Worth It for the Side Stories Alone
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

You haven't played the first Fata Morgana? Stop! Hold on! Don't play this. Get out of here! Okay, are they gone? It's just us now, those who played the first game? Whew. Well, you'll certainly enjoy this game if you enjoyed the first. The main story is kind of unnecessary, but I understand why the developers indulged in this prequel. It's certainly interesting, but I got the most out of the three side stories. They are much shorter than the main game, but all three are excellent. Here's to more games with messy characters! Consider picking up the Dreams of the Revenant edition on consoles if you haven't played the series at all.

EDIT: I just found the final section of the story. I take back anything negative I said! UGH. 5 out of 5.

tulips's review of The House in Fata Morgana: A Requiem for Innocence

This is a backstory to the events of The House in Fata Morgana which are told there but as a wall of text. Here that "wall of text" is the main dish with more details. First game was more twisted and mysterious whereas this one is more straightforward. You get some new characters, so while you know how it’s all going to end, you still get some new twists, and ofc you understand more of the old cast. It’s good, tragic yessss, in moments it was a little bit annoying cause you are reading the same story but I’d say its worth it. It’s a different perspective, with the story you already know but even parts with just a few new sentences hit hard so that makes it worth it.

Sequels, prequels, fanfiction, side stories, lore explanations, expansions... After an amazing experience, people often get hungry for those sort of things, including me sometimes for sure (well... besides fanfiction... no judgment, though). Often, though, I just already feel like I've got all I could possibly want out of a loved piece of media.

The House in Fata Morgana more or less fits into the latter category. It's a massive-feeling, emotionally draining game that sits among my favorites, but that I'll probably never replay in full again. And it's a super "complete" experience that really didn't need anything added to it. Still, this shorter side game has a generally great reception among fans of the original, so I had to pick it up.

It mostly consists of a main story that straight-up retells part of the original game in significantly greater detail. I've just played a fair bit of it, and, yeah... I just don't feel like I need to see the rest. It feels like a bit of a drag, even, and brings uncomfortable extra detail to some of the more disturbing stuff from the original game. Plus it's focused on a multifaceted but ultimately reprehensible character, who was a …

I just don't feel like I need to see the rest. It feels like a bit of a drag, even, and brings uncomfortable extra detail to some of the more disturbing stuff from the original game. Plus it's focused on a multifaceted but ultimately reprehensible character, who was a very interesting part of the original's tragic tapestry, but whose twisted story I'm not really excited to hear more about as a standalone that retreads a ton of old ground.

Still need to check out the extra side stories here, since they're shorter and focus on other stuff, but overall, I'm thinking maybe I'm just satisfied sticking with the original on this one. That game's already like a prequel, sequel, and interquel to its own story... lol

edit: I did one of the other separate side stories today, much shorter and more enjoyable - sort of like an epilogue to the original game. Still not needed, but it was a nice little time.
