It's the third deck builder I've played and by far the weakest example. It still has its own unique concept but it's not going to blow you away with it's innovations or novelty.

The aesthetic is a shiny throwback to point and click adventure puzzles, featuring that uncanny attempt at lifelike animation and graphics. It works well for what it's doing but the gameplay is not at its core all that fun compared to its competition and the story is not all that compelling for more than a moment. It greatly overstays its welcome as it stretches about 3 times longer than it needs to and well after it's still any fun. Finishing it becomes a chore.

A shorter, cheaper title would've been better. As it stands, I feel like I wasted both my time and money. Still, I don't want to be too harsh. It's clearly made with love and passion. It's by no means incomplete or janky. It could for the right person be a great experience. But it doesn't stand out beyond its subjective merits. It's just another rogue like. It's just another spooky indie game.

Inscryption is tough to talk about without giving away some of its fun secrets so I'd recommend being careful about how much you read prior to giving it a shot. Know that the core gameplay centers around a card battling game in the line of something like Hearthstone but with some very neat mechanics that are simple alone but combine to create some cool complex strategies. As you play you'll be able to build up a deck of cards both by gaining new ones and applying modifications to old ones. The right combo will let you pull off some game-breakingly strong things, which is part of the appeal, personally.

Now I'm not big into digital card games, but I found it very easy to create some really powerful combos. Maybe too easy, even. Early on the game can pose a bit of a challenge but as you progress the story it will only get easier and easier until, if you're like me, even the bosses stop being all that fun because you can steamroll them with little difficulty. And that's a shame because some of the bosses-- particularly the late game ones-- have some really unique tricks up their sleeves. Again, the core card game here is pretty solid. I just didn't find it all that well balanced in the context of the main story.

It's worth mentioning before moving on that I was very disappointed in the lack of proper controller support in the Steam release for this game. I had been looking forward to playing on my Steam Deck and maybe also using a controller at my desktop but the game has you moving a mouse with your joystick if you try to, which just kinda sucks. It plays just fine on the console releases so I can't imagine why it would be impossible to do the same on PC. Very odd decision there.

From here on I want to focus on the story and my thoughts on it. Pretty much anything can be a spoiler, so it's all gonna be tagged. There's a spoiler-free summary of my thoughts at the very end.

It doesn't take long for Inscryption to start doing the kind of fourth wall breaking stuff I'd expect (and greatly appreciate!) from this dev. The idea of a videogame where you're playing a card game while also trying to escape your opponent by solving puzzles inside of the room you're trapped in is fantastic and the early hours handle it very well. The cabin oozes atmosphere as you're slowly fed tidbits of info and hints towards the solutions for puzzles in the objects around you. And most of the rewards for those puzzles loop back into the card game, providing you with strong cards and also progress towards freedom. Brilliant stuff.

When you beat the final boss with the right preparation and the game reveals its second layer or "Act 2," it's initially exciting. It's like a whole other hidden game that plays by similar rules but expands on the mechanics you're familiar with. But I think the game would be a lot stronger if Act 2 were treated more as an optional postgame than just the middle block of a three part story.

For me Act 2 was a drag in spite of all the new toys it gives you to play with. The roguelite element is gone and you can retry battles as you please but this removes a lot of the spice from the game. Now you're expected to build your own deck by hand, which was kind of overwhelming for me with all the unfamiliar cards. Thankfully there's a button to autobuild a deck, which helped acclimate me some. The world of Act 2 lacks the personality of Act 1 and the mysterious escape room story gives way to some fairly generic RPG plot. Defeat the boss in each themed world and you win. It works as a fun nod to classic games like the Pokemon TCG on the Gameboy but that was the extent of my interest.

Unfortunately the third leg, Act 3, was the worst for me. It removes 3 of the 4 primary deck themes from Act 2 and returns to a visual style reminiscent of but not the same as Act 1. The main difference is now your game master is a soulless robot with little idea of what makes a game fun. There's the facade of an escape room again, sorta, but there's not really much to do and you might as well just play the card game laid out for you.

I can appreciate the meta commentary here on how essential the passion of a creator is to making a good game, but is this really a point that had to be made in quite this way? It's just not fun or particularly insightful. And the meta story at this point had devolved into some creepypasta stuff that it was hard to be all that interested in as well. I like a solid cursed videogame cartridge story, but this just didn't work for me. It felt like it strayed a bit far into ARG territory without casting a line to hook me.

So to wrap it up, for me Inscryption starts as a pretty fun little card game with an intriguing story but progressively degrades in quality as you push further in. I'd have appreciated it a lot more if the game ended around the 7-8 hour mark, but there's a good deal more past that that ends up bogging it down. It's worth checking out if you're a fan of card battlers but even then it's flawed and I don't think the story is enough to hold its own if you don't find the card game enticing by itself.

What a weird and wonderful game.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I'd say if you like digital card games and dark/weird tones, give this a try. It goes to some crazy places but also the gameplay is fun too for the majority of the experience.

Last week I went to my friend's place to play some games. The old-fashioned way: lot's of soda and just gaming on and on for a couple of days. We both had liked Balatro and had interest for deck-builders so we chose to play Inscryption this time. Inscryption is a deckbuilder/roguelike/escape room/horror game. As you can guess from such an incredible mish-mash of genres, it's pretty unique.

The main card game is quite simple. You place cards with health and attack on lanes where they defend and attack the opponents' cards on the opposing lanes. Of course, the cards get more intricate, boards have different layouts and bosses have unique mechanics to keep things different. If it was just for the card gameplay, I'd say Inscryption is just alright. There's nothing really amazing or addictive here. Just well functioning card game that is used as a vehicle for everything else.

What's that 'everything else' then? Well, Incsryption is a bizarre story-driven experience that goes places, to say the least. When you think you have seen what the game is about, the game pulls the rug under you and throws something crazy in your face. This relates to the story, the visual style and even the mechanics of the game. I won't go into detail to not spoil the surprises but if you are into creative and mind-bending games, you are in for a treat.

To super-summarise the story, Inscryption is a sort of 'found-footage' story. You know, like Blair Witch Project. Instead of film, the game's main character has found a game, Inscryption, and this game is a lot weirder than it seems initially.

Even though, the main card gameplay got a bit stale by the end and not all parts of the game are equally riveting (for us it was act 2), I can't help but be impressed by Inscryption. The creativity put into this game is just overflowing. I think my friend would also echo the sentiment. This game is one to remember.

Wow

I didn't think I was going to push past the early game, but once it clicked, the rest of the game went down so smooth I almost enjoyed the FMV portions. I thought I was getting one thing and got so much more.

This is one of those games where I went in expecting one thing, and turned out to get something else entirely. I've played Pony Island before and heard this would be similar, so I was expecting the creepy aesthetic, surreal vibes, and fourth-wall-breaking moments. All of that was perfectly fine, albeit not very surprising or new. But where this game really shines is in the cards - they've invented a really good card game here.

The first act of the story introduces the card game mechanics, and it's definitely enjoyable, but the second act is where it really opens up and starts to get interesting. I'll keep things spoiler-light here, but in the second act you get to explore a much larger area while collecting cards and building your own custom deck. Loads of new mechanics and card archetypes are added, and my only complaint is that it didn't last long enough. Oddly enough this reminded me a lot of the old Pokemon TCG game on the gameboy color, just wandering around playing cards and building decks, and it was a ton of fun.

After finishing the game, you unlock a repeatable roguelike-mode where you're playing a tweaked version of Act I over again. It's fun to an extent, but I found myself really missing all the things that got added in the second act, so it didn't have quite the replayability I was hoping for. Either way, that's all just extra and doesn't detract from the core story playthrough of the game, which I really thoroughly enjoyed. I'd give this one a big thumbs-up and recommendation, even if you're a bit tired of the surrealism/fourth-wall-breaking concept. At the end of the day, it's just a damn fun card game.

So to avoid spoilers, I'll just say it was a truly novel experience. I have never played anything like Inscryption. I've played a lot of games that are somewhat like Inscryption. It dips in and out of game mechanics and genres in a way that feels almost disjointed but actually requires great expertise in its execution. The most consistent feeling I had while playing Inscryption was surprise, a reaction pretty hard to come by in modern gaming with its extremely iterative, crafted genres. The thing I enjoy absolutely most about video games is the gradual mastering of an intricate, elegant system of mechanics. Inscryption keeps up that focus, the kind that usually dominates the early portions of a game, almost all the way through. I really can't say much about this game. It didn't quite hit the high point of instant masterpiece that I thought it might reach in the early game. But it was fun, striking, and over all, extremely memorable. It's not a game I'm likely to forget.

La intro es buenísima y la primera iteración me gustó. Aunque acaba siendo pesado creo que vale la pena probarlo y es un juego que merece reconocimientos.

El dlc es absurdamente difícil, pero quien quiera dar cabezazos es muy chulo.

I tried this game out thanks to a glowing recommendation from a good gaming friend and I was not disappointed. Inscryption now lives in the so-called pantheon of my most beloved games. There are games within this game, layers of storytelling, and a staggering amount of character. I've never really played card games in any real sense so I thought there would be a learning curve with Inscryption but fortunately, that's not the case. The 'tutorial' of the game doesn't feel like a tutorial because it's part of the story and the mechanics are simple. The rogueish elements are a delight and make it exceptionally replayable. I like this game so much that I bought it for both my Switch and MacBook after beating it on PS5. I went on vacation to Las Vegas a day after that and spent just about all my hotel time playing the Switch version. As I write this, I'm working on completing Kaycee's Mod.

The story (or stories) and narrative/narratives are interesting from the start. There were multiple instances in which I reacted out loud to what unfolded. It's got some very cool twists throughout and keeps the player on their toes. The whole gaming meta-narrative within Act 3 is brilliant.

The only complaint I have about this game is that it isn't longer or that there isn't a sequel in development.

The strategy was really fun once you recognized how to build a deck. However I'll say it wasn't the hardest game to win once you got a pretty "OP" card.

As well, the story sort of fell apart for me near the end becoming much to vague and crammed in at the end. The scope become a world wide thing, I wanted something more intimate maybe. Sort of reminded me of Undertale in that way.

Overall I immensely enjoyed. Really glad it got ported over to the Switch.

I also really liked he visual style of this game, it was almost like a grainy/retro effect that wasn't too far off From Return of Obra-Dinn.

At it's heart it's a highly imaginative deckbuilding Cardgame with some unusual mechanics (was reccomended to me by someone who loves Slay The Spire)

Also on the ending: At first I thought it wasn't so great and was a strange way to end the game. But after reading reddit and just thinking a bit about it more makes me appreciate the ending more due to it's depth. First of all it's not quite clear who the assassin is or why a game company would go to such lengths to retrieve this or cover it up but the implication is the Polybius myth. The idea of playing a game that was finalized by the AI and uploaded to steam in it's current form is pretty amusing. While it seems like a bit of an arc that is disconnected from the rest of the in-game story. Think about the four main 'deities' and why the opposed P30 and his pursuit of a singularity? They often warn that he's gone too far and will throw things out of balance. And at one point in the game the game wants to use your connection to go online and look up pictures and things for cards... It's clear it's learning but since you are just playing a game, you don't really think much of it at the time... More to it than I realized and maybe too subtle or lightly executed, but still pretty cool

The game kind of started to drag for me around the 3/4 mark. The spoopy "this game isn't what it seems" aspect had fully set in; the card game was getting more & more monotonous; and I just wanted everything to play out. And once it did, it was satisfying enough.

A solid three stars.
