Don't Revist Mediocre Games From Childhood

I picked up Fire Warrior on a whim from GOG. I remembered the game fondly from when it first came out. I knew, even then, that it wasn't a great game, but I remember thinking it was fun and really enjoying the 40k ambience.

After beating a series of RPGs I thought a nice mindless FPS might be the perfect palette cleanser.

Well.... I guess it left me appreciating good games more, because this game is awful.

The controls are some of the worst I have experienced, with it being almost impossible to tell if bullets are actually connecting, and frequently they miss enemies literally right in front of you. In comparison, enemy shots are super accurate. This leads to numerous show downs where I died because my bullets literally passed through, rather then hit enemies, mean while every enemy shot hit me!

The enemies are ridiculously mundane, soldier in stupid blue fatigues, same exact soldier in red fatigues for a boss, and another color for middle enemy. Once Space Marines get added in it gets a little better, but then rapidly grows boring again.

The settings have a decent amount of variety, but unfortunately the game is SO bad …

After struggling for about 7 hours I realized it was time to let this game rest easy in my memories, and hopefully I can remember some of the experiences fondly, while I hopefully forget this most recent experience.

People told me this game was bad, but damn... buggy, clunky and extremely hard for no reason. Couldn't finish it due to a bug on the last level, where the story just stood still. It's a shame, 'cause the story carries the Warhammer vibes well. Atmosphere is also top notch. But all the rest is just... this shit is a mess. Stay away from it. Wasted potential!

Continuing to work through this game. It looks like a worse version of the original Doom, which is particularly bad because it's 10 years older.

The controls have cost me a few deaths, the really bad accuracy of every gun some more, and the terrible resolution still more. That said I am past the half way point so screw it im beating this PoS

I played this when it came out, as a tween who loved the 40k lore I was really pumped to see it translated to the game. At the time I vaguely remember it being rough, but fun.

Replaying it now in 2021, man.... whew.... this game is.... lol

There is the bones of a solid game here. I like the variation, even early on, in weapons, and the atmosphere is solid.

But some core gameplay mechanics are not good. Its really tough to tell if rapid fire weapons are actually hitting enemies, the sniper rifle is inaccurate AF, and the enemies, especially in the beginning, are the same two things with different color uniforms, over and over.

I still plan to play through the whole game, because I am having a decent enough time due to a combo of nostalgia and liking the setting, but whew... its rough lol
