ATadMad's review of Witch Hunt

I can't recommend this game as it is. The graphics aren't great and the game play is tedious at best. It gets boring fast. The forest takes about 15 minutes to get around and it is beyond frustrating for the boss monsters to run away the second you do them any damage. I appreciate that reloading time is purposefully slow but man oh man, it makes you want to rip your hair out!

Survival horror/exploration/hunting game which was exceedingly enjoyable. The game is set in early Victorian times or something, and you're some nameless nobleman on a plight to rid this peculiar rural town of their infestation of evill. It's an open world: the town itself serves as a hub with NPCs, some story elements, merchant, healing and so on.

You venture out into the open world (a moderately-sized spooky forest) with the aim of hunting and killing a particular target/boss. As you wander the forest, you discover treasures, strange landmarks, bloody scenes, eerie woods, signs of witchcraft and so on. The place is infested with all manner of undead and wild dogs and other nasties. Once you've taken out your target, you move on to the next, bigger monster. In total there are 5 monsters/bosses to hunt, each of which becomes more challenging than the last.

The game mechanics are really interesting, unique and refined. You have three weapons: a flintlock pistol, a rifle (both single shot) and a sword. The guns take forever to reload, so you basically have two shots (one from each gun) then you've got to switch to the sword, unless you can somehow get some distance or …

The guns take forever to reload, so you basically have two shots (one from each gun) then you've got to switch to the sword, unless you can somehow get some distance or cover for purposes of reloading. Save slots are limited in a way: you can't save without collecting mana, which you get from killing nasties. You can trade in the treasures you've collected to buy upgrades to stamina and bullet capacity, giving a nice sense of progression. Each boss/monster/enemy works in a unique way, and one must learn their peculiarities and figure out a way to counter and defeat them. The whole thing works very well and it's a joy to play.

Some people might not enjoy the hunting aspect of the game. There's a fair bit of "puzzle solving" and also aimless wandering while you seek your prey. I loved this myself, I didn't mind the wilderness trails, soaking it all in. Others might find it a little too slow and frustrating.

The atmosphere of the game is fantastic. Exploring this spooky forest, windy hilltops.. the sounds of distant moans, growls of prowling beasts, the occasional bat or crow flies overhead. Things scurry through the undergrowth, you come across burnt out ruins, mutilated horses or abandoned shacks and the like. The game is mostly moonlit, with the occasional candle or camp fire. Throughout the game we see different weather effects, storms, fog, and an eerie darkness descends in the final chapter. The experience was reminiscent of Stalker: Call of Pripyat. I was totally immersed.

Despite being a one-man Unity asset-flip mess from a somewhat infamous dev, this is a truly inspired game, and it stands well apart from the standard budget horror trash. I think this dev has actually learned from his previous flops, listened to constructive criticism and has somehow created a fantastic, unique, spooky experience. Highly recommended.
