlet rot daggers for example) but we'll see. All in all, an amazing game with a staggering amount of worthwhile content but holy shit does it have harder bosses than the Dark Souls games did. Maybe it was just my build, my lack of skill and patience or my reluctance to use a more defensive or magic-heavy playstyle but the hardest bosses of the game were damn brutal. Malenia broke me mentally and physically.

Alright, second night in and how’s it going?

Defeated a number of minor bosses, have an improved bleed build and weapons (still a work in progress but getting better) and that means:

  • Margit is down. He had some decent moves but ultimately couldn’t handle my bleed build and haemorrhaged major health so he’s down in one.

  • Margit is down. He had some decent moves but ultimately couldn’t handle my bleed build and haemorrhaged major health so he’s down in one.
  • Took down my first dragon, Agheel. This one took two tries because I didn’t realize it had a one hit insta-kill lunge and bite attack. He chomped through my full health in one go during the first fight. I noticed it only started doing this once down to 10-15% health so the second time I attacked it’s legs close up to apply bleed and then stayed my distance and used arrows for the last 10% health. Enjoyable fight and now I have a dragon heart that I can use for incantations, however I’m not a caster lol

All-in-all a pretty decent start.

Two days in and I have to say From did it again, made a game I can’t stop thinking about when I’m not playing it. Even Kirby has taken a back seat right now. Sorry Kirbs, I’ll get back to you soon(ish).

This is the kind of open world I can dig. Some subtle signposts to indicated a general path, but nothing except stronger enemies to keep me from exploring wherever I want (and frankly, even enemies can't keep me and Torrent away).

Combat is highly enjoyable, and my proto-bleed build is already working nicely. I love seeing big chunks of health fall off enemies thanks to the bleed effect. It largely feels like Dark Souls, except that it feels considerably brighter.

And boy howdy people weren't joking when they said the game rains wolves from the sky. It really does!

Well folks, the verdict is in, I’ll be playing the PS4 version of Elden Ring on PS5. The lack of a smooth frame rate in the PS5 version makes the game nearly unplayable, so I’m going to live with longer loading times and slightly more pop-in with shorter draw distances as a trade-off for locked 60fps. The lack of a smooth frame rate in the PS5 version makes the game nearly unplayable, so I’m going to live with longer loading times and slightly more pop-in with shorter draw distances as a trade-off for locked 60fps. I really tried but it’s disappointingly choppy. Here’s hoping they patch the PS5 version so I can transfer my save and enjoy the higher quality looking game with the frame rate I want.

Welp, it finally happened, I found the area where fun goes to die...

Farum Azula is terrible and I hate it...The level design is confusing, enemies seem too strong (I'm a caster build in armor with 70 INT and 50 VIG and these things are brutal), and I just want it to be over.

The first bad area, shame...

Near 100hr playthrough finally comes to a close. Final boss slain, credits rolling & wow..one of the most incredible gaming experiences! Moving on to other games now but I'll be back for NG+ at some point.

But... reflecting on my playthrough, the most annoying part of the experience, is that the coolest and most interesting weapons, armor and spells/incantations, are found after 90 hours of playing.

I love From Software and their games. Elden Ring is truly special and memorable. I enjoyed most of it, but it outstayed its welcome. I hope their next game goes for less open world shenanigans and back to condensed, focused, game design.
