Traveling through a vast weirdly beautiful terrain, you must concoct potions, cast spells and lure the help of some very bizarre inhabitants to uncover the secrets that doom Kyrandia. Crafty Kyrandian veterans from the first Fables & Fiends adventure, The Legend of Kyrandia, may recognize their favorite land of giant frogs, talking trees and really strange berries. But this isn't just the same old Kyrandia! Challenging puzzles, new characters, and lots of self-conscious wisecracks from our heroine make Hand of Fate more challenging than it's predecessor. Less

I Will Always Love These Classic 90s Adventure Games
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Preliminary: Well I was skeptical at first cuz it really seemed especially focused on the quirky/"humorous" side of the first Kyrandia, but I read it improved the bad puzzles of the first game and I am grooving to the music and enjoying the QoL features, like Hurry as an option for walk speed haha and customizable Audio and straightforward UI/clicking/controls. Not inl ove with the extra comments and unnecessary "jokes" when I am trying to leave rooms etc.

Well I am definitely hooked. I couldn't put it down even though it was time for calm time/taking a break from gaming. The Look isn't particularly impressive for 1993, but I like it. The Sound is classic adventure game vibe. And it has lots of nice QoL, one I didn't mention earlier is also the mammoth size of the inventory. Biggest beef still is that I am tired of needing a comment after every click, every time I leave an area etc. At least it has QoL of skipping some of the unnecessary dialogue but I dunno, why is everybody commenting on everything haha. Such an adventure game trope, and maybe I'm just crabby tonight but yea, otherwise I am enjoying it. …

Day 1

I continue to enjoy this a lot, despite its flaws. And the talking is getting less noticable/frustrating and the overall Sound/vibe/Feel is clicking just right. It reminds me of a nice follow up to the Monkey Island 2 aesthetic and vibe. Some say it's too easy, but I don't believe in unwinnable situations, RNG-based deaths, and other petty things. I am nervous because I read there is an arcade segment at the end tho ugh

Some of the voice acting soudns soooo familiar. And I like this screen, tho I haven't been taking time to think to screenshot the other good ones enter image description here

Lol I'm on to the next "Area". And this is really growign on me. Something about the voices, the gameplay really reminds me of my Humongous Entertainment childhood favorites, the way the anchor destroyed the boat in the water and it slowly sunk was really good animation for the time but also reminded me of Pajama Sam the boat that talks, the tunes keep being good. I dunno, it's culminating into a nice adventure game, I really have been liking the early to mid 90s adventure game world, at elast as much as the platformers and action adventures and RPGs I knew I would enjoy from then.

Day 2

Part of me wants to give this a 5 star because I keep getting Monkey Island 2 and Humongous Entertainment vibes and the music keeps being solid. But also part of me doesn't want it to go above a 4 star because it is certainly inferior to Monkey Island 2 and because the zany joke-y parts/long animations despite an otherwise fast-paced adventure game are dragging it down.

More and more the puzzles are getting ridiculous and/or tedious like the first Kyrandia, tho it still is a marmed improvement in that regard. The areas/settings/Looks are getting better and better as the game goes though, so I am enjoying that. I'm surprised contemporary critics said this was too short and easy, it's quite lengthy to me and I don't even think I'm halfway yet!

The volcano (outside/"Beach" part, not the inside part) tune is a jam. And I like the dude just set up on a volcanic cliff, something so surreal and Humgongous Entertainment-y about that. Like there are always other people, no matter where you go in life, (and they're often gonna wanna trade or sell you something :-p in an adventure game).

Wow yea like I kept saying with the first one... another HE-vibe part: these trees must've influenced Pajama Sam 1 enter image description here

Finally! That potion-making segment in the Mystics House was long and tedious. And ugh great then we follow up with a Tower of Hanoi type puzzle. It has deteriorated back to the original game's lame puzzles compared to, say, Day of Tentacle.

The ending was mostly meh and focused on the quirky humor side of things, tho it was pretty cute reminiscing back to the screens throughout the game and a good background for the final bit of credits. enter image description hereenter image description hereenter image description here

Look: 8.5/10 Love this era's Look. Tho I suppose I expected a bit more growth from its predecessor

Sound: 9/10 Some real jams

Play: 8/10 In the end, it really was just standard adventure game fare, but it had me hooked for most the game. If only it had completely shaken off the tedious puzzles of its predecessor. Plus, at this point, the QoL features I liked and lack of annoying deaths etc are just standard.

Feel: 8.5/10 The Feel of Humongous Entertainment and Monkey Island 2 will always get me.

Attachment: 8/10 If it weren't for some of the later parts, this would for sure be a replay. But with those, I might as well replay Monkey Island 2 etc.

Overall: 8.4/10

Completion: Main Story

Playtime: ~2h 20m
