Each minigame represents a different activity in the meal preparation, such as mixing, frying, or chopping the provided ingredients. The minigame mechanics themselves range from quickly drawing parallel lines in order to chop items, to a rhythm game where ingredients are added to a skillet or the heat is adjusted at precisely the right time. In many cases, players must look at the top screen of the DS for guidance on what to do next and then perform the task on the bottom screen. If the player makes a serious blunder or time expires without sufficient progress being made, that step in the cooking process is considered a failure. When this happens, a graphic of an angry "Mama" with flames erupting from her eyes is displayed, along with the caption "Don't worry, Mama will fix it!". Read less

Okay so I know this game would have been a flash in a really shallow pan had it been released after iPhones proliferated, but it didn't so it was a DS classic. It's great for playing when truly, genuinely, all-consumingly bored, and that's not an insult! It occupies the mind in a way that is brainless and rote, but not so shameful as Bejeweled or any military-themed FPS. I think Cooking Mama's original popularity also benefitted from DS puzzle/brain games like Big Brain Academy or Picross, even though Cooking Mama makes us break down boiling an egg into a five step process. It also includes a special type of kawaii aesthetic that was specific to early third-party Nintendo DS games and should, in fact, be analyzed.
