"A hybrid of Uncharted and Dark Souls" I read before venturing into this game, I love those series, and while this game won't reach any of the heights of those entries, it definitely does the right thing in mixing them. The set-pieces are entertaining, not as espectacular as those that happen to Nathan Drake, but Cal Kestis sure has his fun going on.

Combat isn't as demanding as Dark Souls but still if played in the hardest difficulty, it sometimes poses a challenge and it rewards as well with the feeling of overcoming it. The level design isn't as well crafted -and when used to it, intuitive- as that of From Software's games but it does its job right, leaving enough space for some platforming and free exploration; they feel organic in their world, changes from place to place are seen as natural which is a plus. Combat is great, the gauges of stamina are changed, divided into "Force" and "Block Stamina"; using the Force will drain -surprise!- the Force meter, that includes heavy attacks, dodging won't affect any meter... "Block Stamina" I guess is self-explanatory. Once you get used to micro-manage every one, this game delivers the Jedi experience, as you clear pathways full of clones, which I may add, have a deadly aim in this game.

The story isn't as well-achieved as those of the Uncharted series, but is serviceable. It has some very Star Wars moments, others that are incredibly cringy and -spoiler, I suppose- an amazing Darth Vader sequence, its best since Rogue One. They would have worked better in the dialogues and relationships of the Mantis -your ship-, it felt rushed and false... But hey! This is Star Wars!

Now to the bad. The game is incredibly good but there is one issue... One must bear in mind that this is a EA game, the ones that said "single-player games are dead" and the only decent game they have released in a while is single player. Now, I won't hate on EA -though is cool to do so, it seems- but they have released this game in a mess. It is incredibly buggy, it didn't crash on me, but it is so badly optimized -I played on PC-, that even if the FPS counter will give me 70+ -played on 1080p, Epic setting-, the stutters broke the experience. Surviving those seemingly out of nowhere, frame-drops, was more challenging than surviving a horde of clones. The game released in November, but they must have poorly tested as some of the issues I read are still present. Still, although it wasn't a masterpiece and I will probably won't play this game again; it has been a journey, fun and an actually enjoyable gaming experience, EA should take note of it.

Terrible performance, average everything but enjoyable nevertheless

Let's just talk about the worst parts first:

The performance of this PC port, regardless of hardware or settings, it's awful. It's a mess, you just can't get rid of the random stuttering no matter what. If you can't handle your games running like crap instead of the buttery smooth 60+ fps then stay away from this. Game's been out for a while now and they didn't fix the performance issues, at this point I doubt they ever will.

It is also a very, very unpolished game, innumerable small bugs and glitches, animation fails, geometry and collision are clunky as hell too. I think the fact that you can just fly around the map and break out of bounds by just spamming 2 buttons sums it all up.

Let's talk about the average parts then:

The core gameplay mechanics are fine, the combat is probably the best part of this game despite being rather simple with limited options regarding skills (the skill tree could've been a lot more interesting and deep, maybe a missed opportunity) or styles. It's still deeply satisfying to perform perfect dodges and parries or to completely destroy stormtroopers with force powers. Deflecting laser shots is just... epic. The, admittedly few, boss fights are also probably the highlights of the whole experience, specially the human bosses. These are certainly polished and the fights are both challenging and engaging, whenever I died to them I almost never thought it wasn't my fault or felt like they were cheesing me.

The checkpoint system and the combat was pretty forgiving compared to the Souls games it takes inspiration from but it could catch some players off guard if they aren't familiar with such games.

The platforming portions that seem to upset some people, felt okay to me. Fairly easy in general and just an okay addition to the traversal of the world. But I generally enjoy platforming in action games so... YMMV.

The story was just okay as well, I thought the main character being one of the few survivors of order 66 was an interesting premise and I liked it as a background setting for the game. Cal himself isn't the most fleshed out or interesting character ever but I thought he was fine. The main plot kinda makes sense for the most part and the motivations and goals for the characters are developed and explained enough. The problem is that there are so few of them and you barely interact with any, so they are there mostly for the cinematics but except for BD-1 it's basically like Cal is all alone. Seems like the structure of the game has a problem connecting the story to the gameplay. You go from planet to planet and Cal's partners just stay back with the ship until you're done exploring or performing whatever the story needs at that point, then just taxi you out of there and onto the next planet to do the same. They feel more like extras than real secondary characters that engage with the narrative and the action.

Graphics and audio are also just fine. The game looks beautiful at times but it can also be bland and muted. The starting planet is definitely a boring place and I think anywhere else would've been a much better way to introduce the player to the mechanics. I enjoyed it a lot more the 2nd time around. On the other hand, the very first intro sequence before you're free to explore was nicely done. The sound and the music are generally good, as one would expect of such a franchise.

TL;DR: Jedi Fallen Order is overall a decent adventure but it has severe downsides and the better parts don't reach the high points one could expect from such a IP. Nevertheless I liked it enough to find myself looking forward to a sequel that hopefully comes to us more polished and generally improving on the weak points of this title.

Overall a great action game that builds off of the style of Dark Souls and Sekiro, but lacks the punishment of such titles. Very cinematic moments that made the game at times feel just like a film. My only real complaint was the terrible technical side of the game. It had terrible load times and often assets such as characters could be missing in cutscenes. The framerate is horrible and if you switch it to performance mode it only helps a little. Some cutscenes would have freezing frames that would last for 2 or 3 seconds. Luckily nothing that extreme happened in combat or I would have given up on the game early on.

I noticed many scenes where they just did simple actions like having dinner or drinking a glass of water after Cal got back from a long trek which gave life to the characters. Trilla was probably one of the best villains that I've ever faced with well paced fights in the game. The graphics looked well done but it did lag a few times on my PS4 slim. The game had lots of bugs where enemies levitated above the platforms, or attacks don't properly show how they hit you but still overall it was not game breaking. The story fits right in the star wars universe and it would be what the game was remembered for. I would gladly give it 5 stars.

And while the story was entertaining and original, the final scene kinda killed the whole purpose of the game. Overrall it's an 'ok' game, with a fine set of characters and planets, but a very messy gameplay. BD-1 is my new favorite droid, though!

Jedi: Fallen Order is probably the best Star Wars thing made since Disney bought the IP but I'll never forgive it for making zombies canon.
