I was quite interested in this game, i used to play Warhammer and wondered what this would be like. Privateer probably thought this game would attract new players, i'm gonna go out on a hunch and say it did quite the opposite.
Interface
The main problem with the game can be seen in this screenshot:

Did you notice the tiny tiny menu at the bottom? Yeah, that controls everything. Normally microscopic menus are to blame on running old games at 4K, but this is at a normal 1080p resolution and the menu is the same size in both. You constantly have to squint to see what you're doing.
Controls
On top of this, the menu is incredibly clumsy. Whenever you move a unit it stays in the move menu. This seems to be to allow you to turn your unit, but you can select your facing while moving so it's superfluous. Now you don't want to have to click on the tiny tiny "back" button, you're going to use a hotkey. The hotkey you have to use every time you move a unit is, of course, Backspace. I quit the game when it gave me more than a handful of units, it's just too tedious. To give you an indication of how bad it is - the second battle has you controlling only 2 units. It took me over 23 minutes to complete.
Sound
Another bizarre thing is that all sound is disabled by default. Now i've run into a game where mouse speed was disabled by default, but all sound? It's just mindboggling. But, as it turned out, this is actually a feature - because the music is terrible. It's generic but super-dramatic music that gets on your nerves within minutes. So, kudos for muting that by default.
Story
Obviously, if you have a terrible interface, clumsy controls and awful music, you also need an atrocious story & dialogue and Privateer doesn't disappoint. The dialogue is something you would expect in a pre-teen cartoon. The story (?) is something involving a bunch of things that are never introduced. Who are the Khadors? Who are we? Why do the cities sound like something out of a second-rate young-adult novel?
Oh yeah, and it's buggy too. During the second mission my ally had to move and it took several minutes for no reason at all. And they want €20 for this, lmao.
