First, I don't think it's fair to call this a VR game. Unless, i just don't know what I'm doing its no more of a VR game than Dear Esther is, doesn't have VR controls, etc. That being said, it's a really nice experience with a headset. Voice-acted narration (Dear Esther) but there is no actually walking about. It's like a 3d rendered VN with 20 hidden collectibles in it.
Not bad, its' free, and takes about half an hour to hour tops.
This is free on GoG so it's hard to be too critical of the whole thing. The game itself gives you plenty of caveats before you even start playing the game. This is firmly a visual novel, but even by visual novel standards this feels very limited. You're basically stuck in place and can only look around and click on things. There isn't any fail state. There isn't any exploration. You're basically just clicking your way through the iconic short story Dagon.
The visuals, for what they are, are decently done. I did feel that some of the visuals didn't match the prose of Lovecraft. I found the reveal of the titular Dagon to be particularly disappointing, which is a real shame since it's kind of the whole "pay off" of the story. I also thought another mismatch was around the description of a Bas-relief of a giant monster killing a whale. The actual image just shows the monster just kind of vibing next to the whale... not looking like they are attacking each other at all...
It's a very faithful adaptation of the short story. No more. No less.
I was expecting a game.. I didn't get one, am I disappointed ? Hell no, might best way to experience lovecraft's stories there is.
What we got here is a modern (optional vr) ' visual picture book' of lovecraft's short story, you can look around, you see things move, and you can only make it advance (aside from few hidden spots with extra info). Narration is great, the mood is great, the graphics are great.. I only regret I don't have vr to experience it even better... that and that there's not more stories yet.
This is free on Steam and GOG:
