The game ran out of ideas 3 hours ago but it still going... Oof.
Wait.. during a big exposition dump the alien lady tells us all about The Custodian and whatever, but.. did she actually told us that

I've just noticed that the whole soulslike "enemies respawn if you activate pillars" is complete nonsense. This is a completely linear game, you never go back to previous areas, so there's absolutely no reason not to activate pillars as you encounter to get health and items back. This is yet another one of those games in which the mystery is really obvious but the characters have plot blindness so they don't realise it.
Also, this era of gaming will be remember by the way the main characters blurt out the solution to puzzles 1 second after presenting it.

I'm starting to like some aspects of this game. The combat quickly evolves with multiple effects modifiers that stack and the introduction of weak points on tough enemies. New abilities feel meaningful and can add to gameplay, like the one that adds an active reload element that reduces reload time, or the one that replenishes 25% of ammo when empty …

New abilities feel meaningful and can add to gameplay, like the one that adds an active reload element that reduces reload time, or the one that replenishes 25% of ammo when empty (although, it should replenish 25% whenever ammo is lower than 25%, since by then you're better off emptying your clips and let the ability kick in).
The whole respawning enemies is kind of bullshit, though, and I don't like it. As I said many times, all games should have quick save. I should be able to put down the game whenever I want and pick it up in the same exact spot.

Played a bit with UEVR and it feels great. Playing 3rd person games in VR is super immersive.
The game itself... so far it's fine, I guess. Nothing too revolutionary with a few annoying gameplay elements, like respawning enemies, poison.

In the end it wasn't terrible, but I don't think it's going to quite make my 2023 honourable mentions list. It has a lot of negative things holding it back from being great, things like poor character animations, limited enemy variation, dull environments, simplistic puzzles, and a lack of overall challenge, but the underlying game is mechanically solid and was …

It has a lot of negative things holding it back from being great, things like poor character animations, limited enemy variation, dull environments, simplistic puzzles, and a lack of overall challenge, but the underlying game is mechanically solid and was just worthwhile enough that I didn't feel like dropping it altogether. I think this dev team is capable of more, and Scars Above is potentially just a starting point. I'd like to see them incorporate some original ideas, and build upon a solid mechanical base to make something that is more than a simplified Metroidvania with Soulslike elements. I think they can do better, and I hope they get a chance.

I just got an achievement for solving all puzzles and I wish I was being hyperbolic about this, but I’m pretty sure there was a total of three puzzles in the entire game. I’m trying really hard to remember. One was a pillar with three symbols you had to manipulate. One was a rotating construct that I needed to freeze …

I think that was it.

Oh my god, stop telling me what to do. Did these devs go to the Horizon Forbidden West school of design?

Also, can we please just move past terrible mini puzzle games as a roadblock in games like this. No one picks up a Soulslike to play a really dumbed down version of The Witness. And if you are going to make puzzles, making them clumsy to manipulate is not the same thing as making them challenging. I can see the solution you want, but making the symbols hard to read and objects clunky to manipulate is not really particularly engaging. As for accessibility, I’m guessing it’s not a priority for these devs.

Runs surprisingly well on Steam Deck despite not being officially supported and given I’ve heard it can be pretty choppy on some gaming rigs.

First impression: take one part Returnal, but strip out the quick paced, fluid movement, satisfying combat and compelling boss fights, one part Dark Souls without the mechanical depth, and then throw in some low quality animations, stock Unreal aesthetics, and passable acting performances and you’ve got Scars Above. It not terrible for the price I paid, but it’s also not yet overflowing with originality, nor a lot of charm

We're almost through August, and this one's still the GOTY frontrunner for me. Don't sleep on this game - if you want a well-made, linear sci-fi action-adventure game that puts fun and spectacle over exhausting open worlds and overly complex game mechanics, consider checking it out!
